To the Menlo-Atherton
Community
We are pleased to share the great things that
are happening at M-A as the fourth quarter
has begun. Our long awaited Spring Break is
on the horizon! March and April have been
busy with many accomplishments and a tremendous number of activities.
Teen Sleep in Action
Our teen sleep program is in motion. At the end of February, Stanford students presented to all of our 9th grade students in World Studies classes the
importance of sleep. We sponsored a slogan contest to promote better sleep
among teens, and 9th grade student Zoe Schacter-Brodie was the winner with
her slogan, “Life is lousy when you’re drowsy.” Congratulations to Zoe! Furthermore, in early March our junior teen sleep ambassadors visited the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center and were interviewed by KGO-TV (channel 7)
during their field trip. One of the ambassadors was connected to EEG electrodes, which monitored her brain wave activity for everyone to see. The
segment aired on KGO on April 7 in the evening newscast. The ambassadors also created a flyer on drowsy driving, which has been shared on School
Loop and posted in the front office. Thanks to Maggie Betsock, tireless volunteer, for her work on coordinating all of the sleep activities.
Carnegie Hall Apperance
On Saturday, April 4, the Menlo-Atherton Orchestra, led by music teacher
Kent Kurrus, had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at New York
City’s Carnegie Hall—the most celebrated concert hall in the nation—with
the best of the best high school bands and orchestras from around the country and Canada. Earned by winning the Festival of Gold competition in Chicago last spring, the Orchestra was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall. All
51 students had the thrill of flying to New York (along with many parents,
families, and friends) for this experience. The orchestra rose to the occasion,
playing three pieces magnificently in front of an enthusiastic audience whose
goosebumps, tears, and applause celebrated the M-A stars. Many of the
world's top musicians never have the opportunity to play in Carnegie Hall;
for our M-A orchestra not only to win the opportunity, but to turn in a flawless performance, was a thrill. If you see members of the orchestra and Mr.
Kurrus, congratulate them heartily.

Enhorabuena Zoe! A
fabuloso director Miki Cristerna.

Senior Awards Night: Honoring Outstanding Achievements
The annual M-A Senior Awards Night will be held on Tuesday, June 2, at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center.
During this inspirational evening sponsored by the M-A PTA, many hardworking and talented seniors (and a smaller number of juniors) are honored for outstanding academic and extracurricular performance as well as service to
the school and community. Some of the awards will be a surprise, while many will be recognition for awards already
received. Students will be recognized for a wide variety of scholarships, prizes, and commendations awarded by
school and community groups. Last year, more than two hundred individuals were recognized. Invitations will be
mailed to families of students who will be receiving recognition. Awards to junior students will be presented early in
the program (so juniors can go home to study for finals!), followed by senior awards. Refreshments will be served.
Congratulations to the deserving recipients!

The Creative Self-Expression Show 2015
20 Years of Community Support!
The Great Frame Up in Menlo Park adopted Menlo Atherton High School’s Art Department in 1995 and supports us in many ways throughout the school year. Each spring, The Great Frame Up sponsors our annual student art show and competition called “The Creative Self-Expression Show.”
We are the only school involved in the show, and we are very proud of our association with The Great Frame
Up and its owner, Marcy Magatelli. She furnishes frames—FREE—for each student’s 2-dimensional artwork
and cash prizes for the “best” artworks in 2-D and 3-D in the categories of beginning, intermediate, and advanced artist (that’s up to SIX different categories!). First place winners in each category will receive $100, and
second place in each category will receive $50. This is all at no cost to the student or to M-A!
A reception for the artists and their families will take place on Thursday, May 2 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Mona
Klein’s Foods & Nutrition students cater our reception, and the food is always GREAT! Category awards will
be made at this reception. Please join us then, or stop by The Great Frame Up any day during their business
hours.
Art Show Dates: May 18 - May 31
Reception Night: May 21, 6:30-7:30 pm

Athletic Boosters
What a Year for Menlo-Atherton Sports!
To add to the accomplishments of our fall and winter athletes, this spring has seen the successful inaugural season of our boys’ volleyball team, as well as successful campaigns by our boys’ varsity swimming, girls’ varsity
and JV swimming, and boys’ varsity tennis teams, who are all in position to win league.
We have said it before, but it “bears” repeating. Our Bears have REPresented!
Boys Volleyball at M-A? YES!!!!!!
Thanks to the unrelenting efforts of Vicki Knapp and the financial support of Boosters this spring, M-A is fielding varsity and JV boys’ volleyball teams! The boys have been doing well in their first season with varsity one
match from a .500 season. Thanks to the efforts of Vicki, the teams have 15 matches scheduled. M-A looks
forward to a future when there are enough high school teams that boys’ volleyball becomes part of the Peninsula Athletic League. Thank you, Vicki!
Do you shop at Amazon.com?
If you go to www.smile.amazon.com, you can sign into your account as usual, but you may choose to have Amazon.com donate a small percentage of your purchase to Menlo-Atherton Athletic Boosters! Thank you for your
continued support!

M-A Parent Education Series
“Helping Young Athletes Reach Their Potential:
What Does Research Tell Us?”
In its final offering of the 2014-15 season, the M-A Parent Education Series offers “Helping Young Athletes
Reach Their Potential: What Does Research Tell us?” with Steve Smith, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and professor in the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium of Palo Alto University.
How can parents support their children toward healthy participation in sports to facilitate a lifelong healthy lifestyle and to reach their potential? The balance between sports, academics, arts, and downtime can be challenging as families work to find what experiences will best prepare their children for the future. In this workshop,
Dr. Smith reviews current research (including his own original studies) and provides guidelines for parents and
coaches to consider for healthy sport participation.
Prior to joining the faculty at Palo Alto University, Steve Smith served as the consulting psychologist for the
Division I Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at UC Santa Barbara. He maintains a private practice, Sport
Psychology and Research Center (www.sparccal.com), where he works with school, club, and professional teams
and athletes of all ages from across the nation.
