Holyoke Update – December 18, 2015
Dear HPS Educators, Students, Families, Partners and Friends, It was a pleasure to open this Monday’s School Committee meeting with the Kelly School Coqui Dancers. I invited this group to perform on Monday since I have enjoyed watching their performances throughout the district this fall at cultural heritage celebrations in our schools. Their enthusiasm, skill and talent comes from hard work, lots of practice and the support of their families and other caring adults. They represent the best of HPS. During this meeting I also had the honor of celebrating the incredible achievement of two high school seniors and presenting them with Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents Certificate of Academic Excellence Awards. These awards are presented to the high school senior with the highest GPA in their class. Congratulations to Laura Ernst from Holyoke High School and Edeni Colon from Dean Technical High School, who both plan on pursuing careers in the medical field. Edeni will attend University of Maine at Farmington to study medical rehabilitation. In closing, I want to thank all of the families and staff that participated in the focus groups about our special education program this week, especially the TIP Peck parents who have shared their stories with me. I am grateful for your candor and pledge to do everything I can to better serve all children in our schools. I also want to acknowledge the many educators in our district who take great care to support and engage their students in positive and respectful ways each day. I am grateful for their commitment to our students. HOLYOKE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS RAISE VOICES IN SONG FOR MMEA DISTRICT AUDITIONS Enthused students Bridie Bowler, Jalen Cortes, Abigale Febus, Sixto Morera, Kayla Neal, and Destiny Rodriguez gathered together on December 5th, 2015 to sing their auditions at the annual MMEA Western District Auditions at Westfield State University. Under the guidance and direction of Ms. Amanda Metcalfe, these students spent the last few months preparing for the audition on The Names with asterisks voice. indicate acceptance into the Western District Festival. Western District Auditions are a highly competitive opportunity for Students, left to right include: students from the surrounding Abigale Febus. Kayla Neal, Sixto Morera*, Jalen Cortes*, cities of Western Massachusetts Destiny Rodriguez and Bridie to perform for the chance to be Bowler*. selected for an elite performing ensemble. This year, we are proud Front row ‐ Amanda Metcalfe, to announce that three of our six music director and sponsor of the auditionees. students made the cut for auditions and will be performing in the Western Massachusetts District Festival. Bridie Bowler, Jalen Cortes, and Sixto Morera will be representing the Sullivan School in the Western District Choral Ensembles this year. This is also Jalen’s second year qualifying for a spot in the male chorus. Congratulations to all six students and their teacher, Ms. Metcalfe! The Western Massachusetts District Festival Concert will be held Saturday, March 19th at 5:00 PM at the Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, MA. Tickets will be sold in advance for $7 or can be purchased at the door on the day of the concert for $10. HOLYOKE HIGH TO PARTICIPATE IN GAME CHANGE: THE PATRIOTS ANTI‐VIOLENCE PARTNERSHIP Attorney General Maura Healey recently announced that Holyoke High School was selected to participate in the first phase of her office’s new anti‐violence partnership with the New England Patriots. There are 98 schools from six regions across the commonwealth that will be participating in this initiative that is being funded by a $500,000 gift from the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation and $150,000 from Healey’s office. Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society Dan Lebowitz explained in a recent statement that the purpose of the initiative is “to empower young people, teachers and coaches with the skills and tools they need to promote healthy relationships and to recognize and prevent teen dating violence in their schools and communities.” 2 Game Change: The Patriots Anti‐Violence Partnership will train two adult representatives from each school at six regional trainings across Massachusetts. The program will also include online support tools for schools and an evaluation component to determine the effectiveness of the program in changing attitudes and behaviors. Holyoke High School applied for Game Change as a part of a partnership with Womanshelter/Companeras. HOLYOKE HIGH RECEIVES GRANT FROM JAMES PATTERSON AND SCHOLASTIC READING CLUB FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY Holyoke High School received a grant from bestselling author James Patterson to support its school library. In addition, Scholastic Reading Club will match each dollar of Patterson’s donation with “bonus points” that teachers can use to acquire books and other materials for their classrooms. Holyoke High School was selected from 27,924 applications for funding grants. The full list of grant recipients is available online at www.scholastic.com/pattersonpartnership. Any U.S. school with students from pre‐kindergarten to 12th grade was eligible for a grant. Patterson hopes that the high volume of requests will raise awareness for the problems facing school libraries today. ELL STRATEGIES WORKSHOP FOR GRADES 6‐12 STEM TEACHERS ‐ JANUARY 11TH ‐ 12TH AT HOLYOKE HIGH SCHOOL This 2‐Day workshop will focus on establishing a classroom where students are encouraged and empowered to read, write, listen and speak the language of math and science. Strategies will help with introducing and reinforcing vocabulary, ensuring all students participate every day while helping to maintain efficiency of both teacher and classroom time. These strategies can be used by science/math teachers to help English Language Learners master content and acquire the skills needed to be successful in math and science coursework. MCMAHON SCHOOL’S CAREER DAY On December 11th, Mrs. DiCarlo and Mrs Giroux's grade 3 classrooms at McMahon school had their first career day. Many parents came in and talked to the students about their careers. Visitors included a funeral director, nurse assistant, rehabilitation counselor,occupational therapy, teacher's aide, home healthcare worker, cook, representatives from CareerPoint and the May Center. The students asked many questions and Nicholas Rodriguez and his mom Mary enjoyed their time with their Koch. She is a funeral director at Barry Farrell Funeral Home in Holyoke, MA. parents/visitors. Light refreshments were served. After the presentation, students wrote journal entries about their favorite career and wrote about what career they would like to pursue. She is an occupational therapist. 3 LAWRENCE SCHOOL’S AFTER SCHOOL MENTOR PROJECT A new after‐school mentor project has just begun at Lawrence School that is funded by a grant from the Linda Schulman Innovation Fund. The Project involves pairing grade three English Language Learners with high school and college‐aged mentors who are/have been English Language Learners themselves and have found success in school. The students meet on Tuesday afternoons and the project will culminate in formal, videotaped interviews between the third graders and their mentors. There is still room for more Lawrence third graders to participate in this project. SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL (SEPAC) MEETING Come and join the Holyoke Public Schools’ psychologists for a presentation on: “Overview of Psycho‐Educational Evaluations” on Monday, January 4, 2016 at the Donahue School library (210 Whiting Farms Road) from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. EXPANDING THE SCHOOL DAY In collaboration with Representative Vega, the Holyoke Public Schools recently held a meeting with community partners to discuss plans for expanding the school day for elementary schools. Nearly fifty people attended. Priscilla and Celine from Enchanted Circle Theatre presented on their partnerships with Metcalf and Morgan schools that occur during the school day. FRIENDS OF THE HOLYOKE PUBLIC SCHOOLS – ANNUAL FUNDRAISER The annual fundraising event held by the Friends of Holyoke Public Schools (HPS) will feature the lmprov Asylum on Friday, February 26th at the Log Cabin in Holyoke. FHPS is a 501(c)(3) that seeks funding from many sources to support special learning opportunities for students in the Holyoke Public Schools. Most notably, FHPS has funded the Summer String Program since 2008, which allows students from our schools to attend camp for four weeks and be introduced to the violin and cello for free. Students also receive instruction in yoga, chorus and reading, and have field trips and performances at Western MA venues. PROYECTO MENTOR DE LA ESCUELA LAWRENCE DESPUES DE HORAS ESCOLARES Un nuevo proyecto mentor despues de horas escolares acaba de comenzar en la Escuela Lawrence que está financiada por una beca del Fondo de Innovación de Linda Schulman.
