Give thanks to him, bless his name. (Psalm 100:4) Parish Office 714-826-0760 Business Administration Steve Germain, Business Manager Tony Kulassia, Office Manager Sherri Nelson, Admin. Secretary Margie Mendez, Secretary Lisa Giacomi, Bulletin This coming Thursday is Thanksgiving Day and we are encouraged to pause and give thanks to God. In his Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1863, President Abraham Lincoln wrote: “The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and Adult Formation healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed Rebecca Soto, Director that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they Ministerio Hispano can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually Sr. Maria Teresa Salceda, Director Humberto Arreola, Coro Hispano insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.” In 1863, the United States was in the Civil War, a terribly brutal and emotional experience. Thousands of young Americans had died, while others faced the prospect of certain death. Yet, in the midst of such a challenging time, President Lincoln called upon Americans to remember the richness of God’s blessings and to be thankful. So it should be with us. In many ways, 2015 has not been an easy year for our nation. We continue to struggle with economic hardships. Bad weather and natural disasters have affected parts of our country. Wars continue to take men and women away from their homes, and some of these brave soldiers will never return. Political tensions throughout the world bring the threat of further violence and death. However, in spite of our challenges and setbacks, we have been richly blessed by God. Thanksgiving is due just as much today as it was in 1863, perhaps much more. When we give thanks, we bring to mind God’s gifts to us. This, in turn, reminds us of God’s gracious nature. We think, not just of what God has done, but also of who God is. In the language of Psalm 100, we enter God’s gates with thanksgiving, so that we might go into His courts with praise. For many of us, thanksgiving for what God has done leads us to praise God for who He is. On this Sunday before Thanksgiving, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King and remember the great gift of salvation we have received in Jesus Christ. Another reason to give thanks for immeasurable goodness of God. May you enter God’s gates with thanksgiving today, so that you might celebrate in his courts with praise and may God give you and your family a rich and blessed Thanksgiving Day! If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants (would) be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here." (John 18:36) Why? I have been asking this question a lot these days. This morning, I am back in Idaho. I am preparing for the funeral of a very good friend. She succumbed to cancer five days ago. She suffered much through the years that we've known her. A severely handicapped child, his death, marital issues, job issues, health issues; name it, she has experienced it. “Why?” is the question her surviving children ask. It is a question that many ask. The tragic news from France. A seemingly senseless massacre. How much more can the world take? “Why, why Lord, do you let these terrible things happen” is the question that we keep hearing. I met the “answer” to the question “why” for my friend, Gerry, in the parish office last week. It was a chance encounter. I had never met her before. She radiated joy. The smile was from ear to ear and I could not pass by without introducing myself. I was hooked! I caught her on the way out the door. She had just visited one of our priests. I learned that she had also just buried a second child ten days earlier. She was now on her way home to care for her husband with dementia. Like Gerry, she teaches unconditional love with her life. Like Gerry, she teaches patient endurance with an effervescent love for our Lord and an infectious hope for eternal life in His kingdom yet to come. Thank you! As for Paris, I don't think there will ever be sufficient answers. My daughter did give me a helpful quote attributed to Mr. Rogers, a childhood TV personality: “In times of tragedy, look for the helpers. They are always present.” I am so blessed to be part of a community “helpers.” Thank you! Deacon Steve PS. Let it be known that last weekend our faith community gave back $29,620 for the building of His Kingdom on Earth. Thank you! REFLECTION One of the biggest questions Jesus asked his disciples was “Who do you say that I am?” He wanted to see if they, without being told, could figure him out. Today, Pilate questions Jesus’ identity. Jesus is smart, creative, and curiously evasive when answering Pilate. Sometimes we avoid answering questions when we aren’t sure what the other person wants to hear or what they will do with the answer we give. Jesus knew exactly what was going on, yet he still plays this apparent game of words with Pilate. Jesus never comes right out to say his is a king, but lets Pilate use his own words to say he is king. So, what does it mean to be a king, to have a kingdom with followers and attendants? In our world, and in Pilate’s, it meant power. If Jesus were king in Pilate’s terms, this would not be good for the Roman empire. No one could usurp the power of the government. Pilate misunderstood Jesus’ identity. In God’s realm, kingship means something very different. The Kingdom of God is that of peace, of praise, and a us come to our own decisions and to respond in love—to use the gifts he gives us in this world. ACTION Spend some time in conversation with your parent(s). Ask for their advice on something you may be struggling with in your life right now. Seeking advice from people who love you allows trust to grow and a relationship to strengthen. As you do this with people on earth, it will help with our God in heaven. JOURNALING QUESTIONS Whom do you trust to have control over your life? Parents? Friends? Society? What would it be like to allow Jesus to have full control over your life? What do you need to change to allow your heart to be more open to accept Christ as your King? God’s Word, Your World! 2015–2016 © 2015 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications.
