Sisters and brothers at St. Catherine of Alexandria
I believe that many of you still live in the good spirit of the Holy Week. Whenever I come into the Church, my
mind still sees the blessed faces of the first communicants who received the Body and Blood of Jesus for the first
time. I also see the angelic smiles of the children who walked hand in hand with their mothers into the Church,
holding the lit candle on Easter night, and of course, I will never forget the sound of the bells when all of us sang
“Glory to God” during our Easter Vigil Mass. These many well prepared ceremonies -such as the blessing of the
fire, the procession, the baptism, - are good paths for all of us to prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is not just the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Church on one Sunday. But rather, it is the blessing of the
Holy Spirit upon each and every one of us throughout the season. Here, I have to say thanks to God, to you for
your participation, and to the members of the Liturgy committee who prepared and planned the events in Lent
and Holy Week so beautifully.
All of these activities have reflected your response to the survey of the transition team when you said you wanted
to focus more on spirituality. With these strong recommendations from you and with Pope Francis’ teachings we
all should now focus more on evangelization to the family, and with the coming of the jubilee year of mercy Pope
Francis emphasized: “We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity
and peace,”
I want to share with you my vision on how to increase spirituality and growth in faith: Church catechesis prior to
Mass, more time for confession, Eucharistic adoration, evangelization through the bulletin, etc…these are all the
signs of this vision. I am grateful to those who come early to Church to attend the Church catechesis. Soon, information of the youth ministry, including a youth mass will be announced. Priests, who are familiar with youth
ministry and youth Mass, will be invited to our parish. However, youth ministry is not limited only to Mass. It is
the invitation and the ministry to the non-registered families and to those who are not familiar with the activities
of the Church.
Together with this plan, the formation of the children in the faith formation program will be improved more.
The new plan for the catechism schedule as the diocese required is now implemented. We will provide workshops to the parents who are the primary teachers of the children as it is a part of the whole catechesis’ program.
“The more we know, the more we love.” We do not only know the beauty of our art in the Church, we should
know the biblical and theological meaning of it as well. We do not only do the liturgical rites as the Church
taught, we also must understand why we do it. And in this respect I believe all of you received the flier “The Art
in Our Church.” It was sent few months ago to all registered members to give some of this explanation.
In addition to these spiritual needs, improvement of the traffic flow and of the sound system are recognized. As
you see, we just re-finished the kneelers and the pews. We will stencil the numbers of the Station of the Cross
on the white pillars under each station. Our church now looks very good and I want to invite you to help our
Church be a good looking place for many years to come. Please, do not let the children nor anyone damage that
beauty by scratching the kneelers or the pews. Do not allow anyone to damage the Hall or our facilities. It is your
Church and any damage will have to be repaired…and remember…it is your money used for these repairs.
To assist these plans, recently, a new committee was formed. Many good and talented leaders are serving in the
DDF (Diocesan Development Fund) committee. They are planning activities both for the parish and to raise
fund for these missions and for the general needs of our Church.
Finally, I am grateful to many volunteers and ministers who are serving in different ministries to help our parish.
Soon the ministries council will be formed, and we can strengthen the activities of all ministries even more.
Once again, with much gratitude, I thank you very much for your support. Together we will build up God’s kingdom…and together we will make this parish more beautiful.
Your brother in Christ

Reflecting on God’s Word
My friend the storyteller Bob Wilhelm shared an “artful” variation
on the story of the choice of Matthias. Both Matthias and Barsabbas were artists, so St. Peter decided on a contest. He divided
the upper room where the community gathered for worship with
a curtain, giving half to each man to decorate as he saw fit. The
community would declare the winner and Judas’ successor.
Barsabbas, a painter, sent for his brushes and a rich assortment of
paints. All week long he painted lovely scenes of Jesus preaching,
teaching, healing, casting out demons. His brush captured the
parables, illuminating them. Matthias, a stonecutter and polisher,
also toiled all week behind his curtain. People could hear only his
humming and soft singing.
The day came and the people entered Barsabbas’ half of the
church. They broke into applause at his artistry. The uses of color
were magnificent. They found themselves depicted in his paintings. They were delighted. Peter became worried. How could
Matthias’ work possibly compete with this? But he went over to
the curtain and turned it back.
Silence filled the room as people turned to see what Matthias had
done. His work had been to polish the stone walls of the chapel’s
other half, allowing people to see themselves as never before. The
walls shone like mirrors and every person was given a sense of
the beauty of Christ shining within them, a glimpse of the divine
spark each one carried within. And so Matthias was chosen to replace Judas. He had revealed Christ by revealing Christ’s followers
to themselves. —James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R.
