In addition to funding our spring round of Mini-Grants, we wrapped up another successful Fashion Show. Twice a year, the PTA grants money to teachers and staff through our Mini-Grants program. We were thrilled to approve an increased budget of over $12,000 in spring Mini-Grants at our March 3 meeting. Areas of support include school support, clubs, leadership, academic enrichment, and equipment. We will fund new classroom technology, including document cameras, a special prom for students with severe disabilities, materials for the Intercambio Language Exchange, and much more! Thank you, Elizabeth Katz and Nancy Kessler, for chairing Mini-Grants this year. We also owe a huge thank you to our fabulous Fashion Show chairs, Karen Fryling, Michelle Culhane, Nancy Kessler and Mary Fischer, who have worked tirelessly over the past several months to put on our biggest fundraiser of the year. M-Aking Fashion H15tory was a huge success, and the money raised will allow us to continue funding programs such as Mini-Grants and Challenge Day. This year’s senior class could not have looked better. Thank you to our chairs, our volunteers, the seniors, and those who attended the show. We had the honor of hearing from some award-winning students at our March general meeting. Three students, Taylor Fryling, Alexandra Watson Tremellen, and Jerry W. Liu presented their art projects from the PTA Reflections Art Program, led by parent Julie Ann Minn. See below for more information about this great program. Your contribution to the M-A PTA, whether in volunteer hours or a monetary donation, truly does make a difference. Please join us at our next general meeting on Tuesday, April 28, at 8:45 am in the PAC cafe. We will be voting in the slate of PTA officers for next year. Many thanks to our Nominating Committee: Kim Steere, Frances Gray, Valerie Ambwani, Margaret Perrone, and Paula Rash. Have a wonderful Spring Break! We hope to see you at our April meeting. Email [email protected] 6 April 2015 TriVocis SAT Subject Tests In addition to the SAT, some private colleges (generally the most selective ones) require that students take SAT subject tests as part of the admission process. While SAT subject tests are no longer required by UC, some campuses recommend that students seeking spots in competitive majors take the tests to demonstrate subject proficiency. These are recommendations by UC, not mandates. A few UC campuses recommend that students take certain SAT subject tests for specific colleges/schools and majors. Even if subject tests are not recommended, they can add merit to a student’s application (but students cannot be penalized for failing to take them). Subject tests differ from the SAT in that the SAT examines aptitude over a limited amount of material while the subject tests are generally course-specific and more comprehensive. Some colleges may ask for a distribution of subject tests over different content areas. The subject tests commonly taken by M-A students are math II (through precalculus), literature, biology, chemistry, U.S. history, Spanish, and French. The tests directly measure what students have learned in school, so ideally students take them in June at the conclusion of a particular course. Because the foreign language and math tests include content from many years of study, they may also be taken in the fall if a student has completed the appropriate course. Students should only consider a language test if they are finishing the fourth level of the language. The SAT 0 period prep class is ending on May 1, and many students will then begin preparing for the SAT subject tests that will be given on June 6, two days after the last day of school. This year, as in the past ten years, we plan to open our subject-test prep classes to all juniors and sophomores at M-A in the following subjects: math (Mr. Whitnah), biology (Mr. Roisen), literature (Ms. Strub), and chemistry (Mrs. McAllister). Most preparatory classes will run two weeks (alternating weeks) on every weekday morning or afternoon except Wednesday mornings. During these two-week sessions, students will review the content, take practice tests (actual tests from the past), and go over these tests. In addition to preparing for their subject tests, many students will enjoy the additional benefit of reviewing content for finals. Math classes will be offered from 7:50 to 8:40 am or after school from 3:20 to 4:10 pm; biology and chemistry will meet only in the afternoon, and literature will meet only in the morning. We seek donations from students and their families to pay the teachers. The Foundation for the Future will supplement the cost, but we hope the program can be self-supporting. We recommend a $50 donation per student per class, but all students are welcome. If your son or daughter wishes to enroll in one or two sessions to prepare for a subject test, he or she can do so in room D20 during lunch on Wednesday, April 15. Please be sure your student brings the following application form and that the form has your signature. Note: Students who plan to take a subject test should sign up now at www.collegeboard.com. They will be asked to select their test subjects when registering, but generally they can change the test topic(s) on the June 6 testing date. Usually, they can also sign up for additional tests on the test date, to be billed later