ANOINTING OF THE SICK
The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only
who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the
faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age,
the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly
already arrived. (CCC 1514)
If a person is in need of Anointing of the Sick, please call the
parish office for a priest at 602-242-1300.
If the parish office is closed and there is an immediate danger
of death, please call the after-hours emergency number at
602-246-3534. The after-hours number may only be used for life
and death emergencies.

YEAR OF MERCY
Opening of the Holy Doors
December 13th at 3:00pm
His Excellency, the Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix along with the Very Reverend
Fr. John Lankeit, Rector of SS. Simon and Jude Cathedral, would like to invite all priests, deacons, religious,
and faithful of the diocese to the Cathedral for the opening Mass for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy.
Schedule of Events



The Rite of the Opening of the Door of Mercy will begin in the Our Lady of
Loreto Center (Gym) at SS. Simon and Jude School.
Bishop will then lead us in a two block procession along Maryland and 27th
Avenue leading to the Doors of Mercy. Bishop will pause to officially open the
holy doors. Led by our chief shepherd the procession will continue through these
doors.
Holy Mass will open for this Year of Mercy in which Pope Francis has exhorted
each of us to “Be Merciful like the Father”. Music for the Mass will be provided
by the Cathedral Choir of Phoenix.
Plenary Indulgence
Participants in the Year of Mercy can gain a plenary indulgence for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, provided they
meet the following conditions:
“To experience and obtain the Indulgence, the faithful are called to make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy Door,
open in every Cathedral or in the churches designated by the Diocesan Bishop, and in the four Papal Basilicas
in Rome, as a sign of the deep desire for true conversion.” — from the Letter of His Holiness Pope Francis.*
A plenary indulgence also requires that the individual:
 Be in the state of grace
 Have complete detachment from sin
 Pray for the Pope's intentions
 Confess their sins and receive Communion up to about 20 days before or after completing the other acts

Friday Adoration and Confessions
Beginning on Friday December 18, 2015, Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral will have Confessions and Adoration
from 6PM-8PM each Friday night during Year of Mercy. Fr. Lankeit will be available to hear Confessions and
Bishop Olmsted will be available occasionally. This Adoration and Confession time for the Year of Mercy will
take the place of our normal First Friday Holy Hour for Vocations. There will be occasion exceptions to the
schedule—Christmas, for instance, which falls on Friday this year; Good Friday).

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In today’s Gospel John the Baptist urges us
to “Prepare the way of the Lord,” and this is
what Advent is all about. We are called to
help prepare the way of the Lord by making
the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our hearts,
in our family and to reach out to those in need.
We are so grateful for our parish community of Ss.
Simon and Jude for the generosity of last week’s 5th
Sunday collection. Because of your loving hearts and
generous spirit, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be
able to help families with Christmas dinners and toys for
the children. We have a heartfelt wish that all of you
could be with us at our Pantry as we give out the turkey
dinners and toys, along with a community prayer and a
Christmas booklet with the story of the Nativity. The
families who come into our Pantry for Christmas help are
so touched and extremely grateful as they express their
thankfulness to all the wonderful, loving neighbors who
have given God’s love to all of them.
We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord in our
community, in our hearts and in our families and to
reach out to those in need.

Horario de Eventos



El Ritual de la Apertura de la Puerta de la Misericordia iniciará en el Centro de
Nuestra Señora de Loreto (Gimnasio) en la Escuela de San Simón y Judas.
El Obispo luego nos llevara en procesión de dos cuadras por Maryland y la
Avenida 27 dirigiéndonos hacia las Puertas de la Misericordia. El Obispo hará
una pausa para abrir oficialmente las puertas santas. Dirigidos por nuestro pastor
líder, la procesión continuará a través de estas puertas.
La Santa Misa abrirá el Año de la Misericordia el cual el Papa Francisco ha
exhortado a cada uno de nosotros para “Ser Misericordiosos como el Padre.”
Música para la Misa será proveída por el Coro de la Catedral de Phoenix.
Indulgencia Plenaria
Los participantes en el Año de la Misericordia pueden obtener una indulgencia plenaria para el Año Jubiloso
de la Misericordia, al cumplir las siguientes condiciones:
“Para experimentar y obtener la Indulgencia, los fieles son llamados a hacer una breve peregrinación hacia la

Adoración de Viernes y Confesiones
A partir del viernes, 18 de diciembre del 2015, la Catedral de San Simón y Judas tendrá Confesiones y Adoración de 6PM-8PM cada viernes por la noche durante el Año de la Misericordia. El Padre Lankeit estará disponible para oir Confesiones, y el Obispo Olmsted estará disponible en ciertas ocasiones. Este horario de Adoración
y Confesión para el Año de la Misericordia tomará el lugar de nuestra Hora Santa de primer viernes para vocaciones. Habrá excepciones para este horario debido a otros eventos—Navidad, por ejemplo, se celebra en viernes
este año, o Viernes Santo.
