Solemnity of the Assumption
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
As a reminder, this year the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is NOT a holy day of
obligation, owing to the 1992 decision of the USCCB abrogating the precept to attend Mass when August
15 falls on a Saturday or Monday. For that reason we will celebrate her Feast Day Mass on Friday with a
vigil Mass at 6:00 PM in English and a 7:00 PM Mass in Spanish. Saturday the 15th will be on its regular
Schedule. SATURDAY EVENING, THE VIGIL MASS WILL BE THE ONE FOR THE TWENTIETH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME, MASS THAT WILL FULFILL THE SUNDAY OBLIGATION.

“EVANGELII GAUDIUM”
214. Precisely because this involves the internal
consistency of our message about the value of the
human person, the Church cannot be expected to
change her position on this question. I want to be
completely honest in this regard. This is not something
subject to alleged reforms or “modernizations”. It is not
“progressive” to try to resolve problems by eliminating a
human life. On the other hand, it is also true that we
have done little to adequately accompany women in
very difficult situations, where abortion appears as a
quick solution to their profound anguish, especially
when the life developing within them is the result of
rape or a situation of extreme poverty. Who can remain
unmoved before such painful situations?
215. There are other weak and defenceless beings who
are frequently at the mercy of economic interests or
indiscriminate exploitation. I am speaking of creation as
a whole. We human beings are not only the beneficiaries
but also the stewards of other creatures. Thanks to our
bodies, God has joined us so closely to the world around
us that we can feel the desertification of the soil almost
as a physical ailment, and the extinction of a species as a
painful disfigurement. Let us not leave in our wake a
swath of destruction and death which will affect our
own lives and those of future generations. Here I would
make my own the touching and prophetic lament voiced
some years ago by the bishops of the Philippines: “An
incredible variety of insects lived in the forest and were
busy with all kinds of tasks… Birds flew through the air,
their bright plumes and varying calls adding color and
song to the green of the forests… God intended this land
for us, his special creatures, but not so that we might
destroy it and turn it into a wasteland… After a single
night’s rain, look at the chocolate brown rivers in your
locality and remember that they are carrying the life
blood of the land into the sea… How can fish swim in
sewers like the Pasig and so many more rivers which we
have polluted? Who has turned the wonderworld of the
seas into underwater cemeteries bereft of color and
life?”
216. Small yet strong in the love of God, like Saint
Francis of Assisi, all of us, as Christians, are called to
watch over and protect the fragile world in which we
live, and all its peoples.

con nuestro mensaje sobre el valor de la persona humana,
no debe esperarse que la Iglesia cambie su postura sobre
esta cuestión. Quiero ser completamente honesto al

una explotación indiscriminada. Me refiero al conjunto de
la creación. Los seres humanos no somos sólo
beneficiarios, sino custodios de las demás criaturas. Por
nuestros cuerpos, Dios nos ha unido tan estrechamente al
mundo que nos rodea, que la desertificación del suelo es
como una enfermedad y la extinción de una especie como
una mutilación. No dejemos a nuestro paso signos de
destrucción y de muerte que afecten nuestra vida y la de
las futuras generaciones. En este sentido, hago propio el
bello y profético lamento que hace varios años expresaron
los Obispos de Filipinas: « Una increíble variedad de
insectos vivían en el bosque y estaban ocupados con todo
tipo de tareas […] Los pájaros volaban por el aire, sus
plumas brillantes y sus diferentes cantos añadían color y
melodía al verde de los bosques [...] Dios quiso esta tierra
para nosotros, sus criaturas especiales, pero no para que
pudiéramos destruirla y convertirla en un páramo [...]
Después de una sola noche de lluvia, mira hacia los ríos de
marrón chocolate de tu localidad, y recuerda que se llevan
la sangre viva de la tierra hacia el mar [...] ¿Cómo van a
poder nadar los peces en alcantarillas como el río Pasig y
tantos otros ríos que hemos contaminado? ¿Quién ha
convertido el maravilloso mundo marino en cementerios
subacuáticos despojados de vida y de color? ».
216.Pequeños pero fuertes en el amor de Dios, como san
Francisco de Asís, todos los cristianos estamos llamados a
cuidar la fragilidad del pueblo y del mundo en que vivimos.

his wonderful presentation on Saint
Luke´s Gospel during the month of
July and August. There is no better
way to honor and remember our
patron than presenting his Gospel, an
everlasting testimony of love for Jesus
and our neighbors. We are also grateful to Fr. Gomez
for his priestly labor that deeply touches the hearts of all
the faithful.

