House of the Poor
Missionary Work
Deacon Al Scaduto and I are in Kampala, Uganda, this week visiting Fr.
Achilles. For those who are new to
the parish, Fr. Achilles is a diocesan
priest in Kampala who has been visiting St. Edward Church in the summer
on-and-off for the last seven years. Parishioners have
contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Fr. Achilles who has used this money to build and support various
schools and health clinics, among other ministries to the
poor. Deacon Al and I will also be visiting the Missionaries of the Poor and Fr. Achilles as an expression of support and solidarity. In addition, the trip is meant to help
us develop a long-term strategic plan for our missionary
work so that our contributions are being used as efficiently as possible and in a way that fosters systemic
change as well as immediate help.
Taking Care of our Neighborhood
Our call to serve Christ in the poor always starts at
home. The parish continues to offer ongoing opportunities for parishioners to serve those in need here in our
own neighborhood. In the October 25th bulletin you
read about what we did in the month of October. On
November 7th and 8th, we donated an incredible amount
of clothing and home goods in our St. Vincent de Paul
Bundle Sunday collection. The shoes that were donated
are going to the Lights On Ministry which serves those
who are being released from the Orange County Jail in
Santa Ana in the middle of night.
On the second Saturday of each month several parishioners gather at Family Assistance Ministries in San Clemente to help pack and distribute food to the poor in our
neighborhood. At the 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Mass, the entire collection will go to our Christian Service and the St.
Vincent de Paul Ministries who serve the poor three days
a week from our food bank in Knight Hall. Meanwhile a
newly-formed Outreach Committee continues to explore
ways to improve and increase our charitable giving. Jesus
taught us that “the greatest among you will be the servant of all”. (Mt 23:11). We’re working towards greatness.
Casa de los Podres
Trabajo misionero
nuestras donaciones caritativas. Jesús nos enseñó que "el
mayor entre vosotros será siervo de todos". (Mt 23:11).
Estamos trabajando hacia la grandeza.
These are just a few of things that we are doing to serve
Christ at home and abroad. With the Season of Advent
beginning next week you can be sure there will be many
opportunities to grow more deeply into a House of Prayer and House of the Poor.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Brendan Manson

Celebrating an anniversary or
other special occasion, remembering a loved one, or just want
a way to make our church more
beautiful?
Please consider sponsoring
a flower arrangement in the
Sanctuary. There are will be
two bouquets placed on the pedestals in the sanctuary
for weekend masses. We have made arrangements
with a local florist, McCool Flowers to have the bouquets delivered weekly to the church. Bouquets can
be sponsored for $60 each and we will acknowledge
your donation in the bulletin. Please go to the church
office to reserve your date and make payment for the
flowers and we will do the rest!
Please do not contact McCool’s directly as they do not
keep a record of who reserved each weekend.

Help the Homeless
Wounded Warrior Dinner Thank You.
Welcome Inn
I want to personally thank everyone that braved
the hottest day of the year, and supported the
Wounded Warriors’ fundraising dinner event
held on October 10 in Knight Hall. We had a
smaller attendance this year but everyone enjoyed the great Italian food and fun evening.
Clothing & Sleeping Bag Drive
After Masses on December 12 & 13
The homeless are just that. They wear the same
clothes day and night and carry their possession with
them. With cold weather upon us, they need washable sleeping bags and lightweight fleece throws. The
homeless in our area - who are predominately men
—need warm outdoor jackets, preferably weather-proof, that
are large enough to accommodate multiple layers
of clothing underneath. (No dress jackets or
coats, please!) The men also need: sweatshirts,
long-sleeve shirts, socks (L), gloves, knit scarves,
and hooded plastic ponchos.
WELCOME INN volunteers will collect these items
after Masses on December 12 & 13
Thanks to all of the Knights of Columbus that
helped to make this event possible, from selling
tickets with me after each mass, setting up and
decorating the hall, cooking and serving the
food, etc. Thank you all for your help. I greatly
appreciate it.
Thank you, Fr. Brendan and your staff for
allowing us to have this fundraising event
again this year.

Brighten the Holidays for Someone Less Fortunate
Here are three simple ways that you and your family can share the joy of Christmas
with a local poor person or family.
1. Adopt-a-Family. If you are willing to provide food and gifts for a family this Christmas,
please select an envelope from the Christmas tree which will be in the vestibule of the
church on November 29th. On the front of each envelope will be the number of members
in the family listed inside. Instructions and information about the family you selected are
also inside the envelope.
2. Donate a gift card. Give joy anonymously to someone in need by donating a gift card
for food (grocery stores like Ralphs or Albertsons) or for clothing or necessities (Walmart,
Target, CVS). Put your gift card in the Christian Service Gift Box in the St. Edward Parish
Office by Tuesday, December 15th.
3. Donate a toy. Help bring joy to a child! Please leave an unwrapped new or hand-crafted toy
in the decorated box in the vestibule of the church by Tuesday, December15th.
May God Bless You
