A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Everyone is welcome to the flock of Jesus. As followers of Christ, we too must act faithfully to reach out to others. As Christ committed his life to being the “one shepherd”, we too must commit ourselves to providing service to all. Thank you to everyone who made a pledge to the diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal last weekend; we have made good progress toward reaching our target. If you have not yet participated, please consider doing so. Your gift will make a real difference in the lives of thousands of individuals and families who reside within our twelve-county diocese. Pledge cards will still be available in the pews next week and can be placed in the offertory basket. Thank you for generosity and support. To learn more about the Annual Catholic Appeal, visit www.cdow.org and click “Giving” then “Annual Catholic Appeal”. May God bless you for your goodness, Father David CAMPAÑA CATÓLICA ANUAL En el evangelio de hoy Jesús nos dice: "Yo soy el buen pastor. The Easter season continues with alleluias permeating the liturgy and our lives. During these days we continue to delve into the story of the early Christian community as Luke’s second volume, Acts of the Apostles, is proclaimed as the first reading at Sunday Eucharist. And in the gospel this weekend we hear once again from the evangelist John. The Fourth Sunday of Easter is known by many as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” This year we hear Jesus telling his disciples—and us-- that He is the good shepherd who “lays down his life for his sheep.” There is no change in the schedule for St. Rose or for Confessions and the Saturday evening liturgy (4:00 and 5:00pm respectively). This weekend we celebrate First Eucharist with our children, their parents, families and friends. What joy to be present to these children as they take this important step. We are reminded that it is not just their parents and guardians who form these children. We all take part in their faith development. For many of us that is done by setting a good example of Christian living for them. May God continue to infuse these children with joy. And may we always be for them the examples they need. Having welcomed them to the Lord’s Table may we encourage them to process with us week after week to the altar seeking God’s heavenly nourishment. May God abundantly bless those celebrating the First Eucharist and may their families grow always closer to Christ and to one another. As summer approaches you can almost feel the anticipation of the weeks ahead. After what seemed for many a long and dreary February/March the weather has turned warm and many are once again planning time off and the opportunity to step back and relax. Parishes at the beach are gearing up for the multitudes, adjusting schedules and adding Sunday Masses to accommodate the visitors. At the same time parishes not in vacation destinations so often make no adjustments; it’s business as usual. Once again this summer our parish will alter its Mass schedule for the summer months. As with many parishes in New Castle County, many of our parishioners are able to take time for vacation and recreation. The summer months take a toll in terms of numbers in attendance and that, in turn, affects the overall celebration of liturgy. Beginning on Sunday, May 24, liturgies at St. Joseph Church will be celebrated at 8:30am and 10:30am. This schedule, beginning on Memorial Day weekend will continue through Sunday of Labor Day weekend (September 6). Presider’s Intentions This week, our presiders will offer Masses for these intentions: Monday, April 27 8:30 AM (SJ) Mary E. Swider Tuesday, April 28 8:30 AM (SJ) St. Peter Chanel & St. Louis Grignion de Montfort Bill Williams, Sr. Wednesday, April 29 St. Catherine of Siena 9:00 AM (SR) George Shestock Thursday, April 30 8:30 AM (SJ) Bill Williams Friday, May 1 8:30 AM (SJ) St. Joseph the Worker Bill Williams Saturday, May 2 5:00 PM (SJ) Bill Williams Sunday, May 3 7:30 AM (SJ) 9:30 AM (SJ) 11:30 AM (SJ) 2:00 PM (SJ) 8:00 AM (SR) 9:30 AM (SR) St. Pius V Fifth Sunday of Easter Frank Collins Our Parishioners Irene Rutkoske Fernando Angeletti Marie Therese Jumain The Word in Our Lives: Readings for May 3, 2015 Fifth Sunday of Easter First Reading: Acts 9:26-31 When Saul arrived in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. Then Barnabas took charge of him and brought him to the apostles, and he reported to them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus. He moved about freely with them in Jerusalem, and spoke out boldly in the name of the Lord. He also spoke and debated with the Hellenists, but they tried to kill him. And when the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him on his way to Tarsus. The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 22:26-27, 28, 30, 31-32 Second Reading: 1 John 3:18-24 Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. Now this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts before him in whatever our hearts condemn, for God is greater than our hearts and knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence in God and receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us. Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them, and the way we know that he remains in us is from the Spirit he gave us. Gospel: John 15:1-8 Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.” Stewardship Wednesday of this week marked the annual observation of Earth Day. As Jesus was the perfect steward, watching carefully over all who have been entrusted to Him by the Father and then sending them all out into the world in service, may we similarly protect and wisely use the earthly resources entrusted to us and do our part to ensure we maintain and/or better yet, improve their condition for our children and generations to come. The collection from last weekend was $14,124 toward our weekly offertory goal of $15,865. This brings our year-to-date total to $662,813 received toward our goal of $666,330. Thank you for accepting the responsibility of faithful stewardship. This week, Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd, promising concern and protection for those who remain in his flock. Bring It Home by gathering family and asking one another how you might share in the Lord’s concern and protection for each other’s. At the end of the discussion, pray “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.” VOCATIONS REFLECTION Referring to Jesus, today’s responsorial psalm declares that “the stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone.” Religious women and men take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience – values often rejected by the dominant culture. Their lives and ministry have been magnificently used by God in the building up of the Body of Christ. Is God calling you to join them? HELP SAVE TRANSPORTATION STIPENDS FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOL FAMILIES Each year, parents who send their children to Catholic schools in Delaware save the State an estimated $150 million while supporting Delaware's public schools with their taxes. Catholic school parents pay the same taxes that neighboring public school parents pay, without the benefit. In return, the State gives these families a minimal stipend to reimburse them for a small percentage of their annual transportation costs. For the second consecutive year, Governor Jack Markell is trying to unfairly eliminate this modest stipend. Last year, the Delaware General Assembly Joint Finance Committee, at the urging of Catholic school families and supporters, restored funding for the stipend in the FY 2015 budget. Once again, we need your help to tell members of the Joint Finance Committee that families who sacrifice to send their children to Catholic schools deserve to keep their transportation reimbursement stipend. Even if you sent an email to your representative in the past, we are asking you to do it again. Go to www.cdow.org, click on the school bus photo and follow the easy steps to let your voice be heard.
