Class Credits: 4 Instructor E-mail: [email protected] Course Description: This program is designed to develop the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The emphasis of this first semester is conversational proficiency, and those structures used in frequently occurring language situations will be stressed. The fundamentals of grammar will be presented. You will be expected to participate orally in class and to interact meaningfully with your teacher and classmates in Spanish. Lecture 4 hours per week. This course is specifically intended for those students who have no previous experience with the Spanish language. It is the first course of four, which can be used to fulfill your Humanities or Liberal Arts language requirement. In addition to acquiring skills in using Spanish, you will be gaining knowledge about how the Spanish language, and by comparison, the English language, are structured. Learning Outcomes: Listening: Understand short conversations and responses to your questions. You may need to ask for repetition or a slower rate of speed for comprehension. Speaking: Carry on a simple conversation; talk about yourself and others in some areas of daily life. The student will exhibit strong interference from the native language. Speech may be disconnected but understandable to someone with experience dealing with non-native speakers. Reading: Read simple documents such as signs, menus, timetables and ads Writing: Write information on simple forms and documents, write autobiographical information and short lists. Textbook and Supplies: Guzmán et al. Unidos: An Interactive Approach (1st edition). Textbook or Ebook and MySpanishLab access required. Please take the following schedule as a guideline. If you begin to find that you are having a difficult time completing your work, especially in the short period between a Monday and a Wednesday class, you will need to plan to spread your work out more evenly during the week. As long as you have everything ready prior to each class meeting as scheduled, it is fine to work ahead a bit at your own pace. (For example, you could choose to complete work due Monday by Saturday or Sunday, allowing you more time to finish what is due by Wednesday). The important thing to remember is that MySpanishLab is set up so that you can learn grammar and vocabulary ahead of class time, freeing us up to practice conversation and pronunciation, as well as answering lingering questions. I will not be “teaching” grammar or vocabulary in class in most cases. That job belongs to each of you in your homework/study time. This is called a “flipped hybrid” class model and it can be extremely effective for students who are able to put in the necessary time and effort! Finally: be sure to get contact information from someone in class, in the event you can’t be there one day. YOU are responsible for knowing what went on in class and any changes that may have been required to our calendar. I will also make every effort to post needed changes to Blackboard and MySpanishLab.
