PARISH Mission Statement
We, the family of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Parish, are called by virtue of our baptism and guided by the Holy Spirit to be
disciples of Jesus. As disciples of Jesus,
we are dedicated to foster the growth of
God’s Kingdom on earth by praising
God and living the Gospel values of love,
justice, forgiveness and service to all.
FAITH DIRECT
- E– GIVING
St. Rose of Lima Parish will be offering a new way of E-Giving coming soon! Faith Direct is a company dealing only with
Catholic Churches across the Country! Be Ready, there will be informative mailings to those already on our VANCO Program.
Please note that VANCO will be ending October 1st, 2015. We will begin a campaign of “Informative Articles” beginning with
this bulletin. For those wishing to begin E-Giving, please stay tuned for more information! This is a much easier program!!!!
This month we are introducing a new and exciting way for you to support our parish offertory and second collections: FAITH DIRECT:
Faith Direct enables parishioners to make your Church contributions through either direct debit from your checking/savings account or
through your credit/debit card. No more writing checks or searching for envelopes on the way out the door. Now you can apply the convenience of direct debit to your parish offerings in much the same way as you may now use it to make your mortgage, car or tuition payments.
Faith Direct also offers you personalized offertory cards to replace your envelopes for the collection basket.
Please join in enrolling by responding to the mailing you may have received, or you may go on line and visit
Www.faithdirect.net to enroll securely on line. Our Parish Code is CA701.
“eGiving through Faith Direct “ The Faith Direct program gives you:
• A convenient and consistent way to support St. Rose of Lima by electing to use direct debit from your
bank or credit card acct.
• The opportunity to support our parish even if you are absent from Mass for travel or illness.
• A solution to a situation I know many families face on their way to Mass: where did I put my envelopes?!
With the support of the parish finance council, we have selected the Faith Direct program for many reasons, including:
• For 10 years, Faith Direct has worked with hundreds of Catholic parishes throughout the United States and is recognized as the
leading eGiving program.
• Faith Direct provides the critical third party security needed for this new way of parish support: this limits the liability for our parish
and keeps your information in secure hands.
How does it work?
• You can visit faithdirect.net and enroll securely online
• For those of you who would not be comfortable going online, you can still enroll in this program by completing an enrollment form
• For those of you who had been giving through Parish Pay, you will receive instructions in the mail and via email on how to access
your new Faith Direct account.
• You can elect to have your specified bank or credit card account debited on either the 4th or 15th of the month for both offertory and any
second collections you support.
• Parishioners can elect to receive “offertory cards” in lieu of envelopes to be placed in the collection basket.
A few other considerations:
Many of you have requested we put this type of program in place: I have complete confidence in Faith Direct and will be enrolling myself.
• As a parish, we can collectively go “green” by eliminating the many wasteful envelopes that go unused.
• There is no charge to parishioners for enrolling. In fact, every family signing up with Faith Direct means one less package of envelopes to print and mail out – and that will mean savings for St. Rose of Lima, which we can use to further expand our ministries
throughout our community.
• We consider Faith Direct to be a “win-win” program for both parishioners and our parish. I strongly encourage you to enroll in this
program today. I am grateful for your financial and prayerful support of our parish.
Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle B August 16, 2015
First Reading
Proverbs 9:1-6
Wisdom has set a feast before us.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 34:2-3,4-5,6-7
A prayer of praise to God for his goodness
www.loyolapress.com
Second Reading
Ephesians 5:15-20
Filled with the Spirit, Christians strive
to follow the will of the Lord.
Gospel Reading
John 6:51-58
Jesus teaches that whoever eats his flesh and drinks his blood will live forever.
Family Connection
Our faith teaches us that when we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, Jesus himself is present to us.
Through the actions of the Mass, the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Christ. This is
what we mean by the word transubstantiation. Jesus makes himself present to all who receive the Body
and Blood of Christ.
If there are children in your family who have already celebrated their First Communion, invite them to share
their memories of this special day. If you have family photos from this occasion, bring them out and share
them. Adults in the family may also share memories or photos of their First Communion. Then read together today's Gospel, John 6:51-58. Reflect together on what Jesus means when he calls himself the
“living bread.” Recall that every time we receive the Eucharist, Jesus keeps the promise he made in today's
Gospel. Perhaps family members can share what it means for them to receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Together, thank God for this gift of Holy Communion. Pray together the Lord's Prayer or today's psalm.
Making the Connection:
We observe in our culture an interest in prolonging human life and in seeking immortality. We can teach you that
Jesus promised us eternal life—not an extension of our earthly existence, but a life with God forever.
Preparation for Sunday Scripture Readings
1. There are people who expend a lot of time and energy trying to prolong their life. Why do you think
people want to live for a long time? Do you think it would be a good thing to live forever? Why or why
not? (all reasonable answers.)
2. Jesus talks about the gift of eternal life in today's Gospel. By this, he didn't mean that we would live
forever as we do now. Let's listen to this Gospel and talk about what Jesus meant when he promised
us the gift of eternal life.
3. Invite a volunteer to read aloud today's Gospel, John 6:51-58.
4. What does Jesus say one must do to live forever? (Eat the bread that he will give.) What does Jesus
say about this bread that will give eternal life? (It comes from heaven; it is Jesus' flesh given for the life of
the world.) What will this bread do for those who eat it? (It will bring them eternal life; Jesus will come to
live in those who eat this bread.) What do you think Jesus is talking about? (the Eucharist)
5. In today's reading, Jesus is telling us about the special gift he gives us in the Eucharist. In the
Eucharist, the bread and the wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. When we share in the Eucharist, Jesus makes himself one with us. This is what eternal life means, being with God and Jesus forever.
6. Conclude in prayer thanking God for the gift of the Eucharist. Pray the Lord's Prayer or today's psalm.
This Week’s Liturgy August 16, 2015
Reading 1 Proverbs 9:1-6
How does God attract people to seek divine wisdom? In
this reading, the wisdom of God is pictured as a welcoming woman who invites people to "Come, eat of my
food." Those who accept her invitation will grow in their
understanding of God's ways. Once they have shared her
feast, they will no longer be misled by foolishness.
The wise of any age are those who live by the word of
God and attract others to do likewise.
Reading 2 Reflection Ephesians 5:15-20
In this reading, Paul shows that he has eaten of Wisdom's food. He strongly advises his fellow Christians
not to waste their opportunities to live well. They are
to act thoughtfully and avoid ignorant behavior, including drunkenness and wickedness of every kind.
To strengthen their decision to live wisely, Paul encourages them to sing inspired songs and thank God
for everything they have received from him. We share
this same call to grow in wisdom and in gratitude.
Gospel John 6:51-58 Gospel Reflection
Once again Jesus the Teacher is having a hard time getting
through to his listeners. They resist his teaching that he is the
living bread from heaven. When they continue to object, Jesus
assures them that his flesh is real food and his blood is real
drink. If they do not "feed on" him, they will have no life in
them. We are blessed because we can share the Living Bread
at every Eucharist. As we satisfy our spiritual hunger, we remember those who hunger for food, shelter, friendship, or
faith. We consider how we can respond to the hungers of the
world.

