DECEMBER 6, 2015
My Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today’s Gospel centers on announcing the ministry of John the Baptist. John calls us to make
ready the way of the Lord, to repent and be baptized, to change our lives. John’s message implies by turning to God and preparing to receive Jesus Christ , we experience a personal conversion and a change in our lives. This is the irst appearance of John the Baptist in this Advent
season and we read how he ful illed prophetic words spoken 600 years earlier about preparing
a way for the Lord, removing barriers between people and God, symbolized by illing in valleys
and laying low mountains and hills. These mountains of Baruch and John the Baptist could represent anything that blocks our awareness of God in our lives. The valleys might represent the
gulf that exists either between ourselves and God, or between ourselves and other people.
This week, Advent and the Jubilee Year of Mercy intersect. Two days from now, in Rome, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (a Holy Day of Obligation), Pope Francis will open the “Holy Door” to signal the opening of the
Jubilee Year of Mercy. The time has come, Pope Francis declares, for the Church to let God’s mercy reawaken us to
new life and instill in us the courage to look to the future with hope, beginning right here, right now.
Mercy opens our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness, and to the recognition of others,
especially society’s least loved and most vulnerable, as brothers and sisters entrusted to our care. Pope Francis wrote
that we need to “go forth” in order to have mercy, especially “to the poor and the sick, those who are usually despised
and overlooked.” Giving and receiving mercy comes down to believing in relationships. Pope Francis has also said
that above all, we must be “ministers of mercy.”
I was reading a book of Daily Re lections, Prayers and Actions, written by Connie Clark for this Advent and came
across this re lection for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The re lection is entitled “Endless Mercy.”
Why do you suppose Pope Francis chose this day to kick off the extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy? Maybe he wants to
remind us that no one- even someone born free of sin- is above performing acts of mercy. Maybe he wants to show
that mercy begins at home, among parents and children. Or maybe because we remember on this day Gabriel’s words
to Mary: “For nothing will be impossible for God.” A world of mercy, forgiveness, peace and goodwill is totally doable. We just need God’s grace. How will you and your family perform acts of mercy this year? How will you rely on
God’s good and gracious mercy in your life?
As this Jubilee Year of Mercy begins, ask yourself: What twists and turns do I need to let God untangle in my life?
What rough edges need to be smoothed out? What mountains of pride do I need to bring low and what valleys of indifference and neglect do I need to ill with mercy for others?
Yours in the Mercy of Christ,
Faithful

SIGNMEUP!
The California Conference of Catholic Bishops have asked us to hold a signature collection drive in
December. This drive is to have the AB X2 15 physician assisted-suicide legislation repealed.
Governor Brown signed it into law last October and the public has 90 days to collect enough signatures for a Veto Referendum on the issue before it becomes the law of the land.
Assisted suicide, in any form, is against our Catholic-Christian teachings and hurts our most vulnerable communities – the poor, the elderly, the frightened and the lonely. Pleasesignthepetitionandsaynotobadlaws.

JUBILEEYEAROFMERCY
December6,2015—SecondSundayofAdvent
This Tuesday, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis will open the
“Holy Door” in Saint Peter’s Basilica, symbolically opening the JubileeYearofMercy. In today’s scriptures, Baruch con idently anticipates God’s healing of the brokenness of humanity, and Paul sees God bringing our discernment, knowledge, and love to ful illment. Our experience of life and of
ourselves can make such prophecies seem wildly optimistic, even hopelessly naı̈ve. Pope Francis challenges us to
live this Jubilee Year as a graced time, when God’s mercy reawakens our enthusiasm to live our baptismal call as
gospel people, our hope renewed and ourselves recommitted to sel less charity. Notice that in Luke’s Gospel today, God bypasses the religious elite and politically powerful to speak to a humble believer in the barren desert
the saving word that will transform history. So God’s mercy continues to accomplish humanity’s salvation in and
through ordinary, lawed, and least likely instruments—even us.

The Kairos Prison Ministry wish to thank St. Catherine of Alexandria’s Parishioners for their prayers and
vigil during our most recent retreat at Calapatria State Prison. We wish to announce to you that twentyseven Men-in-Blue have accepted Our Lord into their lives and are now graduates of the Kairos Prison
Retreat. The twenty-seven Men-in-Blue were given cer ficates of comple on and a chained Cross.
On Sunday, November 15th, they a ended a class for instruc ons to introduce them into a Prayer-andShare group at the prison. The Prayer-and-Share sessions they will be a ending will be weekly on
Wednesdays in the prison chapel conducted by a small group of previous Kairos graduates. In addi on to this, they will meet the
other previous Kairos graduates monthly on the second Sunday of the month at a monthly Kairos graduate’s reunion. Kairos Inside
is an ecumenical con nuing prison ministry, pa erned a er Cursillo, launched with the presenta on of a 3-day retreat in Chris anity. Par cipants are given the opportunity to experience a spiritual renewal and to accept God's call to a life of Chris an witness
and service to one another during their stay in the ins tu on and beyond. Par cipants interact with others who are, or have been
in similar situa ons and thus find strength in their life journeys. Each small group is guided by Kairos team members, two lay persons and one clergy. For many prisoners this small group will be their first experience in a loving family.
Informal surveys indicate that approximately 75% of inmates who graduate from a Kairos short course in Chris anity and remain
ac ve in the follow-up reunions and share and prayer groups will not return to prison. A er the first Kairos Weekend at the Victorville Prison, the significant posi ve change in the behavior of the inmates that a ended the Kairos Weekend was evident to the
prison staff, especially to the warden. The warden was quick to tell the Kairos volunteers something to the effect, "I don't know
exactly what you guys did, but can you put on a Kairos Weekend every month?" The warden then explained that he had never
seen inmates so happy and friendly with each other, especially between ethnic groups that normally did not get along.
One inmate said: “Kairos led me from an intellectual understanding to a loving acceptance of the promises of Chris anity (put Jesus
Christ in my heart). Today Jesus lives in my head and my heart.” When you come into contact with those released from prison,
wouldn’t you want them to be just such a Chris an, a person with a personal rela onship with God?

AÑOJUBILARDELAMISERICORDIA
6dediciembrede2015—SegundoDomingodeAdviento
ordinarios e imperfectos, ¡aú n nosotros mismos!

08 de Noviembre de 2015: Segundo domingo de Adviento
Baruc 5, 1-9 / Salmo 126, 1-6 / Filipenses 1, 4-6, 8-11 / Lucas 3, 1-6
Hch 28, 28). Juan cita a Isaı́as (cfr.
