Reflections, Announcements, & News from the Pastor’s Desk
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
God’s salvation work is the focus of this Sunday’s readings. From the prophetic event of Isaiah, to Jesus’
understanding of the human condition in Hebrews, to Jesus paying our ransom in Mark, God is in control. There may be
failings and misunderstandings along the way. We may move away from God, but God always leads us back. Like James
and John, we may let greed and power blur our vision of the kingdom, but tirelessly Jesus teaches us again and again
what life in God’s kingdom will be. Jesus has paid our ransom to insure that we will have a share with him in the
kingdom.
It is not unusual to think of Jesus’ ransom as a punishment he endured. However, it is more accurate, and more
like Jesus, for us to recognize ransom as God’s gift to us.
SPECIAL SERVANTS
The servant we read about in Isaiah was tormented, mistreated, abandoned, and ridiculed, but he recognized his
purpose as the bearer of the people’s sin. The people were separated from God, but the servant intervened and God
redeemed the people. Christians have come to understand this reading as pointing toward a future event, namely the death
and resurrection of Jesus.
Jesus was tested and came face to face with suffering, but because he suffered for us, we can now approach the
throne of God without fear. While it is sometimes hard for us to understand this, it was equally difficult for the disciples,
James and John. They still did not understand what Jesus’ kingdom was all about. They asked to be the leaders when he
came into his kingdom. Tirelessly, Jesus continued to teach them about the kingdom and that true greatness is loving
service to one another. Jesus demonstrated the ultimate gift of loving service when he gave his life for our sakes. His
sacrifice was not a punishment meted out by God. Rather Jesus gave his life so that we could have a new life and
relationship with God.

We began a tradition in recent years at Corpus Christ Church as we enhanced our celebration of All Souls Day. Please join
us for a special Mass to honor and pray for those who have died in the past year and for all our beloved dead. This Mass will
especially remember parishioners who have died recently and military personnel who have given their lives in service to our
country. It will begin our traditional Novena of Masses to keep our deceased loved ones in our thoughts and prayers. Please
plan to join us. May they, and the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.

integrates our prayer and our way of being in the world.
Dialogue, as an act of justice, impels us to share life in harmony
and peace. Come and explore Pope Francis’ call to Dialogue.
The cost for one person is $15, for two people $25.
Contemplative Dialogue: A Foundation, Nov.6-7, 2015
Contemplative Dialogue brings together the rich tradition of
prayer, contemplation, meditation and dialogue practice as a way
to generate spirituality in every relationship and every moment of
our daily life. This introductory workshop introduces the
foundation of Contemplative Dialogue and gives us a way and a
process to live each day with calm, peace and stability. Come
experience more lightness and joy and a way of conversing and
thinking together that dissolves barriers and obstacles to God’s
love.

GREAT SERVICE
Though Mark’s gospel does
not have the washing of the
disciples’ feet found in the
gospel of John, today’s
passage has a similar message.
While James and John seem to
be close friends of Jesus, they
obviously have not learned
what it means to follow him.
Jesus doesn’t make any
promises of worldly glory, but he does promise a share in his
suffering. Imagine their surprise when he told them that the
greatest of them would be the ones who served the rest.
They probably did not know what Jesus meant about
their being baptized in death as Jesus would. But then how many
people today know that leadership is a form of service? Whether
you are head of a family, or of a nation, you were given that
authority by God. And God expects leaders to not only direct
those under them, but inspire and encourage them to do better.
This connection of leadership and service is all
inclusive. A manager is called to help his employees do their jobs
better, not by badgering, but by giving the support they need.
Military leaders must support their troops with respect as well as
discipline. God calls Church leaders in a special way to service of
their flock: to protect the weakest members, to give an example
of Jesus’ love to all, and to be open to the movement of the Holy
Spirit in both clergy and laity. Anyone who lives a life of loving
service can be “greatest” in the Kingdom of God.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall
bear (Isaiah 53:10-11).
Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you
(Psalm 33).
Second Reading — Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to
receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16).
Gospel — Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all
(Mark 10:35-45 [42-45]).

BEING LOVING SERVANTS
How many times do we notice someone getting a better break than we
do? Whether we cry “foul” in our minds or speak out loud, we want our fair
share. We’re not much different from James and John. But as Jesus taught them,
loving service is the sure way to share in the kingdom. Try not to think big when
you look for ways to serve this week. Some of the best opportunities for service
come in the ordinariness of our lives. Spending time with someone, being
respectful to all the people in our lives, lending a hand even when it’s “not our
job,” these are all quiet opportunities to live lives of service.
Today’s Readings: Is 53:10–11, Ps 33:4–5, 18–20, 22; Heb 4:14–16, Mk 10:35–

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The Irish are rightly tired of being the subject of jokes about guilt. In fact, it is from the Celtic church that the whole
experience of reconciliation in our tradition was creatively rescued and revived. The Irish church was unique in its origins, not
so much organized around dioceses, but around monasteries. Aspects of religious community life readily spilled over into
ordinary gatherings of the faithful, including the way people looked at sin and applied remedies. Unlike the public nature of
canonical penance, the Irish method was linked to a kind of mentoring process they called “soul friending.” Just as young
novice monks might find a mentor in the wisdom of a senior guide, so did a way of penance open up to ordinary folks. Monks
were accustomed to frequent confession of faults to the abbot or mentor, who would suggest penances. In time, abbots with a
certain flair for this began to share lists of sins and corresponding “tariffs” with others. Some of these books survive and
provide a hair raising view of long-ago sins like cattle rustling, and a great deal of self correction involving dips in icy streams
and rolling about in thickets of thorns. After the penance was performed, the penitent returned to the confessor, and in a private
act marked by the laying on of hands or perhaps a kiss of the altar the sinner was restored.
Irish monks were committed travelers, and their methods were widely copied. We might say that they saved a sacrament,
but at the expense of shifting attention to the sins of the individual and away from the actions of the reconciling community.

YOUNG ADULTS Join us for our monthly activities for ages
18-39 years of age. Every first Thursday for Eucharistic
Adoration, Faith Topic, Bible Study, and Off-Campus
fellowship-social (Off-Campus TBD). Our Adoration (in the
church) is an hour long with music and quiet time. Our faith
topics typically relate to the current liturgical season and/or
holiday. Bible studies cover the coming Sunday's readings. The
last Thursday of the month, as a group, we go off campus, be it
bowling or laser tagging, we continue enjoying each others
camaraderie. When there is a fifth Thursday in a month, we
have a service-oriented activity (i.e. write notes or cards to
families of patients in the hospital with words of
encouragement and hope), but there are more service activities
we need to share. Come join us! For more information, please

Reflexiones, Avisos, y Noticias del Escritorio del Pastor
Vigésimo Noveno domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
SIERVOS ESPECIALES
No somos tan diferentes a
Santiago y a Juan.
Lecturas de hoy: Is 53:10–11, Sal 33:4–5, 18–20, 22; Heb 4:14–16, Mc 10:35–45 [42–45]

Nuestra tradición parroquial especial
Recordando a nuestros queridos difuntos
Misa Especial

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
