Dear Parents,
As you are well aware, reading is an essential skill. The
fortunate who have learned to read effectively are positively
impacted throughout their lives. As a matter of fact, research
shows that adults with poor literacy skills are ten times more
likely to live in poverty than those who possess strong skills
in literacy. It is with a sense of urgency that we reach out for
your help in encouraging young people to find books that
inspire, serve as journeys of the mind, and offer life lessons.
At McGee, we have teamed with the Berlin-Peck Memorial
Library to continue the important habit of reading during the
summer through the Summer Reading Program.
To ensure that students have the opportunity to interact with
the text from carefully selected literature, they are expected
to complete specific reading and writing assignments, that
can be found in the "Instructions for Students" section of this
brochure. Please note that summer work must be completed
and returned to Integrated Language Arts class on the first
day of school as relevant experiences related to the text are
planned.
McGee students will also participate in the Governor?s
Summer Reading Challenge. Students are required to
document the titles of every book read during the summer
(including the three required for McGee) using Wandoo @
wandooreader.com/berlinpeck/unmask , an online reading
program tracker shared with the Berlin-Peck Memorial
Library. Students will print their Wandoo reading log and
give it to their Reading teachers on the first day of school.
The Berlin-Peck Memorial Library?s online summer reading
program for teens is called ?Unmask.? Students use their
Wandoo accounts, and the reading they log for school counts
toward entries into weekly prize-pack drawings and
challenges as well as a Grand Prize drawing. Events include
Settlers of Catan, Learn to Code for Beginners, Gaming and
more. Details will be available on the library website at
www.berlinpeck.org .
Thank you in advance for your support as it is critical in
reinforcing our expectation that all students participate in
our Summer Reading Program. We wish you a restful summer
and look forward to meeting your children in late August at
McGee and enjoying the summer programs at the Berlin-Peck
Library. You can be assured of engaging learning
experiences.
Sincerely,
Salvatore Urso

GORDON KORMAN BIOGRAPHY
Welcome to the wonderful worldof a regular guy who
just happened to write 80-something books for
kids and teens.
I was born on October 23, 1963 in Montreal,
Canada, and grew up mostly in the Toronto area. My writing career
began virtually by accident when I was in 7th grade. The track and
field coach had to teach English. For creative writing, he gave us
total freedom to work on whatever we wanted for the rest of the
year. It was February. That added up to a class period per day for
more than four months. The result was my first novel, This Can?t Be
Happening at Macdonald Hall. I sent my manuscript to Scholastic
because I was the class monitor for Scholastic Book Orders, and
figured I was practically an employee. Seriously. (Full disclosure: my
mom had to type my book for me.) It was a totally flukey and
random way to launch a publishing career, but here?s the thing: It
worked! This Can?t Be Happening at Macdonald Hall was published
by Scholastic when I was a freshman in high school, and I was on my
way.I?ve been writing for more than three-quarters of my life. My
books have been translated into close to 30 languages and have
sold over 25 million copies worldwide. I have a BFA degree from
New York University with a major in Dramatic Writing and a minor in
Film and TV.
I now live on Long Island, outside New York City, with my wife and
family. When I?m not writing, you can usually find me driving one of
my three kids to some practice or rehearsal or game. Either that, or
I?m on the road, appearing at schools, libraries, and bookstores,
meeting my readers.

one of your f ree-choice books.
1. Find or write a song or poem that relates to the theme of your
book. Perform/ recite it and explain how it relates to the book?s
theme.
2. Draw a comic book page complete with bubble-style
conversations showing an incident in your book. (Comics Head is a
Chrome app that allows you to create comics. ReadWriteThink has a
Comic Creator at
http:/ / www.readwritethink.org/ classroom-resources/
student-interactives/ comic-creator-30021.html
3. Use a journalistic style and write a news story about something
that happened to one of the characters. (ReadWriteThink?s Printing
Press will make it look like a story in a newspaper,

4. Make a poster advertising your book. (ReadWriteThink?s Printing

http:/ / www.jukeboxprint.com/ editor/ poster_creator.php. A free
Chrome app that includes poster creation is LucidPress Layout and
Design.)
5. Make a travel brochure inviting tourists to visit the setting of the
book. What types of activities would there be for them to attend?
(Smore at https:/ / www.smore.com is a free on-line site for making
flyers. Use ReadWriteThink?s Printing Press to make brochures and

6. Create a radio ad for your book. Write out a script and make an
audio recording with background music. (Audacity is a free

7. Make a video about your book. (The Google App WeVideo is a

Editor is also free.) Choose from the following:
- Become an "on-the-scene" news reporter and create a field
report on a major scene from the book.
- Create a video diary (like the "confessionals" on reality shows)
from the perspective of a dynamic character in the book.
Provide the characters thoughts about the main conflicts in the
story.
- Become a movie director / producer and re-create at least one
scene that shows a major part of the story.
8. Design a movie poster for the book that you read. Cast the major
characters in the book with real actors and actresses. Remember, it
should be PERSUASIVE; you want people to come see the movie. (A
free Chrome app that includes poster creation is LucidPress Layout
and Design. Jukebox has a free on-line poster creator at
http:/ / www.jukeboxprint.com/ editor/ poster_creator.php .
9. Create a movie trailer for your book. (The Google App WeVideo is
a free movie--making app. The Chrome app Magisto - Magical Video
Editor is also free. Animoto is good, but no longer free for longer
videos.)
