To the Menlo-Atherton
Community
As the new Principal of Menlo-Atherton, I would
like to re-introduce myself to our current and future
families. Menlo-Atherton High School has been my
home for the last 13 years, and I have found it to be
an exciting, challenging, and dynamic school community that provides rich experiences for all students. I love my work as an educator, fostering a
positive school climate, encouraging students to pursue all options, and supporting engaging instruction
in the classroom.
I have been fortunate to grow up in the Bay Area,
after immigrating to the United States at the age of 9
from Johannesburg, South Africa. I attended San
Mateo High School and thoroughly enjoyed my junior and senior English classes
that set me on the path to be an educator. I got my Bachelor of Arts degree at
U.C. Berkeley in English and continued to pursue graduate education, including
a Master of Arts degree in Special Education, as well as multiple teaching credentials, with the opportunity to teach graduate level courses at San Francisco State
University. I taught for fourteen years (five years at M-A), transitioned to Dean
of Students in 2007, and a year later was promoted to Administrative Vice Principal. Now, as I start my 23rd year in education, I am honored to have been selected as Menlo-Atherton’s next Principal.

Farewell from Matthew Zito
As I write my last Trivocis article, I have the pleasure of reflecting on my tenure at Menlo-Atherton
and the progress the school has made over that
time. While not perfect (and no school ever is), M-A
is a tremendous place that offers a great education
for life. I’m most proud of improving the quality of
the teaching across all levels of the academic program and greatly enhancing the climate on campus. The new buildings and other physical improvements to the site are a source of pride and
have made M-A beautiful, but are secondary to what I hope my legacy will be.

Of course, mine was just one part of a larger effort that involved staff, parents, and other key supporters that wanted to see the school move past its 1970s self and be put on a much brighter trajectory. While the school faces a few
challenges as it grows, Simone Kennel will lead the school to great heights.
It’s been a once in a lifetime career with only fond memories.
Sincerely, Matthew Zito
Update on selection process for new Administrative Vice Principal
Interviews for a new Administrative Vice Principal will be held on Friday, May 15 at the Sequoia Union High
School District office. Second interviews for top candidates are scheduled for Tuesday, May 19. The new Administrative Vice Principal will be in place to start on July 1, 2015.
Welcome Class of 2019 Families
Welcome all of our new families and the entire class of 2019! While the transition to high school is a major one (my
son, who is also in the class of 2019, will be going through this transition), there are many built-in supports that will
help your child navigate M-A. If you are a first time freshman family, there is no need to worry—your children are
our top priority, and we will care for them well. In four short years, they will be matriculating into a wonderful variety of colleges and other post-secondary options.
Here are some things to discuss with your child as he/she enters 9th grade:
• Encourage your child to join a fall sports team: football, girls volleyball, boys and girls water polo, girls tennis,
girls golf, or cross-country. Before your child joins a team, you’ll need to complete the permission form. To
do so, go to www.mabears.org, “Policies and Forms,” and select “Athletic Packet.” Complete the Electronic
Permit to Participate in Athletics for 2015-2016 at http://sportsnethost.com/menlo-atherton or download a hard
copy.
• Know the location of student bathrooms, lockers, and main thoroughfares.
• Utilize the premier planner provided to all students (to be handed out during the first days of school) and encourage your child to take Cornell-style notes in class.
• Have your child think about their peer group—where will they eat lunch and with whom during the first few
weeks?
• Provide snacks for students to munch on in the late morning.
• Teach your child how to operate a combination padlock (for their hallway and PE locker).
• Determine your child’s transportation route to and from school, including drop-off and pick-up points.
• Register for School Loop, our on line learning management system, for daily assignments and progress updates.
End-of-Year Announcements and Reminders:
• Our sixty-fourth graduation ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, at 4 pm on Coach Parks Field. Class
of 2015 graduates need to arrive in Ayer’s Gym by 3:00 pm sharp. We recommend carpooling to the graduation ceremony. Overflow parking will be available at SRI and USGS.
• The school office will be closed for the end of the year staff luncheon on Friday June 5 from 1:00 pm to 4:00
pm.
• Early Bird Athletic Clearance is scheduled for Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31 10 am-2 pm in the main
administrative wing.

