Notes From the Pastor’s Desk
Twenty-nineth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In today's Gospel Jesus and the religious leaders in Jerusalem continue their tense exchange of
questions and challenges and they try to entrap Jesus by their question about the payment of taxes.
Matthew sets up an unusual partnership between the Pharisees and the Herodians. The Herodians
were supporters of Herod Antipas, a Jewish political leader who collaborated with the Romans. Such collaboration would
have required a compromised observance of the Mosaic Law. The Pharisees, on the other hand, taught scrupulous observance of the Mosaic Law and opposed Roman occupation. Herodians favored the payment of taxes; the Pharisees opposed
it. The Herodians and the Pharisees approach Jesus, asking that he take sides in their dispute. If Jesus answers with the
Pharisees, he shows himself to be an enemy of Rome. If he answers with the Herodians, he offends popular Jewish religious sensibilities.
Jesus' response to this attempt to trap him exposes the guile of his questioners. From his first words to them, Jesus
shows that he is very much aware of what they are trying to do. He asks to see a Roman coin, which is readily provided to
him. It may have come from the hand of a Herodian, but the Pharisees show themselves to be quite willing to accept this
compromise. Jesus has already exposed the Pharisees as hypocrites.
Jesus takes his response one step further. He asks that his questioners examine the coin. Agreeing that it is Caesar's
image on the coin, Jesus tells them that it must belong to Caesar. Avoiding the question of lawfulness altogether, Jesus
answers their question with simple logic. Then, going further still, Jesus tells them that their obligation is to pay to God that
which belongs to God.
Jesus' response to the Herodians and Pharisees suggests the ethic that Christians ought to adopt. It reminds us of the
importance of keeping things in their proper perspective. Do we attach ourselves to worldly things at the expense of the
love and honor that we owe to God?
Fr. Matteo
P. Matteo
29º Domingo do Tempo Comum
prontamente fornecida a ele.

ADULT
EDUCATION
The Adult Education
Program is held Tuesdays at
7:30 pm in the church and
repeated Wednesday at
10:30 am in the Church. The
better we understand Jesus,
the better we understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this itinerant preacher whom
many called the Messiah? In Priest, Prophet, King,
you’ll discover Jesus as the Anointed One - the ultimate
priest, prophet, and king foreshadowed throughout the
Hebrew Scriptures. Using biblical insights and engaging
stories, Father Barron affirms that we see Jesus most
clearly through the lens of the Old Testament.
Through this presentation of Priest, Prophet, King,
you will better understand Jesus, become more familiar
with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic,
and kingly mission.

SEÑOR DE LOS MILAGROS
Señor de los Milagros
de Nazarenas is an image
painted of Jesus Christ that
is venerated in Lima, Peru.
The image was painted during the 17th century by an
unnamed African taken
from Angola to Peru as a
slave. It is the main Catholic festivity in Peru and one
of the largest processions
around the world.
Christ is shown enduring the pain of crucifixion.
Above the cross is the Holy Spirit and God the Father. Below and to the right of Jesus is his mother,
the Virgin Mary with her heart pierced by a metaphorical sword of sorrow and to her right at the foot
of the cross is St. Mary Magdalene.
Every year, in October, hundreds of thousands
of faithful from all races and economic backgrounds
celebrate the Lord of Miracles in a religious procession through the streets of Lima. The boulevards are
dressed in purple on October 18, 19, and 28 to celebrate the Lord of Miracles.
Its name originated in a massive earthquake in
the 18th century, which destroyed most of the city
miraculously leaving only that mural standing.

W ORLD M ISSION S UNDAY
This weekend our parish celebrates World Mission
Sunday. This year we are invited to reach out and help
build the Church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest
Catholic Church, as well as local churches throughout
the Missions, in the most remote areas across our world.
Through the work of these churches, and their witness to
Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience
God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep
the Missions in your daily prayers. Please give generously in the collection for the Society for the Propagation
of the Faith. For more information, please visit:

Please note that Fingerprinting scheduled for October 20 has been cancelled due to lack of participation.
Earlier messages clearly stated that the Archdiocese
required a minimum of 25 participants in order to send
their people and equipment to St. Vincent. We fell short
of that number.
However, the people who registered for fingerprinting can still have their prints taken, at no cost to them, by
registering on line as follows:
Employees: FPAOMParishEmp
Volunteers: FPAOMParishVol
After registering on line, call: 954-278-9005 to
schedule an appointment to be fingerprinted. This facility is approved by the Archdiocese.
The facility is located at 3200 NW 62 Ave., Margate, Fl., in Margate Plaza. It is called Coral Landings

Lord Jesus, Savior of the world and King of Peace, watch
over our sons and daughters in the service of their country.
Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military
life. Keep them close to You and help them live the Commandments. Lord Jesus, give them courage to serve their country with honor and dignity. Be with them when they are in
danger; strengthen them when they face hardships. Above all
Lord, grant that when their service is finished they may return
to us, sound in mind, body and soul. Amen.

MISSÃO PARA LIBERTAR
Neste penúltimo domingo do mês de
outubro celebramos o Dia Mundial das
Missões. Neste ano, o tema da
Campanha Missionária é: “Missão
para libertar” e o lema: “Enviou-me a
proclamar a libertação...” (Lc 4,18).
Anunciar a Boa Notícia do Evangelho é
Anunciar a Boa Notícia do Evangelho
