ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL The Bishop asks all the parishes to participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). We do this by making pledges which are paid off each month during the year until December. As you know, once we pay the goal of the Diocese everything pledged and paid over the goal comes back to the parish for our needs. No money needs to be paid at that time, we just have to fill out the pledge form in Church. The diocese will mail you monthly reminder bills to collect the payments. Many of you already received the pledge forms in the mail and have begun to send them in. Thank you for this. Pledge forms are in the Church and in the Rectory. We hope every family will try to make at least some pledge to help the Bishop and help our parish to take care of our needs. PAGE THREE MARCH 8, 2015 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…. I am now ready to speak with you in detail about a project which will begin this Spring. It is the Restoration of the Lower Basilica to be useable again for prayer and worship, as it was meant to be when it was originally built. Fortunately, it will not need any excavation, except for the addition of an elevator, since the original layout of the Church is still there. It will be called “St. Joseph’s Chapel.” It is scheduled to be completed by December. With Mary upstairs and Joseph below, it will become again a true home for Jesus and for us. As with the building of any new church, it will involve a new sanctuary area, new pulpits, new furnishings, restored stained glass windows (which are still there), new flooring, new lighting, new sound system, heating and air conditioning and everything needed to make the Lower Basilica as dignified and prayerful as the Basilica itself. Needless to say, it will involve money which we don’t have. However, everything we have done in these past few years-from the handicap ramp, new boilers, upgraded air conditioning, restoration of the main organ, special Basilica appointments, new vestments, new outdoor lighting, the memorial garden outside, some new furnishings inside, to the new Basilica Conference Center and Gift Shop, and many other things, have all been done without the money beforehand. Through the generosity of our people, good money management and the offering of items in memory of loved ones, we have been able to accomplish all these projects. I hope that the same will be true for St. Joseph’s Chapel. Everything will be available to be donated in memory of loved ones, especially those who have been parishioners here in their lifetime. The second part of this project will be the creation of a Columbarium in St. Joseph’s Chapel to house the cremated remains of those who are deceased and cremated and who wish to be buried in our Church. The ability to house the ashes of those who have died, indoors, in a real Church, where Masses and prayers will be said each day, is a much more attractive way of respecting the dead than keeping the urns in the garage or basement of a home, or worse, scattering ashes in the air or the sea. This is the part of cremation that is prohibited by the Catholic Church. In fact, cremation is allowed only if the remains are buried in a cemetery or in a Columbarium. Having a columbarium inside the Basilica enables people to visit these graves of their loved ones anytime they wish without having to travel long distances. It is also far less costly than purchasing a grave, opening, maintaining and travelling to a gravesite in a far away cemetery. Since the niches containing the urns will have marble or glass front which will be engraved, even the cost of a tombstone is eliminated. The cost varies according to location, type of niche (glass or stone) and other options; but should begin at around $5000. Larger niches will be available to accommodate couples and whole families. Compare this to the cost of traditional burials. We will also have a section of the Chapel dedicated to remembering people who are buried elsewhere or who already own graves in a cemetery but wish to have their names placed in our parish church to be remembered in prayer. Some people have already spoken to me about the possibility of selling already purchased graves back to the cemeteries in order to be interred here at Regina when the time comes. Also, because Regina is a Papal Basilica, it cannot be closed or merged with any other Church in the future. The remains will be safe here. People have already heard about this project, and calls have come from former parishioners who now live in Florida, North Carolina, Staten Island, New Jersey and other places, who wish to have their cremated remains buried in Regina. There is already great interest in the project. I am sure you will have many questions about these two projects –St. Joseph’s Chapel and Columbarium--which will be answered in due time. For now, my wish is to keep you informed of our plans and to begin to get you thinking about memorializing and donating some part of the new St. Joseph’s Chapel. A good way to begin to help us is to make a larger pledge in the Annual Catholic Appeal since all monies collected after we reach our diocesan goal will come back to the parish for our use. Within a short time you will be able to view renderings of this project and to reserve space in a pre-construction sale for yourselves and your families. Each inurnment will be accompanied by a Mass for the deceased and a liturgical ceremony to place the urns in the spot you have chosen. No other parish in the Diocese will have this feature and our Basilica will again be considered unique. Our Bishop and his advisors have given their full permission for us to begin. I am hopeful that, with your help, we will soon have a beautiful Chapel in honor of St. Joseph and a bright and dignified place to remember our loved ones. Rev. Msgr. The confessional is not a torture chamber, but the place in which the Lord's mercy motivates us to do better. In life we all make many mistakes. Let us learn to recognize our errors and ask for forgiveness. Jesus is never far from us sinners. He wants to pour out on us, without limit, all of his mercy. Only trust in God can transform doubts into certainty, evil into good, night into radiant dawn. The gift of the Holy Spirit: RIGHT JUDGEMENT (COUNSEL) During Lent, open—— and use——the gift of RIGHT JUDGEMENT (COUNSEL). Decisions! From the time we decide to get up out of bed, we make choices. This gift helps us to decide which way to act in difficult situations. It gives us the strength to see both sides of the picture accurately when we are making major decisions in our lives. God waited countless generations before sending Jesus. And one thing God is really slow at is to anger! Time after time the bible describes our God as a God who is slow to anger. Right judgement helps us avoid making rash judgements. The gift of Right Judgement is the gift to make good choices— God’s choices. Many times our decisions seem to be based on merely one thing: money. We chose the career where we will make the most money. We buy the bottle of milk that will save us the most money. Money seems to determine how much time we spend with our families. The gift of Right Judgment helps us seek God’s counsel, God’s advice. Idea: This week I will pray about my biggest life decisions: family, vocation, career. Prayer: God of Right Judgement, you are slow to anger and quick to forgive. May your Holy Spirit of Right Judgement free us from all resentment and prejudice.
