They bring back both the aroma and comfort of Easter especially after the sacrifices of Holy Lent! St. Francis of Assisi, a deacon of the Church, wrote only one prayer called “The Canticle of the Sun”. I hate to be the bearer of bad news on Easter but he did not write or even know about the so-called “Prayer of St. Francis”. It was written sometime around 1912 in France (not Italy) and originally titled, “A beautiful prayer to say during Mass”. It later made its way to Italy where it was printed on the back of a Holy Card with St. Francis’ image on the front of the card and re-titled “Prayer for Peace”. By World War II the image and the prayer became synonymous and it was re-titled yet a third time to “Prayer of St. Francis” and the rest, as they say, is history! Back to St. Francis and the prayer he actually composed, “The Canticle of the Sun”. It is a prayer praising God in His mighty works of creation. The prayer is fitting for Easter and Spring since it captures the meaning of the Resurrection and the praise of all creation for God’s goodness found in Jesus; “Most High, all powerful, good Lord, Yours are the praises, the glory, the honor, and all blessing. To You alone, Most High, do they belong, and no man is worthy to mention Your name. Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and you give light through him. And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness. Praise be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful. Page 1 640 Page 3 April 5, 2015 - The Resurrection of the Lord - The Mass of Easter Day Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Wind, and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather through which You give sustenance to Your creatures. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water, which is very useful and humble and precious and chaste. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Mother Earth, who sustains us and governs us and who produces varied fruits with colored flowers and herbs. Praised be You, my Lord, through those who give pardon for Your love, and bear infirmity and tribulation. Blessed are those who endure in peace for by You, Most High, they shall be crowned. Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whom no living man can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin. Blessed are those whom death will find in Your most holy willl, for the second death shall do them no harm. Praise and bless my Lord, and give Him thanks and serve Him with great humility. In the final stanzas, St. Francis praises God for bodily death to which everyone is subject and no one escapes, but if you do God’s Will and live a holy life there is nothing to fear. No fear because Jesus has paid our ransom by His death on the Cross and by His resurrection, death causes us no harm. Jesus gives us life but we must live that life united to His Cross and in hopefulness of sharing in His Resurrection. If we believe this and live it daily neither sin nor death can do us any harm. I am a Sister of St. Dominic, a member of the Dominican Order, a worldwide Religious community of Nuns, Sisters, Friars, Brothers and Laity. What is pertinent to this celebration of Easter is that Mary of Magdala is the Patron Saint of the entire Order. The OP after my name stands for Order of Preachers and Mary is considered to be the first Preacher of the Resurrection. It was she who first discovered the empty tomb and then ran to announce the news to Peter and the other disciples. It is worth noting that the #1 Preacher was a woman! It is also worth thinking about the fact that Mary of Magdala went to the tomb as a grieving friend of the crucified Jesus. She acted as an ordinary friend would. She then responded to what she found by sharing the news with others who loved Jesus. She did not say “I will preach the Good News.” She simply did it. A Blessed Easter to all. Kids, Teens, Adults: Easter is the greatest feast of the entire year. It is the premier Truth of our Christian faith. Celebrate the Holyday well.
