SAINT MARY’S AND SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISHES
Parroquias de Santa María y San Carlos Borromeo
August 30, 2015 / 30 d e Ago sto d e 2015
You enter this church… not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. He is your heavenly Father. Come, then, with joy in
your heart and thanks on your lips into His presence, offering Him your love and service. Be grateful to the strong and
loyal ones who, in the name of Jesus Christ, built this place of worship, and to all who have beautified it and hallowed it
with their prayers and praise. Ask His blessing on those who love His house of faith as the inspiration of their labor,
rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit, and may that blessing rest on you, both on your going out and your coming in.
Vigésimo Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
I received a flyer from RETROUVAILLE of New England
inviting married couples to attend one of their upcoming
weekends. Retrouvaille is a ministry sponsored by the Catholic
Church for married couples who are experiencing difficulties in
their marriages. (Remember that there is nothing wrong with
couples experiencing difficulties… rather it is through tension
and strains that we can discover how to be renewed and grow in
love.) I have been inspired by married couples who have
attended this weekend. One couple told me that they weren’t at a
crisis point but they still thought they needed help to regain that
spark. Please see the announcement below and contact them at
800-470-2230 or visit www.HelpOurMarriage.com to register or
receive more information.
– Father Michael
STRUGGLING IN YOUR MARRIAGE?
You are not alone! If your marriage is tearing the two of you
apart, if there is little or no meaningful communication, if you
are considering separation or divorce, we believe Retrouvaille
can help. Our peer ministry is led by couples who have lived
through the honeymoon phase often followed by deep
disillusionment before finally finding resurrection in their
marriages using the tools taught in this program. Rediscover a
loving marriage with a Retrouvaille weekend. The upcoming
New England marriage renewal weekends will be held on
September 11-13, 2015, and on the following dates in 2016:
January 8-10, April 8-10, Sep 16-18. To register for the weekend
or for more information, visit www.HelpOurMarriage.com or
call 1-800-470-2230.
CATHOLIC HEALTH INITIATIVES FOR UGANDA
Dear Friends and Supporters of Catholic Health Initiatives for
Uganda (CHIU),
Allow me to take this opportunity to heartily thank all those
who came over last Saturday for the fundraising dinner that we
had at St. Mary’s Hall. I would like also to thank all of you who
for some reasons were not able to attend, but still sent us your
donations and messages of support to this health cause. Thank
you very much all of you!
Compared to last year where at the end of the fundraiser we
had raised close to $ 9,000.00, this year by the end of our
fundraiser we had received slightly above $ 20,000.00.
Thank you very much for trusting us, and we shall do all that
we can to ensure that this money is put to its intended use. We
would like also to thank all the service providers for the event
last Saturday and also all those who donated their resources, time
and all the items we used for our auctions that made that day
memorable! May God bless you all Abundantly!

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (ASP) BEGINS
The start of the school year and the After School Program is
upon us. The first day of ASP is Tuesday, September 8. We
encourage all parents to re-register their children or register them
for the first time. Please spread the word to parents of children
throughout Waltham. The children benefit greatly and they need
to be helped and watched in the after school hours. We also hope
that our dedicated team of volunteers is able to return. Please
know that we are always looking for new volunteers to commit
one hour a week helping the children. The commitment is on any
weekday from 3:45-5:00 p.m. We are happy to welcome new
directors to the program – Charles Smith and Jackie Tabingwa.
They have been working hard preparing for September. They
will be assisted by Kateri Thekaekara. Susan Brennan will
continue to be the volunteer coordinator. Please call the After
School phone number 781-577-2262 to register your child. And
please pray for a successful start to our fourth year.
CATECHETICAL FOCUS FOR ASP
Pope Francis has dedicated the coming year to Mercy. The
opening day of this Holy Year of Mercy is December 8th, the
Feast of the Immaculate Conception and our own parish feast
day. The children in the After School Program will be learning
and performing the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy
throughout the coming year. They will also become ambassadors
of Mercy by learning the life of St. Francis. One of their projects
is already in the works. Each Spring, the children plant the
garden but they are not in session when it is time to harvest what
they planted. So we have planted a new crop of lettuce, kale,
swiss chard and radishes – all plants that withstand the early
autumn months. The children will harvest the food when ready
and donate it to a local shelter that has also started a garden
program for their clients. The goal is to teach the children the
first corporal work of Mercy – to feed the hungry.
REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Registration for religious education classes is taking place in the
Rel. Ed. building on Monday-Wednesday from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Call Nilvia Hernandez at 781-308-4961 for an appointment. If
the student was not baptized at Saint Mary’s or Saint Charles,
please obtain a Baptismal Certificate from the church of baptism.
ON THE BULLETIN COVER
In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human
precepts. You disregard God’s commandment but cling to
human tradition. Mark 7:7-9
In today’s gospel, Jesus tells the Pharisees not to put their
primary focus on rituals, but to focus on God’s commandment.
This 6th century mosaic is in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in
Classe, Ravenna Italy. It depicts the hand of God reaching from
the heavens.

