OCTOBER 25, 2015 Reflection - Saint Anthony Catholic Church in

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 25, 2015
Reflection
In the last three weeks, we have been reading from
the tenth chapter of the gospel of St Mark which has been
dealing with our patterned reactions to life situations.
Mark started with the Pharisees testing Jesus with the
question which they knew the answer: “Is it lawful for a
man to divorce his wife?” (Mk.10:2-16). When Jesus had
done with the issue of divorce, a rich young man curiously approached him with the question which he knew
the answer: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit
eternal life?” (Mk.10:17-30). When Jesus had finished
with it, two brothers among his group came up to him with
the demand which they knew was not so easy to grant:
“Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your
left, in your glory” (Mk.10:35-45). These are maneuvers in
human nature which they employed to win their battle of
life because they knew the answers to their questions
and demands. But because their minds were rooted in
denial and illusions, they refused to accept the obvious.
They showed lack of insight in life situation.
In today’s gospel which is the last part of chapter
ten of St Marks gospel (Mk.10:46-52), Bartimaeus the
blind man could see Jesus more clearly than everyone
who had physical sight. He was sitting by the roadside of
Jericho-Jerusalem road, begging for alms. Jesus had
predicted for the third time that he would suffer terribly in
Jerusalem in the hands of the Jewish Sanhedrin who
would put him to death by crucifixion He courageously
moved towards Jerusalem taking the Jericho road. Bartimaeus must have heard that Jesus was passing through
that road, so he raised his voice desperately but with faith
and called on him: “Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on
me.” Those few words had a lot to say about the identity
of Jesus. Bartimaeus by those desperate but appealing
words was acknowledging with faith that Jesus was both
the King in the line of his ancestor David and the Messiah. Even the voices of people around him could not
silence him from that proclamation.
Jesus could hear Bartimaeus more clearly than the
noise of those around him. Jesus invited him to come. It
was the same voices that tried to stop him from calling
the attention of Jesus that were encouraging him to go

and meet him. He knew what he wanted, so when Jesus
asked him “What do you want me to do for you,” he did not
waste time in answering him, “Lord that I may see.” Bartimaeus might not have had the sight but he had the insight
to recognize Jesus, to know what he wanted and to accept
the reality of the healing power of Jesus.
The problem we have as human beings and which this
encounter between Jesus and Bartimaeus wants to point
out to us is that sometimes we have out of denial and illusion failed to accept the reality of our faith. In the midst of
confusion in our lives, we will no longer know what Jesus
can do for us. This is where the real blindness lies. We
hear many voices trying to draw our minds away from what
we know and believe. Let us like Bartimaeus be firm in the
trust we have in the redeeming and healing power of Jesus
when we call on him to have mercy on us.

Could you not watch one hour with me?
If you would like to spend one hour every week to keep
Jesus company in the Blessed Sacrament,
please call us and let us know when can you
come to the Parish Center. Our office is
open between 8:30 am to 6:30 pm Monday
thru Thursday. Perpetual adoration would
not be possible without your help and be
assured that God will bless you and your
loved ones. Jesus waits for our little Acts of
faith, adoration, love, thanksgiving, repentance, reparation and charity that we can
offer Him as we contemplate - His Divine Majesty - in
the Blessed Sacrament.
Let us help you schedule your own personal hour to be
with Jesus, to rest in His peace.
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Beginning on December 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and to
conclude on November 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King, the church will celebrate an extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. During Jubilee years, Catholics have the opportunity to seek out special indulgences and confessors are
given special faculties. Pope Francis announced a Jubilee Year to give Catholic the opportunity to reflect on
God’s mercy for all his children. Pope Francis has
asked that every diocese designate a Door of Mercy at
their cathedral church to welcome pilgrims. Their entrance through the door will be a sign of their sorrow
and their resolve to live a life of faith.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
DID YOU KNOW?
Trick-or-treat safely
Halloween is a great night to go out,
dress up, have fun, and eat treats.
Halloween is also an important time
to go over safety rules. Tell your kids to stay with the
adults when they’re trick-or-treating, and to keep with
the group when they go up to neighbors’ doors. If you
are the adult responsible for the group, make sure you
know exactly who is in your group, and what they’re
wearing. For more Halloween safety tips, visit http://

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
decídete a seguirlo a Él.
