A Message from Fr. Roberto
Parish theme for this year: Come Follow Me – Ven Sígueme.
Congratulations!
Congratulations to the following parishioners who recently made their Cursillo Retreat: Dana Blobner,
Stephanie Boushey, Joann Freschi, Dominic Freschi, Orlando Figueroa, Juan Gonzalez, Keith Larsen, and
John Schaffner. They came back more excited than ever about their faith! Thanks to those of you who sponsored
them and got them to experience it.
Taken for Granted
This is a great message from Matthew Kelly, the well-known Catholic evangelist:
Nobody likes feeling taken for granted. And yet, we all take people, and things, and opportunities, and even
God for granted from time to time. This month, I would like to issue a gratitude challenge. Every day for the next
30 days, I challenge you to do two things:
Take two minutes to reflect on all you have to be grateful for, and thank God.
Express your gratitude to someone in your life.
Do these two things each day for the next month, and you will be amazed how two, two-minute exercises can have
such a powerful impact on your life and relationships.
Count Your Blessings
During this season of Thanksgiving it is important for us to remind ourselves of our blessings. No matter how tough life is, we can
always find something for which to be grateful – if nothing else, things
could always be worse! So here is an interesting study that expresses
well the kind of gratitude and confidence in God we are called to have,
even in the midst of trials:
The phrase "count your blessings" may sound trite and simplistic, but it can actually make us happier to do so. In a 2003 article –
Counting blessings versus burdens: An experimental investigation of
gratitude and subjective well-being in daily life – in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology psychologists Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough performed an interesting experiment showing this.
http://leacademy.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/gratitude7.jpg
They randomly assigned participants into one of three groups: Gratitude,
Hassles, and Events and asked them to reflect, each week for ten weeks, upon certain aspects of their lives.
In the Gratitude group the reflection prompt was: “There are many things in our lives, both large and small,
that we might be grateful about. Think back over the past week and write down on the lines below up to five things
in your life that you are grateful or thankful for.” Examples of gratitude-inducing experiences listed by the participants were as follows: “waking up this morning,” “the generosity of friends,” “to God for giving me determination,” “for wonderful parents,” “to the Lord for just another day,” and “to the Rolling Stones.”
The Hassles group was given this prompt: “Hassles are irritants—things that annoy or bother you. They
occur in various domains of life, including relationships, work, school, housing, finances, health, and so forth.
Think back over today and, on the lines below, list up to five hassles that occurred in your life.” Examples of hassles listed by participants included: “hard to find parking,” “messy kitchen no one will clean,” “finances depleting
quickly,” “having a horrible test in health psychology,” “stupid people driving,” and “doing a favor for a friend who
didn't appreciate it.”
Finally, the Events group was given the neutral prompt: “What were some of the events or circumstances
that affected you in the past week? Think back over the past week and write down on the lines below the five events
that had an impact on you.”
Following the groups over the ten weeks Emmons and McCullough found that those in the gratitude group,
i.e., those counting their blessings, were significantly happier and healthier than their counterparts and they were
more likely to offer emotional support to others and more likely to have helped someone with a problem. So it
seems that simply counting our blessings can have a profound effect on our life, making us happier, healthier, and more compassionate. (This first reflection was taken from:

Un Mensaje de Padre Roberto
Lema parroquial para este año: Ven Sígueme. Come Follow Me.

School for Pastoral Ministry
Currently renovating its program in light of the
vision of Pope Francis for the New Evangelization, the
courses are newly designed to equip parish ministry
leaders, catechists, parents and all adults to be more
effective in communicating the relevance of the Catholic faith for their lives. A new stable of instructors
models a style of teaching that fosters transformation in
Christ and a missionary outlook focused on witnessing
to God’s mercy within our families, parishes, and the
wider world.
Classes meet one Saturday a month. If you’re
hesitating, “come and see” by auditing a course. And
if you are a graduate of the program, come back and
take a new course or retake one with a new instructor
at half price. Spring 2016 courses are: Old Testament,
Christian Prayer and Spirituality, the Sacraments, and
the Creed: Part I (Trinity, Jesus Christ, and the Cross
Event). Each course
provides 12.5 hours of ongoing adult education.
The fee per course is $120.