SAINT MARY PARISH
SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
We encourage everyone to continue reading the Acts of the
Apostles this week …
ACTS OF THE APOSTLES – CHAPTER 24 PART 3
Captivity in Caesarea. Several days later Felix came with his
wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He had Paul summoned and
listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. But as he spoke
about righteousness and self-restraint and the coming judgment,
Felix became frightened and said, “You may go for now; when I
find an opportunity I shall summon you again.” At the same time
he hoped that a bribe would be offered him by Paul, and so he
sent for him very often and conversed with him.
Two years passed and Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus.
Wishing to ingratiate himself with the Jews, Felix left Paul in
prison.
Q & A – LITURGY & SACRAMENTS
We continue with our “Question & Answer” series about Liturgy
and the Sacraments. The text is taken from the Compendium of
the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
The Sacrament of Baptism...
264. What is the meaning of the Christian name received at
Baptism?
The name is important because God knows each of us by name,
that is, in our uniqueness as persons. In Baptism a Christian
receives his or her own name in the Church. It should preferably
be the name of a saint who might offer the baptized a model of
sanctity and an assurance of his or her intercession before God.
WELCOME FATHER VERRILL
Each year, every parish in the Archdiocese is assigned a visitor
from the Missions through the Propagation of Faith Office. This
year, Father Verrill was assigned to come to St. Mary’s as a
former member of the Saint James Society. We are very happy to
have Fr Wendell back to St. Mary’s next weekend. The Saint
James Society was started by Cardinal Cushing in response to
Pope John XXIII call the faithful to go out and bring Christ to all
the world. For over 50 years, Boston priests and priests from
other dioceses around the world have ministered to the people in
parishes throughout Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. Fr. Wendell will
celebrate the 4:00 p.m. Saturday, 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Masses on Sunday. He will also preach and speak at the 8:00
a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Masses. There will be a second collection for
the Missions even though there is not an envelope for it. Thanks
for always being generous to our brothers and sisters in the
mission territories.
CONCERT ON THE LAWN AT ST. MARY’S
Dick Donovan’s Big Band under the direction of Steve Taddeo
will perform at St. Mary’s on Wednesday, September 16 from

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
On September 9, the Church celebrates the feast of Blessed
Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul. Frederic heard the call of Jesus to love and serve those who
are suffering. And in the poor he found the face of Christ.
In your heart, you also will find the “face of Christ” as you place
your offering to the poor in the St Vincent de Paul Poor Boxes at
the doors as you leave church today.
Frederic Ozanam, apostle of charity, advocate of the dignity of
the human person, and disciple of St. Vincent De Paul, pray for
us. Amen.
ANNUAL CORI FORMS
It is that time of year when we ask all volunteers and ministers to
fill out the CORI FORM. This is the annual criminal record
check required by the Archdiocese for paid staff and anyone who
performs any service at parishes. The forms can be filled out in
the Sacristy. Please have a paid staff member check the form and
sign it.

SAINT CHARLES PARISH
PARISH UPKEEP – MAINTENANCE
If you notice anything that is amiss or needs repair, we ask you
to send an email to [email protected] or call and
leave a message about the issue on the St. Charles phone line
(781-893-0330). It is a big place to keep watch over and the
more eyes the better in maintaining our property. We will try to
follow up on the request as soon as possible.
NEW BULLETIN FORMAT RESPONSE/ REMINDER
Many thanks for your responses to the new bulletin format. We
hope it is readable. Please remember that anything written in
either the St. Mary’s or St. Charles sections of the bulletin is for
the parishioners of both parishes. For example, if you are a
member of St. Charles Parish but want to take part in something
listed in the St. Mary’s section of the bulletin, please know that
you are invited and welcome….and vice versa for St. Mary’s
parishioners. The days when you can’t cross parish lines and
attend another parish are long gone.
CORI FORM RENEWALS
It is time for the annual CORI check for all ministers and
volunteers in the parish. This is a requirement of the Archdiocese
to fulfill its commitment to protecting children. All communion
ministers, lectors, ushers and parish volunteers need to fill out a
CORI every year. There are forms in the sacristy. Please fill
them out completely or they get rejected by the processing office
in Braintree. Please have a parish employee, Fr. Agustín, Fr.
Michael, Larry or Maria sign the form after you show a picture
ID. The forms can be left in the sacristy and will be sent to the
Archdiocese. Thanks for your cooperation.
PARISH COUNCIL/FINANCE COUNCIL
We have received some nominations for new council members.
We still need more. These people will be contacted after Labor
Day. We have also received some responses from current
Council members as to whether they wish to continue or retire.
We need to know from all the current members if you wish to
continue.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BLUE MASS
The Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Parish would like to
invite you to a Blue Mass to honor and celebrate the first responders in our community – police, fire, ambulance, college
security, and other law enforcement professionals. Mass will be
on Saturday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart
Church, 311 River Street in Waltham.
PAPAL VISIT– CHALLENGES
Some parishioners have asked about going to Philadelphia to see the Pope. It has been a challenge organizing this trip due to the timing
of the Papal Mass and the travel restrictions for that weekend. It has also been difficult reserving hotel rooms because most were
reserved a few years ago when it was announced that the pope would attend the World Congress of Families. To get to Philadelphia
from Boston you need to leave on Friday because many of the roads will be closed Friday evening. The traffic into Philadelphia on
Saturday will be terrible. Transportation into the center of the city will be very limited on Saturday and Sunday. This means people will
have to walk long distances. The Papal Mass on Sunday starts at 4 p.m. This means people will not be getting back to their
transportation for many hours. The laws require that bus drivers sleep for a certain amount of hours before driving which means some
buses cannot leave until Monday morning. All of this has made planning difficult. People who do want to go cannot always get time
off or be away from school for four days. Added to this is the unpredictability of the weather– it could rain or still be quite hot. To
organize a trip for everyone in the parish under these conditions is almost impossible. We are still trying to organize a smaller trip for
the youth of the parish. A parish in Philadelphia has agreed to allow us to sleep on the floor of their parish hall. I For once, I
recommend you turn on your televisions that weekend.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

he mencionado.