Cogan also rowed earlier Sunday to a thrilling Silver win in the Men's

Estimada Comunidad de
Menlo-Atherton

From the PTA
Welcome to our final article as your M-A PTA co-presidents. This job seemed daunting when we began our tenure last
August. However, we quickly realized that, while busy, managing the PTA was really pleasant because of all of the dedicated volunteers who chair and staff the more than thirty PTA committees that help keep the school running. Whether
it is gathering volunteers to support administrative tasks, contributing to Teacher Appreciation events, or organizing
our annual Fashion Show, M-A parents consistently step up and help our causes, which in turn helps our students. We
are grateful for everyone in this incredibly talented and generous community who selflessly gave their time and donations to help the PTA run successfully this year. We leave the PTA in the capable hands of Kim Steere and Terri Muschott, along with Taylor Perkins, Dori Britts, Cecilia Pinto, Susan Chung, Lubov Filonova, and Dianne Child. Please
give your support to this fabulous new team.
As we end the year and reflect on the past ten months, the PTA would like to recognize and thank volunteers who have
gone above and beyond the call of duty. We are pleased to announce the recognition of these dedicated volunteers for
the hundreds of hours that they selflessly give to M-A.

Senior Awards Night
Honoring Outstanding Achievements The annual M-A Senior Awards Night will be held on Tuesday, June 2, at 7:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center.
During this inspirational evening, sponsored by the M-A PTA, many hard-working and talented seniors (and a
smaller number of juniors) are honored for outstanding academic and extracurricular performance as well as service
to the school and community. Some of the awards will be a surprise, while many will be recognition for awards already received. Students will be recognized for a wide variety of scholarships, prizes, and commendations awarded
by school and community groups. Last year, more than two hundred individuals were recognized.
Invitations will be mailed to families of students who will be receiving recognition. Awards to junior students will be
presented early in the program (so juniors can go home to study for finals!), followed by senior awards. Refreshments will be served.
Congratulations to the deserving recipients!

Arts Center.

A Love Note to Our Admin Support Volunteers
About seven times this past year (and every year before that), Admin Support volunteers have put their lives on
hold to help M-A staff, students, and other families navigate through the busy administrative steps involved with a
large public school. They offered friendly faces when they greeted new families to Arena Check-In, handed out
schedules to anxious students, lugged heavy textbooks to and from dozens of library carts to ensure that your students had the tools they needed for class, helped process and proctor the AP tests your children thought they wanted … and kept responding to the calls we issued to our Admin Support volunteers.
After a few years each on this committee, Mary and I are signing off as chairs in order to allow other parents the
chance to experience the wonder of this particular Committee: the amazing, generous volunteers, YOU, who always
respond to the clang-clang-clang of our emails. You have made this job easy and smooth but we really and truly always knew that you were the heart of it.
Please continue to support our amazing M-A high school through the Admin Support Committee. We’ll see you
when we too join the volunteer rank and file starting in August.
Thank you is too small a word for your unbroken commitment to help, but please know that nothing you have
done has gone unnoticed. Have a wonderful and well-earned summer!

TriVocis
Career Center
Writing my last Trivocis article in anticipation of my June retirement brings
a flood of memories of my 20 years as College Advisor, and in particular
memories of Trivocis articles that I hope have made an impression on our
community. I remember in particular an article I’ve run several times in
Trivocis about my strong feelings about the benefits of starting in community college. So many former students have told me that my support for that path has made a difference for them. I remember also my Trivocis article (perhaps slightly less well received?) about the “rescue” lunch bags I see every day in the
front office, and why they cause me concern about parents unwittingly (and with the best of intentions) enabling their
students in a way that certainly will not be possible once those students head off for college. (That is, of course, unless
students begin taking their parents to college with them.) I remember writing an article for Trivocis doing my best to explain
how highly selective colleges select a class, and why students who are not admitted to these schools should not take those
decisions personally. I enjoyed writing a Trivocis article highlighting Linfield College in Oregon as an example of lesserknown but top-notch colleges our students should consider. My contributions to Trivocis have been important to me
because I love the feeling that we are a community, working together in the best interest of the students; Trivocis is one of
the strongest tools we can use in that process.
I definitely plan not to be a stranger to M-A; I will see many of you in the future, just in a different context! If the new
College Advisor wants support, I will be available. And after I become accustomed to my retirement, I will seek opportunities to pursue my passion for helping first-generation-to-college students achieve their dreams by volunteering in an organization that furthers that goal.
Despite the current frenzy around college admission, I’d like to remind our community that, as Frank Bruni so eloquently
attests in his book, “Where you go is not who you’ll be.” After two decades of college advising, I have the perspective to
say that it all works out in the end!
Thank you all for 20 wonderful years!

From the Guidance Office
Changes Coming to the Guidance Department in 2015-16
Due to increasing enrollment, M-A will be adding two new guidance counselors for the 2015-2016 school year, for a
total of eight counselors. Counselors are assigned specific letters of the alphabet and their caseloads are made up of
students with last names beginning with their assigned letters. The alphabet assignment will need to be reconfigured
to accommodate the new counselors. This will result in some guidance counselor changes for existing students, but
counselor caseloads will be smaller. M-A will follow a strategic process to reassign letters of the alphabet to the
eight counselors. Caseloads will be published once new counselors are hired. If you have questions for the 2015-16
school now, please contact the counselor currently assigned to your student's last name.

