A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Holy Apostles Parish Family,
Last week I got a letter from St. Paul Episcopal Church in McHenry saying that they are
praying for our parish and will pray for another
parish each of the next 20 weeks. I was very
touched by this; so we will do the same.
One of my goals is to work more with other
parishes in town. One way we are doing this
is by bringing a mobile pack for Feed Our
Starving Children at Zion Lutheran Church on
November 20 and 21. It would be great to
have a greater spirit of ecumenism here.
Our trip to Los Angeles to advance our
strategic plan to further engage our young
adults showed us we are on track with a great
start for Family Faith Formation. Our next
main goal is making our parish more friendly
and accessible for parents with babies and
toddlers who make noise. More to come on
that subject.
Have a Blessed Week!
Father Paul

Holy Apostles Mission Day—October 17
McHenry’s first responders (police, firefighters and
EMT’s) were thanked for their service at the 10 AM
Children’s Mass last Sunday. They received a blessing
and a lengthy standing ovation from the congregation.
The blessing and prayers were especially meaningful
this year because of our community’s recent loss of two
police officers in the line of duty.
Many of us would love to reach out and be the face of
God by serving others in need but are unable to take a
mission trip to do so. Mission Day is an opportunity for
everyone to serve people in our community just for a day.
Set aside Saturday, October 17, to work on a team of
parish members to give a hand to someone who needs assistance maintaining
their homes. Register online on the parish website or pick up a form in the narthex.
Are you or do you know someone in our
community (need not be parish members) who needs help at their home with
cleaning, yard work/landscaping, painting, or light electrical, plumbing or construction repairs?
Let us add your needs to our “to do” list on Mission Day.
(We cannot guarantee that all requests for help will be
met.) Contact Joe Filpi at 815-385-5673 or jfilpi@the
churchofholyapostles.org with your requests for help.
Junior High Fun Night This Friday
If you’re in 6th, 7th or 8th grade, we’ve got a night of fun
just for you! It’s this Friday, October 16, 7 to 9 PM, in
Sherry Center/Apostles Bay. Grab your friends and come
for fun! Contact Joe Filpi at 815-385-5673, x212 or
[email protected] for more information.
Jesus’ Greatest Expression of Love...
...is the Divine Eucharist. Take a little time each week to
visit Jesus in the Divine Eucharist in the All Saints Perpetual Adoration Chapel. and thank Him and be refreshed. Pray,
listen, and feel the peace that He gives us so lovingly.
Take a break from your busy life to acknowledge His comforting love. Jesus will bless you, your family, and the
whole world for this hour of faith you spend with Him in the
Blessed Sacrament. Please pray about committing to one
of these open times:
Monday: 1 to 2 AM; 10 to 11 AM Tuesday: 4 to 5 PM
Wednesday: 2 to 3 PM
Friday: 1 to 2 PM; 7 to 8 PM Saturday: 12 to 1 AM
Last Sunday was
the feast of St.
Francis of Assisi,
patron saint of
animals and the
day Holy Apostles’
Blessing of
Animals is held.
Deacon Craig

braved the chilly
wind that day and

Adorers Meeting: Everyone is highly encouraged to attend
a meeting of current, past, visiting and interested Adorers
at our All Saints Adoration Chapel on Tuesday, October
20, at 7 PM in Sherry Center. Questions? Contact Mike
Thielsen at 815-385-8562 or [email protected].
Offer Your Intentions with Candles

for 14 days. Request your own personal intentions for
their duration by contacting the Parish Office. The suggested
donation is $15 per candle. From October 11 to 24, with

We Share Our Blessings
Pastoral Care Support Groups
This week, our Parish Tithe will be given to Pioneer
Center for Human Services of McHenry County.
Do you have someone you love who is suffering from
some stage of dementia? There are many types of dementia, but it generally involves problems with thinking
or memory. The purpose of this meeting will be to talk
with one another and share stories about your loved
one with dementia. We all can learn from one another.
All are welcome: family members, the person with dementia, the caregiver, friends and anyone who wants to
know more about this condition. Our first meeting will be
Wednesday, October 14, (please note this corrected
date) 1 to 2:30 PM, in St. Ambrose room in Apostles
Bay, facilitated by Don Gaul, whose wife has dementia.
Too many of us have been confronted with the tragedy
of suicide. You may have experienced severe depression to the point of ending your life, or you have a loved
one who has watched a family member or friend suffer
from depression, ending in either an attempted or the
finality of suicide. Or you did not even know that your
loved one was suffering in silence until it was too late to
help. All are welcome to come, to share, and try to understand a little bit more about suicide. Our first meeting
will be November 4, at 7 PM in St. Ambrose/St. Catherine rooms. Geri Condon, who has experience with
suicide both personally and professionally as a licensed
professional counselor will be our facilitator.
For more information on either of the above groups,
contact Jeanne Fraser at 815-385-5673, ext. 224 or
[email protected].
Your Gifts Help Provide a Safe Place
It takes strength and courage to leave an abusive situation that isn't healthy or safe. But it
also takes having somewhere else
to go. Recently, a middle-aged
woman asked the St. Vincent de
Paul Society for help as she and
her son waited to be admitted to
Turning Point. This woman knew
she couldn't stay where she was, but needed a safe
place to stay for several nights. Thanks to your generosity,
SVdPS was able to pay for two nights in a local hotel,
providing the safety and security this family so desperately needed. This is my commandment, that you love
one another as I have loved you. John 15:12