Discussion Questions for Reading 1
What do you think might be the difference between
seeking wisdom and seeking knowledge? How might
we recognize someone who is foolish in God's eyes?
Describe a person you know who is wise. How do you
think this person has become wise?
What are some of the ways in which people your age
can say yes to Wisdom's invitation, "Come, eat of my
food?"
Discussion Questions for Reading 2
What signs of foolish conduct have you seen on TV or
in movies? What are some of the consequences of foolish, ignorant, or even wicked behavior? Describe any
characters you have met in movies or books whose behavior is wise. In the history of the Church, there have
been countless people who showed that they were wise
and filled with the Holy Spirit. Who is your favorite
wise person in the Church, past or present? Explain
your choice.
Discussion Questions for Gospel
What do you remember about your First Communion?
Why was that day special to you and your family? How do
you think receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus makes a
difference in your life? What do you think are some of the
spiritual hungers of people your age in the world today?
In what ways has your school or parish responded to the
hungry? Name three ways you can help those who hunger
for faith or friendship.
Pope Francis Speaks Excerpted from The Joy of the Gospel
I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or
at least an openness to letting him encounter them: I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one
should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by
the Lord.” The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk: whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we
come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms.
Now is the time to say to Jesus: “Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways I have shunned your
love, yet here I am once more, to renew my covenant with you. I need you . Save me once again, Lord, take me
once more into your redeeming embrace.” How good it feels to come back to him whenever we are lost! Let me
say this once more: God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy. Christ, who
told us to forgive one another “seventy times seven” (Mt 18:22) has given us his example: he has forgiven us
seventy times seven. Time and time again he bears us on his shoulders.
No one can strip us of the dignity bestowed upon us by this boundless and unfailing love. With a tenderness
which never disappoints, but is always capable of restoring our joy, he makes it possible for us to lift up our
heads and to start anew. Let us not flee from the resurrection of Jesus, let us never give up, come what will.
May nothing inspire more than his life, which impels us onwards!

Gracias.

A LA MESA
En la primera lectura de hoy, la sabiduría se presenta como una mujer rica en aplomo y gracia. Se mueve fácilmente y con confianza en
torno a su templo-hogar. No anda mariposeando, nerviosa y preocupada.