maravillosa presentación del Evangelio según San
Lucas durante los meses de julio y agosto. No hay
forma mejor de recordar y honrar a nuestro patrón que

St. Justin, one of the early apologists, of the bread and
wine consecrated in Holy Mass, teaches: “Let us call this
food Eucharist, and no one can partake of it if he does
not believe in its truth as taught, if he has not received
the cleansing for the remission of sins and the new
birth, and if he does not live according to the precepts
of Christ” (Apol. 1, 66, 1-2). Thus, it is not a material
bread and wine, but a spiritual food whose reception
requires the satisfaction of a minimal number of moral
conditions. And what does spiritual food mean? What
are these minimal conditions? From the human
viewpoint of his contemporaries Christ appears as the
son of Joseph and Mary. The people can see no further
than the material unless they are touched by grace. But
Christ who is the Grace and the fountain of grace
touches us with his word: “I myself am the living bread
come down from heaven: whoever eats this bread will
live forever.” These words of Christ, if we have a truly
open disposition, produce in our spirit what they signify.
As our body, also our spirit needs nourishment. What
food does our spirit need? It is not the bread that Elijah
ate in the desert so that he could walk for forty days and
forty nights. No. This bread only prefigures the
Eucharist, but in the Eucharist we have therein all grace:
prayer, contemplation, sanctity. For our spirit to be
nourished with grace we have to do as St. Paul indicates:
“Get rid of all bitterness, all passion and anger, harsh
words, slander, and malice of every kind. In place of
these be kind to one another, compassionate, and
mutually forgiving, just as God has forgiven you in
Christ.” Only in this way can we live in the freedom that
grace bestows on our spirit, only in this way can we be
happy in our interior, only in this way can we experience
that peace that Christ says the world cannot give.
San Justino, uno de los padres apologetas, afirmaba del
pan y del vino consagrados en la Santa Misa: “Llamamos
a este alimento Eucaristía y nadie puede tomar parte en
él si no cree en la verdad de lo que se enseña entre
nosotros, si no ha recibido el baño para el perdón de los
pecados y el nuevo nacimiento, y si no vive según los
preceptos de Cristo” (Apol. 1, 66,1-2). No es, por tanto,
un pan y un vino material, sino un alimento espiritual
para el que se requieren unas mínimas condiciones
morales. ¿Y qué significa alimento espiritual? ¿Cuáles
son esas condiciones mínimas? Cristo aparece a la
mirada humana de sus contemporáneos como el hijo de
José y de María. La gente no puede ver más allá de lo
material si no es tocada por la gracia. Pero Cristo, que
es la Gracia y la fuente de la gracia nos toca con su
palabra: “Yo soy el pan vivo que ha bajado del cielo: el
que coma de este pan vivirá para siempre”. Estas
palabras de Cristo, si tenemos verdadera disposición,
producen en nuestro espíritu lo que significan. Como
nuestro cuerpo, también nuestro espíritu necesita
alimento. ¿Qué alimento es el que tiene que comer
nuestro espíritu? No es el pan que come Elías en el
desierto para poder caminar cuarenta días y cuarenta
noches. No. Este pan es sólo prefiguración de la
Eucaristía, pero en la Eucaristía está encerrada toda
gracia: la oración, la contemplación, la santidad. Pero
para que nuestro espíritu se alimente con la gracia
tenemos que hacer lo que nos dice San Pablo:
“desterrad de vosotros la amargura, la ira, los enfados e
insultos y toda la maldad. Sed buenos, comprensivos,
perdonándoos unos a otros como Dios os perdonó en
Cristo”. Sólo así podemos vivir la libertad que la gracia
otorga a nuestro espíritu, sólo así podremos estar
alegres en nuestro interior, sólo así podemos tener esa
paz que dice Cristo no nos la puede dar el mundo.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED
The school year just ended, however by the end of
August will be offering “Back to School” supplies to all
school aged children of needy families in our
community. Grades are from Kindergarten to High
School. We must prepared for the fall to ensured that
children in need have the opportunity to go to school
with the necessary supplies. Kindly, check the listing

Escuela” para ayudar a los niños en edad escolar de las
familias necesitadas de nuestra comunidad. Los grados son
de Kindergarten hasta secundaria (12). Nos preparamos
para el otoño para que los niños necesitados tengan la
oportunidad de ir a la escuela con los materiales necesarios.