hogar y de familia”. Poco tiempo para vivir lo que se ha logrado;
tantos medios sofisticados de diversión, pero cada vez más un
profundo vacío en el corazón; muchos placeres, pero poco amor;

Knights Ask for Support of “Holiday Meals”
“Mystery & Mayhem in the Wild West”
Knights of Columbus Council 1288 of McHenry will again
be raising funds to provide holiday meals to those in
need in our community. This will be the 9th year the
Knights will undertake this rewarding and appreciated
project. Their mission is simple: they
raise money to purchase food and,
through a partnership with Meijer
Stores, they are able to stretch the
money that is donated a long way.
The food is packed in such a way that
each family receives everything they
need to prepare a proper holiday
meal. One hundred percent of the
funds donated is used purchase food
that benefits needy families in our own McHenry area.
Any amount you can give, no matter how small, is greatly
appreciated. The distribution of the Thanksgiving meals
will be on Saturday, November 21 and the Knights
welcome everyone to help sort and pack the meals. Please
mail your donations to Knights of Columbus Council
1288, P. O. Box 148, McHenry IL 60051. Your past support
is greatly appreciated—we hope we can count on it again!
Holy Apostles Marriage Ministry will present a firstever Murder Mystery Night “Murder at the Deadwood
Saloon” on Saturday, October 17, 7 to 11 PM. This
exciting event is open to all parish members 21 years
old and over and offers
a great deal of interaction with the audience
as everyone works to
solve the mystery.
Admission is $5.00 and
an appetizer or snack to
share. A cash bar will be
offered and costumes
are encouraged (reward for best costume!) It’s Deadwood Saloon’s first Deadwood Poker Tournament Party
and it’s prize money has attracted a vast array of visitors and residents alike. Like Anna Belle, Gambling
Jack’s wife, said to be the reason he always wins. Find
out why at this first-ever Murder Mystery at Holy Apostles!
Helping Hands Are Needed
We are all so busy that we sometimes feel we have no
time to participate in any ministries at Holy Apostles, but
here we offer the opportunity of a valuable yet not timeconsuming ministry: be a “helping hand.” We have many
people in the parish who are at various times in need of
help. A nice home-cooked meal, a cake or cookies, a ride
to church or to the store would be so appreciated by
them. Would you be willing to volunteer to help on an asneeded basis for the homebound or for special events at
church? Contact Jeanne Fraser, Pastoral Care, 815-3855673, x 224, or [email protected].

Please Let Us Know Where You Are
If you are homebound, in the hospital, in a nursing home
or a rehab unit, please let us know. We try to keep track
of everyone as they move from one location to another
but sometimes we lose contact. If you have not heard
from someone at Holy Apostles in a while, it may be because we don’t know were you are. There are people who
can come visit you, bring you Communion or bring you
meals. If you would like contact from your parish, call
Jeanne Fraser, 815-385-5673, ext. 224 or
[email protected].

invite you to attend and remember your loved one.

Prayerfully Consider a Cursillo Weekend
A Cursillo (pronounced kur-see-yo) weekend begins on
Thursday night and ends on Sunday evening. Candidates
attending live and work together listening to talks given
by religious and lay people to gain a deeper awareness
of their faith. The goal of the Cursillo weekend is to form
small Christian communities or groups that meet weekly
to help us with being accountable in our faith lives and
to help to accomplish the mission of the Church. It is a
blend of seriousness, light heartedness, spiritual exercises, talks and discussions and is presented in an atmosphere of joy and song. The Cursillo movement helps
ordinary people grow in love and service of God and man
for the rest of their lives by providing a framework for it,
