Every time I walk by our newly-roofed buildings, I am grateful to God for the great spirit of cooperation and teamwork that brought this project to completion, and in a relatively short span of time! Thank you to so many who gave of their time, talent, and treasure! Trusting in God’s goodness is so important in our everyday lives as it is in our parish life. By working together, our beautiful group of parish volunteers, professional roofers, and members of our parish staff were able to see the roofs complete at about half the cost of bidding this project to outside companies! God provided good weather for the days of work, which started at the beginning of July and ended at the beginning of August. What a great blessing! The initial project of re-roofing the three main interconnected structures of our parish, namely the Church roof, the Elementary Wing roof, and the Middle School roof, involved some additional expenses, bringing the final cost to $7,329 more than the estimated $60,000. Partly due to the low number of volunteer roofers we were forced to hire contractors in order to complete the project in a timely manner. As you can also see below, we took advantage of the great cooperation of the volunteer and roofer crews to re-roof the two garages on our campus as well: namely, the Parish Office Garage/Storage as well as the We Care Food Pantry/Rectory Garage. These two garage structures were just as much in need of new roofs as the main project. As of today, we have collected from parishioners, individuals, various organizations and groups, and other members of our Romeoville-area community $61,755.51. The total cost of the Main Project and the two Garage structures comes to $77,129.27. So in order to meet all the expenses, we are still in need of $15,373.76 St Andrews Project 2: We Care Food Pantry / Rectory Garage Roof Material Expense $3,900.00 Sub Contractor Expense $2,340.00 Waste Disposal Total Project 2 St Andrews Project 3: Parish Office Garage/Storage Roof $600.00 $6,840.00 Material Expense Sub Contractors Expense Waste Disposal Total Project 3 $1,800.00 $860.00 $300.00 $2,960.00 THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU who have been so generous with your donations and your time! The ministry of permanent deacons has become an essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost. The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint. Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long‑delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve. —Rev.
