Dear St. Matthew’s Parishioners and Friends,
TRUST IN GOD’S LOVE
The common thread that runs through today’s readings is the
unfathomable love of God, shared by Jesus, for each one of us
during this life and into the next. As we remember our deceased
loved ones on this day of All Souls, we can find comfort in knowing
that “by giving up his own Son for our sins, God’s plan for us is one
of benevolent love.” (CCC604) Through Christ’s sacrifice, death is
not the end. Though not visible, the dead are ever-present in our
joys and our sorrows, and we help them through our prayers.
According to the Catechism, “Hope is expressed and nurtured in
prayer.” (CCC 1820) Although we may be disheartened when we
do not receive the result we prayed for and suffer loss, that is not
a time to stop praying. We are assured in Scripture that our
prayers make a difference for the holy souls. (CCC1032) It is
through our prayers, the offering of the sacrifice of the Mass and
of the Holy Eucharist, that the holy souls are drawn closer to God,
are able to rejoice in the “great happiness of a glimpse of God”
and are granted “clemency” and “relief.” (Saint Catherine of Genoa,
Saint Augustine, Magnificat, Nov. 2013, p.42)
In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that we are united to him by
the love of the Father. When we receive Holy Communion, we
receive Jesus who is truly and really (Continued on page 2)

Dear St. Matthew’s Parishioners and Friends,
Queridos Parroquianos y Amigos de St. Matthew,
(cont’d )
Confía en el amor de Dios
Present body, blood, soul and divinity. If our hearts
are open and we are properly disposed, we may
draw closer to Jesus and live in greater love and unity with him and our brothers and sisters in Christ.
God does not want to lose us. He wants us to know
that we, as well as our beloved dead, are held in his
hand. He knows our needs and pours out his blessings
in many ways. And we never know when we may
receive such a blessing. A Woman, who had been
widowed a few months earlier, had just finished her
confession with a priest when, after giving the blessing, he said to her, “ Why don’t you ever ask your
husband to pray for you? You don’t speak to him
enough. He is waiting for you just outside the door.
Say hello to him for me.” Surprised at the words, the
woman left and was overcome with a great consolation that has never left her heart.
Let us remember the souls of the faithful departed in prayer, not just today, but every day.

All Saints Day, which the Roman Catholic Church refers to as
"the Solemnity of All Saints" or "All Hallows" (shortened to
"All Saints"), is celebrated on November 1 in honor of all of the
saints, both known and unknown.
All Souls Day, observed on November 2, commemorates the faithful departed. Our Roman Catholic Church doctrine holds that the souls
of the faithful departed, who at death have not been cleansed by
temporal punishment due to sin, cannot immediately come to heaven.
They may be helped to attain a place in heaven by our prayers and
by the sacrifice of the Mass. The Church officially calls this day.
"The Commemoration of All of the Faithful Departed."
Another well-known name for this day is the "Feast of All
Souls" and in other languages as "Day of the Dead" or "Dia
de los Muertos," and it may fall on a day other than November 2.
The western celebration on Nov. 2 of All Souls Day,
follows All Saints Day on Nov. 1, which commemorates
the faithful departed who have attained the beatific vision in
heaven. We, at St. Matthew Church, pray for our departed family members, friends and parishioners, as we use our blue All
Souls offertory envelopes.
May the Souls of our Faithful Departed rest in Peace.
(CIC 604) A
Génova, San Agustín, Magnificat, No. 2013, p.42)
nuestros corazones y estamos bien dispuestos, podemos
suficiente. Él te esta
esperando afuera de la
puerta. Dile hola por mí.”
Sorprendida por esas
palabras, la mujer se alejó
y tuvo un gran consuelo que
siempre llevó en su corazón.
Recordemos las almas de los
fieles difuntos en la oración,
no solo hoy, sino todos los
días.

Commemoration of All
the Faithful Departed
All Souls Day on November 2 is a day when
we pray for deceased
souls. These prayers may
be general in nature or
they may involve specific
members of our families
and our faith communities,
including perhaps physically visiting the graves
of our family members.
On All Souls Day, we
acknowledge the presence of those who have
departed this life. Today
we recognize and honor
them to an even greater
extent. To practice stewardship completely we
need to be aware of our
personal families and our
faith families. Just prior
to today's Gospel reading, Jesus reminds us that
"I am the bread of life."
Seven times in Holy Scripture Jesus states, "I am ..."
followed by various
statements which allow us
to grasp more fully what
He is and what He has
done for us.
Bread is considered
one of the essentials for
"life." Jesus is reminding
us that He is about
"eternal life." It is that
hope which allows us to
trust in Him by living
stewardship. This past
June at Mass, Pope Francis said, "He Himself is the
living bread that gives
life to the world." Let us
embrace that hope.

Nocturnal Adoration
Eucharistic Adoration is an expression of our
love for Jesus, who loves us so much that He
never wants to leave us and so stays with us day
and night in the Blessed Sacrament. For He
says: "Behold I am with you always," because "I
have loved you with an everlasting love. And
constant is my affection for you," (Mt 28:20; Jer 31:3).
Please look into your hearts and try to make
some time to come to adore Jesus in the
Eucharist.
Jesus "waits for us in this Sacrament of Love,"
where He appeals to each one of us:
"Could you not watch one hour with me?,"
(Mt. 6:40).
The Nocturnal Adoration Society will have its
monthly Eucharistic Adoration hour this
coming Saturday, November 8th.
All are invited!!!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE
Each Sunday our Christian hospitality is immediately
challenged as we enter and leave the parking lot. Our first
concern must be our neighbors, not to park in ways that
block their entrance or exit, not to park illegally, especially
to leave space for emergency vehicles to come up Notre
Dame Avenue and to be courteous to all neighbors and
fellow church-goers.
AVISO IMPORTANTE
Avenida Notre Dame. Seamos corteses con los vecinos y
nuestros compañeros parroquianos.

Ministry Trainings
Recently members of our
parish attended Eucharistic
Minister and Lector (more
correctly known as
"Readers") trainings in Belmont, which was sponsored
by our SF Archdiocese.
Starting off, we had a wonderful talk about "The Eucharist as the Action of
the Community." by Rev.
David M. Pettingill. He explained how the Word creates faith and community,
and prepares us for the Eucharist. After his talk, the
EMs and Readers took their
separate trainings. The following weekend, the readers practiced and the EMS
learned how to minister to
the sick and homebound.
Parishioners Carmen
Bengsstrom, Joan
Claybrook, Terry Culloty,
Dana Jow and Rick Leon
all were trained as Readers.
Wendy Amort, Margaret
Chew, Caridad Komp, Tony Villanueva, and I were
all trained as Eucharistic
Ministers. Joe Ghanem
(EM) and Paula Knutsen
(Reader) will take the same
trainings at St. Elizabeth's
in San Francisco on Nov. 8
and 15. If you would like to
join as a reader or EM,
please contact me soon, so
we can sign you up for the
November trainings.
We are in need of both
more readers and Eucharistic Ministers.
