From the Pastor • Del Pastor Dear Parishioners, Queridos Parroquianos: On December 8 we begin the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Through the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis wants every Catholic in the world to be drawn more personally to the merciful love of Jesus Christ. The Year of Mercy will close at the end of the 2016 liturgical year, on November 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King. Year of Mercy at St. Louise Pope Francis has announced an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, beginning December 8, 2015, and continuing through November 20, 2016. This Year of Mercy is a special time of prayer and pilgrimage, a graced opportunity to encounter the mercy of God. Throughout the 2016 year, St. Louise will have several activities and opportunities available for you to share in this extraordinary year of grace and mercy. Stay tuned for more information. Misericordiae Vultus What is a Papal Bull? According to the Vatican press office, "The term bull -from the Latin 'bulla' meaning 'bubble' or, more generally, a rounded object -- originally indicated the metal capsule used to protect the wax seal attached with a cord to a document of particular importance to attest to its authenticity and, as a consequence, its authority. "Over time, the term began to be used first to indicate the seal, then the document itself, so that nowadays it is used for all papal documents of special importance that bear, or at least traditionally would have borne, the pontiff's seal," the statement said. Read Misericordiae Vultus, the Papal Bull, on the Vatican’s dedicated Year of Mercy website, www.im.va. On www.im.va you will find official information regarding the calendar of the major public events, information for participating in the events with the Holy Father, and all of the official communications regarding the Jubilee. How Should we Participate in the Year of Mercy? Pope Francis has written: “It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty…. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead.” In addition, the Year of Mercy is an opportune time to celebrate the sacraments, especially the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Eucharist, to pray, to reflect on the Scriptures (particularly the Gospel of Luke, which we will read throughout the year at Sunday Mass), and to make a pilgrimage and pass through the Doors of Mercy in Rome or closer to home at St. James Cathedral. 4 Download the FREE OSV Year of Mercy App Install the FREE 365 Days to Mercy app! It will inspire and uplift you all year long with Pope Francis’ meditations and tweets, a daily special devotional on mercy, prayers and novenas, and a lot more. The official prayer for the Year of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. Son las señales del camino que indican la proximidad de la liberación que nos trae el Hijo del Hombre, quien vendrá en el último día para rescatar a los suyos.