Graphing Calculators at M-A
Graphing calculators are an integral part of math education at M-A. They are used in all
classes beginning with algebra II and including AS algebra II, algebra II/trig, precalculus,
AP statistics, statistics, and AP calculus AB/BC. Ninth-grade geometry students use scientific calculators in the spring semester, but some students get graphing calculators instead,
knowing they will need them for algebra II. The calculators are allowed on the SAT I test,
which is referred to as “calculator neutral” because students can use a calculator if they
wish but can solve all problems without one. The other standardized tests—including the
SAT math subject test, AP statistics, and AP calculus (AB and BC)—require graphing calculators. They are also allowed on almost all math contests.
The most versatile calculators for M-A math classes are Texas Instruments’ TI-83+ and
TI-84 series. All teacher presentations will be made with TI equipment. Please do not buy
other brands such as Casio and HP. The TI-83+ and TI-84s all perform well, but there are
differences in prices and functions. TI-84s are what many students purchase. The TI-84 offers three times the speed of the TI-83+, an improved display, more RAM, and a USB port
for students who want to transfer data between their calculator and computer. TI-89s will
not be allowed on tests/quizzes at M-A.
Prices can vary tremendously depending on the store and the time of year. Calculators will
always be considerably cheaper in August and early September, when many stores carry them
as loss leaders and sometimes sell them at or below cost. The TI-84s will cost approximately $20 to $40
more than a TI-83+. The latest TI84’s plus C, come in color and are rechargeable. Some students buy their calculators through eBay, where you can pay as little as $30 for a TI-83+ or $50 for a TI-84. Do not buy a TI-83.
Math teachers encourage students to check out graphing calculators from the department if they choose not to purchase them. This year over 150 students have been using graphing calculators checked out from the Math Department.
If you buy a TI graphing calculator, please save the TI Technology Rewards symbol, which awards points for TI
purchases. We can use these points for earning TI teacher-presentation equipment. Return the POINTS symbol
to your son’s or daughter’s math teacher or to Ms. Payne in room D16, or mail it to Ms. Payne at 555 Middlefield Rd, Atherton, CA 94027.

M-A's Own PSAT/SAT Prep
After fifty years at Menlo-Atherton High School, I find myself very sad
to be leaving, but I am no longer in condition to keep up the work. Consequently, there will not be an M-A's Own fall prep for the PSAT. Parents will need to look elsewhere for appropriate tutoring.
I have enjoyed the contact with the students—full time for the first twenty seven years, when I had all manner of
student contact—and in later years through the test prep courses. They are a great bunch, the young men and women of M-A, and a future credit to the community. You parents have done a good job. I shall miss the work as well as
your sons and daughters, but it is, regretfully, time to say goodbye.

The above group of volunteers managed approximately 940 registrations (over 300 M-A students), hundreds of volunteers and M-A staffers, and the city of Atherton (permits, police and fire departments) to give the community a
flawless 10 year celebration. Their efforts help provide the necessary funds to allow the Menlo-Atherton Athletic
Boosters to support all M-A athletes. THANK YOU!
2016 Commissioner’s Cup Winners!
For the 8th time (7th year in a row), Menlo-Atherton has won the Peninsula Athletic League’s highest honor for outstanding athletics. The award acknowledges team successes and sportsmanship. Congratulations to all our teams!
Spring Sports Awards Night
Congratulations to all the spring athletes and the seniors playing at the next level, celebrated at Spring Sports
Awards Night on May 20! Congratulations to Spring League title winners: girls’ swim – varsity and JV; boys’ swim –
varsity and JV; boys’ tennis; and girls’ JV lacrosse (WBAL).
Spring Boys Volleyball – Inaugural Season
The boys’ varsity volleyball team ended their season with a 12-7 record, finishing the season strong with a 7 game
winning streak! In addition, they will compete as an official sport of the PAL next spring!
We’d like to send a shout out to M-A’s girls’ volleyball teams for their endless support of
the boys’ efforts. They helped at practices and games and cheered the boys whenever
they could. According to program founder, Vicki Knapp, the support the girls showed
the boys, “bridges the boys’ and girls’ program into one amazing volleyball program at
M-A.”
Thank you!
On behalf of the M-A Athletic Boosters, we would like to thank you for supporting our
competing Bears; cheering for them on the field, court, course, diamond or in the water
and providing financial support through your donations to the M-A Athletic Boosters.

