The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be available during this Mass for every baptized Catholic over the age of reason. Prayer teams will also be available immediately after Mass to pray with people for healing and other needs. Anointing of the sick primarily is for spiritual healing. Physical healing might occur, but it is not the main purpose of the sacrament. Certainly the sacrament should not be expected to automatically cure the sick person. Such an expectation tends toward superstition (cf. CC2111). Baptized children below the age of reason cannot commit personal sin and so do not need anointing of the sick if they are in danger of death. Rather, when in danger of death, such children can be given confirmation, for spiritual strengthening and more fully to initiate them into the Christian religion. Veterans Day Tuesday, November 10 Dear Lord: Today we honor our veterans, worthy men and women who gave their best when they were called upon to serve and protect their country. We pray that you will bless them, Lord, for their unselfish service in the continual struggle to preserve our freedom, our safety, and our country’s heritage, for all of us. Bless them abundantly for the hardships they faced, for the sacrifices they made, for their many different contributions to America’s victories over tyranny and oppression. We respect them, we thank them, we honor them, we are proud of them, and we pray that you will watch over these special people and bless them with peace and happiness. In Jesus’ name we pray – Amen. Richard & Debbie Composto Edna Coronado Bill & April Meditz Several years ago Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and then the 2nd richest man in the world, after Bill Gates, announced that he planned to give away the bulk of his fortune to charity. Buffet’s gift of about 30 billion dollars was the largest act of charitable giving in the history of the United States. The press went wild and for days it was the lead story in the news. But after a week or so the news got old and the world moved on to other newsworthy stories. Holy Trinity Writers will meet Monday, November 9, at 7pm in Room 201. Here we are 2000 years later still pondering the widow’s donation to the temple. Why? Because this nameless widow gave a gift of overwhelming generosity. It had little monetary value but it represented total sacrifice. She gave God everything she had. The poor widow was blessed because she placed herself in the hands of God. Yes, Warren Buffet is a very generous man. But his gift did not disadvantage him. He will never go to bed hungry. He will never be homeless. His children will always be comfortable. He gave a lot but the widow gave it all. “For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that for your sake he became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8: 9. God with the heart of a father and a mother, you care for the poor, give justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. In your Son Jesus you have shown us how to give not from our surplus but ourselves. Confound our calculations and change our self-interest into generous sharing, so that our way of giving may become like yours, not counting the cost. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