for an extra fee. Registration for 2015-16 Guidance Counselors have met with students to register for classes for the 2015-16 academic year. Please note the following: • Students are encouraged to review course selections with parents and consider other extracurricular activities, athletic team participation, family commitments, job obligations, etc. in order to balance course load. • The master schedule is largely determined by this registration. • Parents of students who will take their first Advanced Placement (AP) class next year should plan to attend a meeting on April 29, 2015 at 6:30 pm in the library in English and in the PAC Cafeteria in Spanish. The purpose of the meeting is to better understand the expectations for the coming school year. • The final deadline to make changes for next year is May 22, 2015. • A level change will only be allowed if space permits during the following time periods: o During the first two weeks of the school year: 8/18/15 - 9/1/15; o At the quarter: 10/12/15 - 10/23/15; or o At the semester: 12/14/15 - 1/8/16. Summer School 2015 Update Summer school will be offered at Menlo-Atherton High School and will only be open to M-A students. Enrollment in summer school is extremely limited and will be primarily for remediation for students who earned a grade of F, FA or NA in courses required for graduation. Summer school is only for students who meet the summer school eligibility criteria if space permits and will be offered at Menlo-Atherton High School as follows: • First session: Monday, June 15 - Thursday, July 2. • Second session: Monday, July 6 - Thursday, July 23. Both sessions will be held from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm Monday through Friday. There is a strict attendance policy. Please plan your vacations accordingly. VERY important: If your student does not attend the first day of summer school and does not call ahead to notify the summer school office, he or she will lose his or her spot. If students miss more than 10 hours of summer school (5 hours for quarter classes) they will be dropped and not earn credit. Tardies are included in these hours. If you TriVocis April 2015 9 have any questions, please contact Mr. Gregg Patner, Summer School Principal, at [email protected]. Students who earn a D grade in a class required for entering a four-year college after high school need to repeat this class in order to meet college admissions requirements. If this is the case, please find other options for summer school by visiting the mabears.org website and click on Academics, then click on Guidance Resources, and click on Resources. You will see a document titled Summer Programs 2015. If a student takes any class outside of M-A, prior approval must be obtained by completing the Concurrent Enrollment Form, also located at the mabears.org website under the Guidance Resources area. This completed form is due to your counselor PRIOR to June 12, 2015. Attention Athletes Athletes must maintain a 2.0 weighted grade point average (GPA) in order to remain eligible for sports during the 2015-2016 academic year. Athletes who have an injury that affects their participation in sports must contact their Guidance Counselor immediately. Physical Education (P.E.) Students may take P.E. (Kinesiology Department) classes at community college during the summer through the Concurrent Enrollment program. The credits students earn in these classes count towards the 20 credits of physical education required for graduation. Please refer to the information listed below for the credit conversion for students who take P.E. classes at a community college: Colleges on Semester Schedule—Cañada College, College of San Mateo, Skyline College: 1 college unit of P.E. (Kinesiology) = 2.5 credits of P.E. at Menlo-Atherton H.S. Colleges on Quarter Schedule—Foothill College: 2 college units of P.E. (Kinesiology) = 2.5 credits of P.E. at Menlo-Atherton H.S. Students interested in this option must pick up a schedule of classes for the community college(s), as well as the respective concurrent enrollment form(s), and see their Guidance Counselor. These classes fill up quickly. Please refer to the forms for information on registration deadlines. Please note that it may be more difficult for students to take community college courses because priority for these courses rests with community college students. Concurrent Enrollment Any student who plans to complete any class outside of M-A needs to obtain prior approval by completing the Concurrent Enrollment Form, which is located at the mabears.org website. If you click on Academics, then click on Guidance Resources, and click on Resources, you will find the document titled Concurrent Enrollment Form 2015-2016. The community college concurrent enrollment forms are located on the college website or in the Career Center and Guidance Office and generally have earlier deadlines and oftentimes require students to take placement tests. Please see your counselor early for information. Class of 2016 Please note that if you plan to complete any graduation requirements outside of the Sequoia Union High School District, you must obtain approval in advance to take these requirements and complete the necessary forms prior to signing up. It is hard for students (and families) not to take college admission decisions personally, but it is important