WEEKLY MASS SCHEDULE
FROM THE DESK OF
FATHER JOHN TOPEL, S.J….
Merry Christmas!
Since this is my last column before Christmas,
I want to give my Christmas message now.
On Thursday we had our first meeting of our
parish environmental committee. We are
committed to 1) learning more about climate
change and pollution, 2) communicating to
you and to our wider community what we
learn, and 3) reducing our own carbon
footprint.
Central to all of this is our belief that God
created all the aspects of our cosmos out of
love and that it all reflects his intelligence,
goodness, and beauty. That is a conviction we
perhaps share with all theists. But what really
gives us the power to carry all of this into
action is our belief that the Son of God
actually became a physical part of this cosmos
in Jesus of Nazareth. This is a belief unique to
Christianity itself.
And that is what we celebrate this Christmas.
Through his conception and birth as a human
being, “in Him all things [in the cosmos] hold
together.” (Colossians 1:15-20) The world is
renewed, in every aspect, and we ourselves
should be renewed by this faith. It is the
Incarnation of the Son of God in our flesh that
lies at the root of what Pope Francis calls the
joy of the gospel.
“Rejoice! Again I say Rejoice!…The Lord is
near.” (Phil 4:4-5)
Merry Christmas!
Fr. John
