LENTEN REGULATIONS
Abstinence – Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the
obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash
Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence,
meat may not be eaten at all.
Fast – Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th
year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday are the days of fasting. On these days, only one full
meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but
together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between
meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.
These Lenten regulations state the minimum requirements. Other recommended practices during this season include participating in daily Mass and fasting on other days.

have not already done so, please prayerfully consider making an
early pledge. Our parish directly benefits from the 50 ministries

ON THE BULLETIN COVER
St. Francis
This week’s cover features the work of one of the children in the
Catechetical Program. Andy Ramirez, who was recently received
as a catechumen and will become a Catholic next year, made this
artwork of St. Francis of Assisi praising Brother Sun. The
children are learning so much about how to praise and serve the
Lord by studying the life of this Saint. May Andy’s work help
you to praise the Creator of all that is good.
Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you
nothing that you have received - only what you have given:
a full heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.
– Saint Francis of Assisi

SAINT MARY PARISH
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Last week we took the Christmas trees down after the Feast of
the Presentation of the Lord. Forty days after Jesus was born in
Bethlehem, his parents brought their firstborn son to the Temple
in Jerusalem to offer him back to the Lord. I pray that the
memory of Christ birth and God becoming man remains strong
within you every day especially as we enter the next sacred forty
days of Lent. Lent is marked by three actions – prayer, fasting
and almsgiving. All three go together. Lent is the preparation
time for the victory of Easter. Lent is the training and
strengthening period for the big day – the day of the Lord. Lent
is the great fast before the great feast. May you grow in wisdom
and grace. May you make time to read the Scriptures… and
Listen to God. May you spend time talking to God in prayer.
May you not forget that to gain your life you must be willing to
lose it… by living for the Lord and others. May this Lent help
you become who you are.
– Father Michael

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In the Gospel today, the disciples decide to leave everything to
follow Jesus. We are also called to follow Jesus, who tells us that
“whatever you do to the least of mine, you do for me.”
Your gift to the poor can bring the love and peace of Jesus to
those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.
O God, there are those who do not know your presence, may our
lives be a sign of faith for them. O God, there are those who live
in fear and doubt, may our lives be a sign of hope for them. O
God, there are those who do not experience your love, may our
lives be a sign of love for them. O God, there are those who are
poor and oppressed by others, may our lives be a sign of justice
for them. Amen

SAINT CHARLES PARISH
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
The 40 Day Fast begins this Wednesday. The purpose of Lent
is to keep alive in our consciousness the fact that being a
Christian can only take the form of becoming a Christian ever
anew; that it is not an event now over and done with but a
process requiring constant practice. Practice means that we have
not reached perfection yet. The sports team at the top of the
standings usually drops to the bottom the moment they don’t
bother to practice. A lot of people shy away from the concept of
perfection but there is no need for this. Christian perfection isn’t
being better than others – it is becoming who you are; who God
made you to be. Perfection helps us battle the temptation ‘to just
get along’ or ‘to just go along’ in life. Prayer, fasting and
almsgiving are the practices we take on these days in order
become a Christian. They are healthy ways we deny ourselves in
order to anticipate and really look forward to the feast of Easter
and life eternal in the Kingdom of God. May you deny
yourselves this Lent and enjoy the freedom of the children of
God.
– Father Michael

THE NAME OF GOD IS MERCY – POPE FRANCIS
Pope Francis has put together a book on Mercy. It is very helpful. For the rest of the year of Mercy, we will share
some of his thoughts. The book is written in question and answer format.
Q: W hy, in your opinion, is hum anity so in need of m ercy?
A: Because humanity is wounded, deeply wounded. Either it does not know how to cur e its wounds or it believes that it’s not possible to cure them. And it’s not just a question of social ills or people wounded by poverty, social exclusion, or one of the many slaveries of the third millennium. Relativism wounds people too: all things seem
equal, all things appear the same. Humanity needs mercy and compassion. Pius XII, more than half a century ago,
said that the tragedy of our age was that it had lost its sense of sin, the awareness of sin. Today we add further to the
tragedy by considering our illness, our sins, to be incurable, things that cannot be healed or forgiven. We lack the actual concrete experience of mercy. The fragility of our era is this, too: we don’t believe that there is a chance for redemption; for a hand to raise you up;
for an embrace to save you, forgive you, pick you up, flood you with infinite, patient, indulgent love; to put you back on your feet. We
need mercy. We need to ask ourselves why today so many people, men and women, young and old, of every social class, go to psychics and fortune-tellers. Cardinal Giacomo Biffi used to quote these words by the English writer G. K. Chesterton: “When Man ceases
to worship God he does not worship nothing but worships everything.” Once I heard a person say: In my grandmother’s time a confessor was enough, but today lots of people go to fortune-tellers. Today people try to find salvation wherever they can.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Queridos hermanos en Cristo:
Hace unos días me preguntaron que si un católico podría asistir
a servicios de otras religiones o grupos protestantes. Obviamente
