Holyoke Update – February 5, 2016
Dear Friends, Colleagues, Partners and Families:
Teachers matter. The most important factor in student achievement is the
quality of the teacher in the classroom. Nothing matters as much as the person
standing in front of Holyoke’s students – not the neighborhood they live in or
the resources they have access to. Nothing is as important as the teacher.
Research is clear, nothing else matters as much as the person standing in front
of those students, their teacher.
Last summer we hired 120 new teachers into the district, many of those hires
were made just before the start of the school year. We know that teachers have
greater success if they have a strong summer induction and orientation to their
school well before the first day of school. I am committed to hiring great
teachers for Holyoke students and to have all vacancies filled by August 1st.
I am very pleased to share an exciting partnership that will support our efforts
to attract and retain top talent in Holyoke classrooms and to meet this
important goal. With our colleagues in Springfield at the Springfield
Empowerment Zone, The Davis Foundation, and DESE, we have established a
partnership called “Teach Western Mass.” Teach Western Mass is established to
brand and promote the employment opportunities in our region for teachers and
leaders interested in working in turnaround schools. I have included the link to

SECONDARY REDESIGN TEAM MEETING FOR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS Thursday, February 11, 2016 from 6:00-7:30 PM at Holyoke High School’s Cafeteria The Secondary Redesign Team consists of a group of teachers, statewide secondary school leaders, higher education
officials and workforce development leaders who have been meeting since October to craft a series of recommendations
for the secondary experience in Holyoke. They have visited schools across the state, facilitated focus groups with
students, studied the best practices in high school design and reviewed multiple data points. It has been their intent to
examine how to establish pathways that individualize the learning experience for students as they move from middle
school through high school and ultimately to college and/or career. We are confident that their guidance will result in
improved outcomes for students during their high school career and ensure that students leave our schools with the
preparation to thrive beyond the Holyoke Public Schools. We look forward to sharing these recommendations at this

2 SCHOOL BRIEFS KELLY NOTES The Kelly Full Service Community School is grateful to SnapFitness for their donation of two exercise
bikes for our students. This equipment will benefit Kelly students in increasing movement and encourage a
focus on health and fitness in partnership with academic success.
DEAN NOTES Dean Technical High School’s warm outwear drive continues this week. We are thankful for the donations
we have received so far, but continue to need warm items. Items can be dropped off at Dean's main office.
Dean is uniting to help prevent heart disease and stroke. Heart disease and stroke kill 1 in 3 women, yet it is
80% preventable. This week at Dean we're uniting to help prevent heart disease and stroke. On Friday, Dean
students, staff and faculty were invited to wear red along with others across the nation, in the American
Heart Association's Wear Red campaign. Dean is raising awareness about heart disease and stroke in
women.

View a complete schedule of events at the Gateway City Arts website http://www.gatewaycityarts.com/ All activities are free of charge except the Saturday evening concert. 3 FEBRUARY 26TH FRIENDS OF THE HOLYOKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS – ANNUAL FUNDRAISER The annual fundraising event held by the Friends of Holyoke Public Schools (HPS) will feature the lmprov Asylum on Friday, February 26th at the Log Cabin in Holyoke. Event tickets are available for purchase on their website http://www.friendshps.org. All money raised goes directly to providing new learning experiences in the arts and to support early literacy through their grants program. FHPS is a 501(c)(3) that seeks funding from many sources to support special learning opportunities for students in the Holyoke Public Schools. Most notably, FHPS has funded the Summer String Program since 2008, which allows students from our schools to attend camp for four weeks and be introduced to the violin and cello for free. Students also receive instruction in yoga, chorus and reading, and have field trips and performances at Western MA venues. FHPS also funded the following activities for HPS students: • Enchanted Circle Theater Storm Drain Art Project • Mass. Los maestros son importante. El factor más importante en el

estudiantes de Holyoke – no es el barrio en que viven o los recursos que

El verano pasado contratamos a 120 nuevos maestros en el distrito, muchas
de esas contrataciones se hicieron justo antes del inicio del año escolar.
Sabemos que los maestros tienen un mayor éxito si tienen una fuerte
inducción de verano y la orientación de su escuela mucho antes del primer
día de clases. Estoy comprometido con la contratación de grandes
maestros para los estudiantes de Holyoke y tener todas las vacantes
cubiertas para el 1 de agosto.

6 NOTICIAS BREVES ESCOLARES NOTAS DE KELLY La Escuela Kelly de Servicio Completo de la Comunidad Escolar esta agradecida con SnapFitness por su donación de dos bicicletas estáticas para nuestros estudiantes.