Participating in M-A Athletics Next Year?
Athletic Clearance Packets are available at http://www.mabears.org/?id=153.
Congratulations to all our athletes, and especially to our graduating Bears! Have a great summer! Go Bears!
Libby Tinsley and Libby Beasley, Co-Chair Menlo-Atherton Athletic Boosters
10th Annual Big Bear Run!
A very warm and cuddly bear hug to all the amazing runners, walkers, volunteers and sponsors who
helped make the 10th Annual Big Bear Run on Sunday, May 3, 2015 a huge success! This year there were 938
registered runners who came out to support M-A Athletics and our first international runner visiting from Mexico. The M-A Boosters granted over $140,000 to M-A athletic teams this year, funding critically needed equipment
and uniforms, including $85,000 in coaching stipends. Support for the Big Bear Run and M-A Athletic Boosters is a
separate and necessary addition to the donations you may have already made to your athlete’s individual sports
team. Individual team needs far exceed the amount any team can raise alone. Many of the items funded by Boosters
benefit several teams such as the weight room, canopies, electronic timing devices, and our athletic trainers.
Congratulations to the fastest male and female bear, Kevin Conrad (17:41) and Madeleine Baier (20:07). Check
out the race results and great Big Bear Run photos on the M-A Athletic Boosters Web site at www.m-aboosters.org.
Congratulations to the lucky M-A student winners for the end-of-race drawings! Thank you for the contributions of
new and gently used shoes that will be donated to Guatemala.
The race could not have happened without the help of many wonderful volunteers. The Big Bear Committee oversaw all the details such as food, logistics, T-shirts, sponsors, publicity and race planning. Thank you to committee
members Dana Hayse, Megan Johnson, Kathleen Balestra, Libby Beasley, Libby Tinsley, Corby Locke,
Maryellen McCabe, Kristin Spindt, Vicki Knapp, and Jill Roumeliotis. Thank you to the parents, students and
friends who came out race day to help with set-up, registration, food and water, marking the course, and cheering
on the runners. Thank you to Madeleine Baier for her inspiring singing of the Star Spangled Banner, Alexa Roumeliotis and Ryan Cole as the M-A Bear, Eric Wilmurt as our Race Rabbit, Chris McCabe as the race commentator, and Mark Balestra for the fun race photos. Thank you to the Atherton and Menlo Park Police
Departments and the Menlo Park Fire Department for keeping us all safe on the race course. A big thanks to
Brien Oliver, Keith Perkins and Juan Flores and their M-A custodial crew for all the heavy lifting in race preparations, set-up and take down. Thank you to Frances Gray for notifying and distributing letters to all our Lindenwood neighbors. Thank you to the M-A’s own cheer team, lacrosse team, football team, volleyball team, and
swim team for helping out at the race, generating lots of school spirit! Thank you to the AP Environmental students for providing and manning the compost bins. Thank you to Tom Hayse and Jeff Child for marking the

course and cleaning the fire road. Thank you to Annette Smith for the loan of mile marker signs. Thank you for all
the M-A neighbors for accommodating our race so graciously! Thank you to Freewheel Brewing Company for
the space and equipment we used to prepare our food, Hobee’s California Restaurants for the delicious coffee
cake, Bianchini’s Grocery for our fresh fruit, Fleet Feet Sports for our race bibs and gift certificates, Occasions,
etc…for our trophies and medals, Angel Heart Cakes and Jeffery’s Hamburgers for gift cards, and Peet’s Coffee & Tea for the morning coffee.

Sneak Peak for 2015-2016
From NY Times columnist Frank Bruni in discussion of his new book, Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania, to Kent Pekel of Search Institute in “The Perseverance Process: Strategies for
Strengthening Academic Motivation and Persistence,” the M-A Parent Education Series welcomed an outstanding
slate of presenters in 2014-15. Our program is grateful for the support of the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare
District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. Thank you!
Looking ahead to next year, the M-A Parent Education Series has an exciting line-up of events planned for 2015-16.
On August 26, Julie Lythcott-Haims, former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford University, joins Denise Pope, PhD,
Challenge Success co-founder, to discuss material from their new books. Madeline Levine calls Lythcott-Haims’
book, How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Raise Your Kid for Success, “a must-read for every
parent who senses that there is a healthier and saner way to raise our children.” Denise Pope, PhD, co-founder of
Challenge Success, Stanford Graduate School of Education, will soon release a book for parents and educators,
Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids. As a Challenge Success school, MA is featured in several Challenge Success “best-practices” case studies.
Other fall programs include a visit from Maria Furtado, Executive Director of the highly-regarded non-profit Colleges That Change Lives (http://www.ctcl.org/) and Marsha Rosenbaum, PhD, M-A alumna and Director Emerita of
the Drug Policy Alliance. Dr. Rosenbaum’s booklet for parents, Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and
Drugs, is available in seven languages and has been distributed more than 300,000 times around the world. Mark
your calendars now for these great events! 2015-16 Fall Semester:
