Spring is here, it is hard to believe it is already our third and final trimester of the year! This is a busy time at Roosevelt School. The PTA
Talent Show was a success and so were our Spring Sings. There are
also many exciting events planned for the end of the school year; such
as fieldtrips, Kindergarten Open House, Science Fair (1st, 4th, & 5th), and
the 4th & 5th Grade Track Meet. There is a PTA Flapjack Fundraiser on
May 16th from 8am-10am to raise money for our school sign. Please
don’t forget Summer School begins June 15th – July 10th. We have a
great deal to look forward to!
In addition to the many events at Roosevelt, we continue to focus on assessment and instruction. We have several assessments that we use to
help measure student learning. The results from these assessments
give us valuable data on student growth. These assessments also provide information on areas we can identify as enrichment opportunities for
our students. Our kindergarten, first and second grade students will be
taking the PALS (Phonemic Awareness Literacy Skills). Our third
through fifth grade students will be taking the Wisconsin State Badger
Exam. We are very proud of our Roosevelt staff and students and continue to celebrate our successes.
I would also like to thank parents for attending parent/teacher conferences in March and to those who completed the parent survey. We appreciate your feedback. This was a wonderful opportunity to share information between families and teachers. We had 100% parent participation with all parents/guardians attending in person or via phone. We appreciate your support in continuing to build a strong partnership between
home and school. We are always looking for ways to encourage family
involvement. I invite you to attend any/all Roosevelt events this

Beginner band students at Roosevelt School
Dear Band Parents/Guardian:
Spring is a busy time at school and in the music department. This is often the time of the year when school
becomes a bit “routine.” Many students find themselves in a bind and begin to seek ways to shed the burden of “over-commitment.” Unfortunately, music may be a target of this quick-fix solution.
Beware of the shallow contention, “But I just don’t have the time to continue with music when there is so much to do.” Initially this statement seems to have some merit, but when parents clearly understand that music stimulates the creative mind and unleashes multidimensional thinking that reinforces the highest level of intellect, memory and sensory awareness, the argument is short-lived. The question to ask is, “Do you want children to master the disciplines required to achieve life-goals?” The obvious “yes” answer supports a continuation of music study.
Over the years, music educators have carefully tracked the SAT test scores of students involved in music classes compared to those
who were not. The statistics highlight a dramatic variance that cannot be ignored: “Students with coursework/experience in music performance scored 52 points higher on the verbal portion of the SAT and 37 points higher on the math portion than students with no
coursework or experience in the arts. And a difference in scores increased with the number of years involved. Those who studied music
four or more years scored a combined 101 points higher on the SAT than students with no experience in the arts.” Profiles of SAT and

In the weeks ahead, band students will be putting the finishing touches on preparations for their spring concert. These weeks can provide an opportunity for students to be the performer and the listener, allowing a new level of understanding and appreciation.
Our upcoming concert is the culminating activity of this year of instrument study. Please join us on Wednesday, May 27, at approximately 2:00pm in the gym. More information will be sent home later this spring. Your presence at this event will mean much to your student
musician.

MUSIC NOTES FROM MRS. RILEY & MRS. VRIEZEN
Congratulations to all Roosevelt students for a terrific job on our Roosevelt Spring
Shows! What a great way to celebrate MIOSM – (Music in our Schools
Month)! We are so very proud of your hard work, enthusiasm, and growth in
music skills this year.
Thank you to all parents, grandparents and friends who were able to attend these
performances and show support for music education.
The reflection papers that the students wrote about their performance really
demonstrated their pride, joy and sense of accomplishment from this event.
All students will continue to study the musical elements of Rhythm, Melody, Harmony/Texture, Form, and Timbre for the remainder of the year. Our list of
music terms and symbols continue to grow every week. By the end of the year,
it will be amazing how many musical terms can be added to their vocabulary
list.
Students will be bringing home their Music Portfolio at the end of the year with
their Music CBA’s, other assessments and reflection writings from their Spring
Sings.
Everyone had fun celebrating “MIOSM” – Music In Our Schools Month dur ing
March. This year’s theme from the National Association for Music Education
was “Music Makes Me ……………!” It was so fun to hear the many ways the
students filled in the blank. It is safe to say, music is important in the lives
of our Roosevelt students.

SPRING SINGS 2015
Too Sick For School?
One of the problems most often confronting parents of school-age children occurs when a child
complains of not feeling well on a school day. A decision must be made as to whether the child stays
home or goes to school. How do you make the right decision? The following guidelines are provided
to assist you in making the decision as to when your child should stay home from school:
Fever: A child with a temperature of 100 or over should not go to school and should be kept home until fever free for 24
hours without taking medication to control a fever.
Diarrhea, vomiting: A child with diarrhea needs to stay home from school. A child who is vomiting needs to stay home
from school. In both instances your child can return to school if they have not had diarrhea or vomiting in the last 12
hours and they have the energy or feel well enough to attend school.
Cold, cough, sore throat: A child with a bad cough or bad cold symptoms should stay home even though there may
not be a fever associated with the illness.

Medication Reminder
Please make every effort to give medications at home. If medications must be taken at school, the following conditions must be met:

Prescription Medications—A parent permission form and a physician permission form must be completed and
kept on file at school.
 Over-the-counter Medications—A parent permission form must be completed and kept on file at school.
The school office must be notified immediately of students with a food or bee sting allergy or any life threatening
condition, so arrangements can be made to provide proper care to the student if needed.
Breakfast Club is FREE for all Roosevelt Students
Breakfast is offered in the cafeteria daily from 7:45—8:05am.
Please enter through door #8. The Breakfast Club is supervised
by Roosevelt staff members but we are always looking for additional adult help during breakfast hours. If you are interested in
helping please contact the office at 743-7000.
NO DOGS ALLOWED
City ordinance forbids dogs, cats and other animals from being on playgrounds
or school grounds at any time. Thank you!
Orchestra
Dear Parents and Students:
It is great to announce that our Orchestra students continue to make progress and a
steady growth in their learning. We continue to keep track of our practice time and most
students have filled their class practice charts. We look forward to our year end ceremony and celebration for all the hard work the orchestra students have done this year. We
should be very proud of their success.

Book Drive
In February, the Family Resource Center had their Book Drive Kick-Off and will continue to collect
gently used books for Roosevelt students through the month of May!
If you have children’s books that you no longer need, please consider donating them to our students and school. Last year’s book drive brought in enough books to give away over 400 books to
our students here at Roosevelt. With your help we hope to do it again.
Gently used books for all ages will be collected. (board books, picture books, early readers, chapter
books, novels, etc.) Please bring books into the school office and place them into the FRC bin.

On February 22nd, our Chinese students took part in the annual Chinese
New Year Celebration held at Hedberg Library. The participation of the
students was in the form of a set of artistic decorations that greatly added
to the ambience of the event. Many students went to the event, and two
of our students, Carly Stengel and Madelyn Viles volunteered in this
event. They also made a poster telling the culture information about Chinese New Year. I received a lot of positive feedback from many of those
attending the celebration, and really want to thank the students for their
hard work and dedication to their Chinese studies!

Variety Show
On Thursday Feb. 26th the PTA sponsored the Variety Show at Edison Middle School. This event was well attended and featured many
talented students from Roosevelt. The students worked very hard at
their performances and produced a great show!

Request for School Transfer/Placement (Intra District Transfers) within the School District of Janesville Attendance Areas
Due to Move:
If you move within the School District of Janesville during the school year and wish to remain at your current school please ask the school office for a Request to Remain in Current
School Following Move to New Attendance Area Form (Blue). Complete the form and return it to the school office.
Due to Parent Choice:
If you wish to apply to have your student transferred/placed in another school within the district next school year (2015-2016), please ask the school office for a School Transfer/
Placement Within the School District Form (Goldenrod). Completed forms will be accepted from December 1 through December 15, 2014 only. Submit your Request for School
Transfer/Placement Within the School District Form (Goldenrod) to your home school attendance area office. Parents applying for Requests for School Transfer/Placement Within
the School District will be notified of approval or disapproval by January 15, 2015. Parents applying for Requests for School Transfer/Placement Within the School District for incoming Kindergarten students will be notified of approval or disapproval after they have enrolled their child during the Kindergarten Enrollment period with the New Student Enrollment Office. If you have questions, please contact the school office of your home school attendance area.
Open Enrollment – Public School Choice – District to District Transfers
If during the school year, you move outside the School District of Janesville and you wish to remain at your current school please contact the Administrative Services office at 7435006 and request a tuition waiver form within two weeks of your move. This will allow you to be eligible to attend your current school for the remainder of the current year tuition
free. If your move occurs prior to February, you will also need to complete an open enrollment application. Application instructions are provided to the School District of Janesville
by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and should be available by mid January 2014. This year applications will be accepted February 2 – April 30, 2015.

Child Find Notice
“The school district must locate, identify and evaluate all resident children with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending
private schools, regardless of the severity of their disabilities.” The school district has a special education program to locate and screen all
children with suspected disabilities who are residents of the district and who have not graduated from high school. Upon request the
school district will screen any resident child who has not graduated high school to determine whether a special education referral is appropriate. A request may be made by contacting Barbara Kelley, Supervisor of Special Education Services for the School District of Janesville at
743-5061, or by writing her at 527 S. Franklin St., Janesville WI 53548.
Annually the district conducts developmental screening of preschool children. Each child’s motor, communication and social skills are
observed at various play areas. Each child is weighed and measured, and the child’s hearing and vision is checked. The information is used
to provide the parent with a profile of their child’s current development and to provide suggestions for follow up activities. Parents learn
about community services available to them and speak with representatives of agencies serving families. The information from screening is
also used to determine whether a child should be evaluated for a suspected disability. When school staff reasonably believe a child is a
child with a disability, they refer the child for evaluation by a school district Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Developmental
screening will be a part of the kindergarten screening this Spring. Watch for dates at your local school.
A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her
for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to report the child to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring
the child, the person making the referral must inform the child’s parents that the referral will be made. The referral must be in writing and
include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. Others who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability may also refer the child to the school district in which the child resides. A referral of a child residing in the School District of Janesville
may be sent to Barbara Kelley at the school district address above.”
