Prayer For/Oremos Por
To assist St. Augustine’s during the transition in administering to
the sick we are asking your cooperation when submitting names for the
Prayers of the Faithful and names to be added to the bulletin listing of
the sick. The office staff will be requesting some details such as
contact name, phone number, address, etc. This will help determine the
need for a clerical visit or assistance through a Eucharistic Minister for
the homebound. The bulletin listing of the sick will be grouped biweekly so that we all can be aware of those newly added to the listing.
The bulletin will maintain the listings for three months unless otherwise
specified to be listed indefinitely. After three months names can be
added once again if not otherwise listed as indefinite. We will begin
with the names presently included within the Prayers of the Faithful.
Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION
Preparing for the Sunday readings
Go to liturgy.slu.edu
One of the keys to dealing with Mercy is starting with
prayer.
8 Tips on How to Pray Every Day By Dr. Taylor Marshall
Here are tips in no particular order:
 Find a place in your home where you pray. Designate a space.
 Find a time in the day when you pray. The prophets and the saints
usually got up early to pray. Set your alarm clock earlier (go to bed
earlier) and wake up to be with Christ in the morning.
 Create a morning ritual that includes prayer. I recommend that it
include Scriptural reading, also. The Bible is how God usually talks
to you. “God never talks to me,” people often say. My response is,
“Are you reading the Bible?” God talks to you in Scripture.
 Use a timer on your phone. Start at 5 minutes and work up to 30
minutes daily.
 Mental prayer is using your mind (“mental”) to speak to God. Tell
him everything. Speak with your heart. Ask Him questions about
your life. Ask Him theology questions? Ask Him to do more than
you expect. Don’t be afraid to ask for insanely crazy requests. He
likes to answer those best because they prove that we didn’t accomplish it.
 Keep a New Testament or spiritual reading book nearby. If you’re
mind loses track and wanders. Use this book to read a few sentences
to focus again on Christ or spiritual thoughts.
 Use your daily time to fill yourself with positivity. The people that I
know that pray 30-60 minutes every day are very positive thinkers.
Why? Because they spend time with God and learn that all things are
possible through Christ. Faith and prayer build confidence and a “get
it done” attitude. The most pessimistic (and lazy) people are the
people who do not pray or do not spend time alone in silence. “Be
still and know that I am God.”
 Make daily prayer your identity. Repeatedly tell yourself: “I am a
person who talks to the Trinity every day. That is who I am and I
always do it.” Become what you are.

REFLECTION
5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything
and followed him." Just when business was finally booming,
Simon and Company closed up shop. The timing was strange,
really. After a lifetime of fishing to make a living, these men had
just hauled in so many fish that "their nets were tearing" and "the
boats were in danger of sinking." Just imagine the profit on the
other side of this night's work! Just imagine how their reputation
would have grown. How easy it would have been to go out and
buy a new fleet of boats and to upgrade their stash of nets. Most
likely for the first time, wealth was within reach.
And yet, just then, Simon, James, and John left their boats on the
shore and followed Jesus in the task of "catching men." This is
astonishing. Not only did they give up their sudden monetary
success, they gave up EVERYTHING. In a moment's time, these
men radically altered their life, their plans, their future, and their
fortune. And civilization has never been the same since.
Thanks in large part to the courage of these first apostles, and of
their successors the bishops, and of all the faithful men and
women religious throughout history who have "left everything
and followed him," our church has continued to flourish and our
culture has been greatly enhanced. Those of us who are members
of the laity are likewise called to follow Christ, of course. The
tremendous sacrifices that priests and religious sisters make
should inspire us, and remind us that serving Christ-at any cost-is
worth it. Their lives stand as a powerful witness indeed. Today,
let us pause to thank God for these men and women and to ask
his blessing on them all.

Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al)
Luke, the Gospel Writer: Luke authored the Gospel bearing his name
but was a close friend of the Apostle Paul and accompanied Paul on his
missionary journeys. Bible scholars also attribute the book of the Acts
of the Apostles to Luke. Most experts date Luke's writings to around 80
-90 AD, although some suggest 90-110. This record of how the church
got started in Jerusalem is packed with vivid details, as is Luke's
Gospel. Some credit Luke's training as a medical doctor for his attention to accuracy. Many mistakenly believe he was one of the 12
Apostles. Luke was a gentile, probably a Greek. He may have been
converted to Christianity by Paul. He probably studied to be a physician
in Antioch, in Syria. In the ancient world, Egyptians were the most
skilled in medicine, having taken centuries to perfect their art. First
century doctors like Luke could perform minor surgery, treat wounds,
and administer herbal remedies for everything from indigestion to insomnia. No definite information is available about Luke's death. One
early source says he died of natural causes at age 84 in Boeatia, while
another church legend says Luke was martyred by idolatrous priests in
Greece by being hanged from an olive tree.

Children’s Liturgy A few of our leaders for Children’s Liturgy had the
children color Christmas cards for the men and women serving our country. They received a beautiful “Thank You” from Lt. Col David
Bettinge.
Dear Children of St. Augustine Church,
Thank you very much for the kind thoughts and cards during the holiday
season. Having attended your church when I was young it wormed my heart
during the cold Afghan winter.
My unit here would like to express our appreciation for reminding us of the
future generations at home. As we stride to support the country here in its
effort create a society based in common human values, we know our job is
limited and soon we will be back home.
Hopefully our efforts will make this land more merciful by our example.
Sincerely,

¿Cuántas veces en mi vida he dicho: "Aquí estoy
y responde: "Aquí estoy, Señor, envíame" (Is 6, 8).
