Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In our ongoing catechesis on the
family, I wish to reflect on one of
the more dramatic and painful
events that every person, without
exception, has to deal with,
namely, the death of a family
member. Jesus has compassion on
those who mourn, as today’s
Scripture reading reminds us,
because the death of a loved one
is never without pain for families; this is especially
true of parents who lose a child. Jesus’ presence
with the widow at Na’in assures us that he is with us
in our darkest moments and that he is with us in our
loss and mourning. Through faith in him, in his
Resurrection and his abiding presence, we can face
our loss, “the sting of death”, as Saint Paul calls it,
make sense of it, and have confidence that death
does not have the last word. May we, with Christ-like
tenderness and compassion, know how to be close
and offer consolation to families suffering the loss of
a loved one. Above all, may we always be witnesses
to the love which Christ revealed through his cross
and resurrection, a love stronger than death. Let us
also be grateful for our faith in him, which is the only
adequate response to our deepest needs in the face
of the death of a loved one.
The Love of God is Stronger than death itself.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
Hoy deseo reflexionar sobre el luto en la familia por la
pérdida de alguno de sus miembros. Por más que la
muerte forme parte de la vida cotidiana, nunca nos va
parece algo natural. Provoca un dolor desgarrador y un
desconcierto que no sabemos explicar, y hasta a veces
echamos la culpa a Dios. Sin embargo, con la gracia
divina, muchas familias muestran que la muerte no tiene
la última palabra. La fe y el amor que nos unen a quienes
amamos impiden que la partida de este mundo se lo lleve
todo, que nos envenene la vida y nos haga caer en el
vacío.
En esta fe podemos consolarnos unos a otros, sabiendo
que el Señor ha vencido a la muerte de una vez por todas.
Y la esperanza nos asegura que nuestros difuntos están
en las manos fuertes y buenas de Dios. Así, la experiencia
del luto puede ayudar a estrechar aún más los lazos
familiares, a unirnos en dolor con otras familias y en la
esperanza.
Sin negar el derecho al llanto, el sentir la ausencia de uno
de nosotros nos permite también percibir más concreto y
cercano el sacrificio de Cristo, que murió, resucitó y fue
glorificado por el Padre, y su irrevocable promesa de
llevar consigo a todos los suyos a la vida eterna.
El amor de Dios es más fuerte que la muerte.
