Our beautiful second church dedicated in
1960. We were established as a parish in 1927.
However, regular Sunday Masses began in Covina
in 1909. Our first permanent church was opened
in 1911. The story of our faith presence in this area
begins in 1771 with the founding of the San Gabriel
Mission; five years before the American Revolution.

Eucharistic Adoration
Every first Friday of the month Sacred Heart
Parish has Eucharistic Adoration following the
8:15 mass and continuing until the 5:30pm
mass.
Canon Law 942 specifically states: “that this
kind of exposition is to be held only if a
suitable gathering of the faithful is foreseen
and the established norms are observed.”
Therefore beginning in July a sign-up sheet will
be provided in the vestibule of the church for
those who wish to insure that someone is
always present during the exposition. If
however, “suitable” signups are not
experienced it may be necessary to have this
beautiful adoration experience stopped.
Deacon Ron has agreed to maintain this signup posting and place it in a suitable place. For
further information contact him at 626-347-7673
Bulletin Announcement Deadline
All announcements for the bulletin must be
submitted no later than noon on Tuesday.
Announcements may be dropped off to the Parish
Center, faxed to (626) 967-4884 or emailed to

to approval and space permitting for publishing.

Independence Day
We will continue our wonderful tradition of the Anointing
the Sick after the morning Mass on the First Saturday of the
month. However, this July, it falls on our most important civic
holiday for which we expect a large crowd and longer Mass.
This very special occasion stands out and stands alone among
our American holidays. The Anointing of the Sick after the
morning Mass, on July 4th, is CANCELED.
In case of a medical emergency please call and we will be
happy to respond. The First Saturday tradition will resume in
August; we look forward to seeing you then.
PRAYER FOR PARISH PRIESTS

Parish Center Chapel on Thursdays, at 9:15 AM, for
the benefit of our Parish Priests. Please be part of
providing this support for all they do. Everyone is

Fair Trade Sale:
Third World Gifts & Handarts will be having
a sale of fair trade products, including those of
Homeboy Industries/Homegirl Catering, here
following our Vigil Mass on Saturday, June 27 and
all masses on Sunday, June 28. Since their founding
at a parish in Anaheim in 1975, they have
continuously operated as a year-round, nonprofit
marketing service for impoverished artisans in many
developing nations and in low-income areas of the
United States. This assistance directly supports the
survival of thousands of artisans and food producers,
as well as their families. They operate a gift shop in
Orange and can be reached at 714/777-4551.
During their visit, you may bring these
donations for their ongoing collection drive for
Catholic missions serving the poor in Mexico, and
low-income Native Americans in the Southwest:
clothing, blankets and linens (freshly laundered,
please); school supplies; new backpacks; hygiene
products, baby items; housewares and nutritious
foods. Thank you!
You can also help by donating the following
which they deliver to local families in need, to
missions on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, and
to the Missionaries of Charity’s missions (founded
by Mother Teresa) in Tijuana: blankets, linens and
clothing (freshly laundered, please), toys, childrens’
books, cookware, paint, hardware, tools, furniture
and small appliances. They are especially in need of
blankets, school supplies and hygiene products. You
may bring them to their craft sale here, or you may
call them to arrange for a pickup of your donations
any time, year-round. You may contact them at
714/288-1434. Thank you!

Religious Ed/ Youth Ministry News :
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS:
Our Religious Education classes have come
to an end for the 2015 - 2016 school year, and
we extend a special thank you to the many
volunteers who have made it all possible by
sharing their time, talents, and love of God with
the youth of our parish. We have been blessed
by their dedication, loyalty, and kindness. They
have shown what it means to be a true Christian,
by responding to the call to bring God’s love and
good news to our youth. Without their help we
could not have survived! Thank you for blessing
our parish with your ministry. If you would like
to volunteer for this very important ministry,
please contact the Religious Education Office at
626-331-7914.
We also would like to extend our thanks
to the parents/guardians for allowing us the
opportunity to work with you as a partner in the
faith formation of your children. Teaching your
children about their faith has been a privilege.
Although our Religious Education has come to an
end for this session, religious formation in the
home has no season. Children’s faith will
continue to grow strong through the summer
months ahead in family prayer, weekly Mass
attendance, play, and service to others. Please
do not neglect to re-register your children for
our fall program. Attending classes regularly is a
significant part of your child’s faith development
and helps them to develop a deeper
understanding of his/her relationship to our Lord
and our faith community. Registration

THE LORD OF LIFE
At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings
teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from
the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark
assure us that God did not make death or even will us to
be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the
presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark’s
stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and
resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is
from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone
suffer illness or death. In the face of such power, the
second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to the
Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could
raise the dead to new life, “though he was rich, for your
sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new
life from Christ demands our response in charity.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey
Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters,
the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at
church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was
setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five.
The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the
fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the
porch of the parish church. The goal was to give
maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride,
and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a
public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and
begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He
needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and
give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to
pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the
monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then
would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass,
during which the bride and groom would hold lighted
candles. The gradual move from home to church and the
shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority
helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite
as confident as the Wife of Bath.

DID YOU KNOW?
By teaching “total body safety” we further
efforts to stop abuse
Parents and caregivers should stress that a
child’s entire body is private and be watchful of
adults who might be “grooming” a child by
constantly tickling, kissing, or hugging them. A
child will often tell a parent he or she does not
want to hug or kiss someone – and parents
should listen and respect their wishes. By
teaching “total body safety” to adults, children,
and young people, we are furthering our efforts
to stop abuse and to make the world a safer place
for all of God’s children.

DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR
DO NOT LEAVE IN PEW
Dear Friends,
We are blessed to live in a beautiful community and our
two local cities of Covina and West Covina are safe
neighborhoods with little crime and good neighbors.
However there are always a few problems; because of that
sad reality I must remind you to:
Please NEVER leave any valuables visible in your car
and NEVER let anyone see you storing them under your seat or in the trunk for example (store
them safely out of site before you leave home).
And please NEVER leave your purse or any valuables
in the pews even when you come up for
Communion.
During a recent two month period: we had one report of a
lady who left her purse in the pew during Communion,
only to return and find it missing. Also during the same
period a car was broken into (window shattered) and a lap
top taken just minutes after the driver hid it under the seat.
Please be very careful here & everywhere. God bless you.

Activity Room in the Parish Center
The Sacred Heart Conference of the Society of St.Vincent de
Paul invites you to join it in silent works of charity:
Quietly, discreetly aiding needy families.
Personal visits to homes, hospitals, and institutions.
Seeking and serving the distressed.
Growing spiritually through a gift of self to others.
The purpose of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is to fulfill
the two great Commandments-love of God and love of neighbor. We seek out God’s needy, both materially and spiritually,
and help where we can. No need is too great or too small.
If you feel you are called to this ministry, please join us at
our next meeting.

Peter, do you love me? Pedro le responde: Lord, you
know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice:
“Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”.
La diferencia es casi imperceptible, pero importante.
El texto original fue escrito en griego y usaba dos
palabras que significan amor, ágape (amor que se
sacrifica) y fileo (amor fraterno).