to understand what is behind these decisions, and to take them as philosophically and positively as possible. While I have enough years of perspective to know that students who have not been admitted to the college of their choice will find a spot somewhere and be perfectly happy, students who have met with “rejection” are not ready to take such a clear-thinking attitude. We need to remember (and remind others) that it’s a time to be sensitive to the feelings of both the elated and the devastated. Students whose dreams have come true need to celebrate with a sensitive eye to those around them who have been less fortunate. Everything will be okay … but there are students right now who do not realize that—yet. For more information on the way highly selective colleges make their admission decisions, please see my web site at http://macareercenter.com/faq.html#hsc. This is also an important time of year to be sensitive to juniors, many of whom are receiving their first set of SAT scores. It’s a time to remember that there isn’t a single college at which test scores are the most important admission factor. It’s a time to remember that SAT scores are private, and if students don’t feel like sharing their scores outside the family, that’s okay (in fact, it’s great!). It’s a time to remember that test scores don’t define students—in fact, they do not come close to representing a student’s worth or value. And it’s a time to remember that students often take test scores more seriously than they should, and believe those scores matter more than they do. So anything we can do to reinforce in our juniors their true personal qualities and character traits will go far toward helping them maintain perspective on test scores and their importance (or lack thereof). As always, please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns. Who Doesn’t Love a Whodunit? Lord Cyril Pierce Ninny, known to his (few) friends as “Budgy,” is a self-made zillionaire and CEO of Ninny International. Budgy enjoys strained relations with his fourth wife, the dignified Lady Ariadne Dithering-Ninny, who has hired local radio personality Dirk Belltone to host his birthday bash. Budgy’s obnoxious heirs, Erin, Ernesto and Errol Ninny, are expected to attend, along with many of Budgy’s business associates. An airplane aficionado, Budgy has promised to make an entrance no one will forget. But the real suspense of the evening is the announcement of the winner of the multimillion dollar Ninny endowment, which will go to one lucky local arts group. The top contenders are represented by Isadora Graham-Cracker, Ehrhardt Von Ehrhardt, and Arrabella Langostino, who appear to despise one another. The audience members play guests at Budgy’s birthday bash, where fun just might turn to tragedy. 16 April 2015 TriVocis Reflections Art Competition Winners This year marks M-A's first time participating in the Reflections Arts Competition. Reflections is a national PTA program that has been in existence for over 40 years. It's a theme-based competition that covers six arts disciplines: Film Production, Music Composition, Dance Choreography, Visual Arts, Photography and Literature. The students create a work of art based on this year's theme, "The World Would Be A Better Place If..." The work is judged by working artists within our community, and the winners at the high school advance to district, then hopefully to state and national competitions. With over 500 attendees registered for this event, it is obvious that Bruni’s message strikes a powerful chord with parents, students and community members. Americans have turned the college admissions process into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, one that involves tutors, test prep, college rankings, and the unfounded conviction by many young people that their futures are determined and their worth established by which schools say “yes” and which say “no.” That belief is wrong, says Bruni. Instead, college should be viewed as “a singular opportunity to rummage through and luxuriate in ideas, to realize how very large the world is and to contemplate your desired place in it. And that’s lost in the admissions mania, which sends the message that college is a sanctum to be breached—a border to be crossed—rather than a land to be inhabited and tilled for all that it’s worth.” In Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be, Bruni gives students and their parents a new outlook on the deeply flawed competition of college admissions and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes. Alice Kleeman, M-A college advisor and a contributing expert to Bruni’s new book, will moderate the Q & A following Frank Bruni’s presentation. Kepler’s Books will offer sales of Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be in the PAC Foyer, and the author will sign books following the presentation. 2014-15 Second semester offerings: Monday, April 6, 2015 Frank Bruni, New York Times columnist and bestselling author, Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania Q&A moderated by Alice Kleeman, M-A College Advisor 7:00-8:30 pm, M-A PAC Thursday, May 7, 2015 “How to Encourage Healthy Sports Participation” with Steve Smith, Ph.D., Palo Alto University 7:00-8:30 pm, M-A PAC M-A Parent Education Series events are free and sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.
