Family Life Family life is sacred, but it is not without trial. Perhaps this is the most important message we can glean from today’s readings. If Jesus, Mary, and Joseph can trip up sometimes—can disconnect—then we shouldn’t find it surprising when such things happen to us as well. And parents everywhere (children, too) can probably relate to—and take some solace in—the Gospel’s account of Mary and Joseph after Jesus explained why he stayed behind in the temple. They heard his words, Luke tells us, “But they did not understand what he said to them” (Luke 2:50). Amen! Nevertheless, Jesus does go back home with them, and continues to thrive under their care. This beautiful stained glass window is located on the north wall of the Cry Room in our Church. What’s on the front cover? Our Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration! December 12th is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, unborn children, and the New Evangelization. Our Lady of Guadalupe is, unlike any other apparition of the Virgin Mary, the only apparition where Our Lady left a miraculous image of herself unmade by human hands and the only universally venerated Madonna & Child image where Our Lady appears pregnant instead of holding the Infant Jesus. This year, we celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with the traditional “mañanitas” at 5:00 am Mass, followed by a pilgrimage from the Fort Smith Park back to the church. The pilgrimage was over 5 miles long! During the pilgrimage, we prayed the Rosary, sang and danced to the Virgin of Guadalupe. After the pilgrimage, we had a wonderful festival where children and adults presented traditional Mexican dances honoring our beloved Virgin of Guadalupe. It was a day filled with devotion and joy! A Family Feast In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today’s. After World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today’s feast was “invented” in 1921. In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commitments. The lives of people who raise their children in difficult circumstances, and of people Living and Praying with the Word who remain faithful to life in the Church Loving God, the Church gives us the life of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus as an example of in spite of some of their own family holy living. Help us express the truth of Mary’s anxiety, Jesus’ confidence, and Joseph’s struggles, occupy a special place in our faithfulness to you in ways that deepen our faith and free us to grow in your love. hearts today in prayer. The feast of the Holy Innocents is an excellent time for parents to inaugurate the custom of blessing their children. All parents need to do is make the sign of the Cross with your hand over each child while saying: "May God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit keep you safe.” The custom of blessing children is easiest to establish with a baby or toddler and it grows with them. Religious Education Dear IC Parishioners, One of the hardest things to do, right now, is find a quiet time and place to sit with God and bask in the season of Advent. We can be so concerned with the “Stuff” we are supposed to “DO” and gifts we are supposed to buy and places we are supposed to be, that we miss the real meaning of this particular season. We are once again preparing to receive the most precious gift we have ever been given and that is Jesus Himself. One small, poor, feared, hunted and despised baby boy whose very entrance into humanity changed the course of history itself. What better story could we possibly reflect on? What other event in our lives has made such an impact? What difference has it made for any one person? What difference does it make to me? How is my life better (or worse) because Jesus was born? As I make the effort to spend time reflecting on all of this, my heart aches for those who have never known (or refused to accept) the story we hear once again, “The Birth of our Lord and King”. I pray that I would have the grace to lovingly and willingly and openly share His story. I pray you all find (make) the time to sit with God and consider the beauty of God welcoming His Son into the world.
