Mrs. Sarah Miller, a parent at St. Michaels, is one of the
talented librarians from the
Gaston County Public
Library. She took some time
out of her day to share story
time with PreK-3 and PreK4. She read a few funny, fallthemed stories and we even
got up and danced a little in
between each story. Not
only was it a wonderful way to participate
in community outreach, but it was also an invitation to
get the students interested in going to the public library
and fall in love with reading! We can't wait for Mrs.
Miller to come back again soon!
←On October 20, 2015 investigators with the Gaston
County
Police Department Special Investigations Unit presented a program to all St. Michael’s Middle School students on the dangers
of drugs. The program was led by Gaston County Police Captain
W.S. “Bill” Melton, Jr., a St. Michael’s parishioner, and covered
the various drug types and their consequences. Students had an
opportunity to role play, discuss handling peer pressure and strategies on how to say "no to drugs". Captain Melton framed his
portion of the presentation from a Catholic Catechetical perspective.

Thanks to PSNC Energy, St. Michael’s
3rd through 5th graders enjoyed the talents and lessons
from actors of the National Theatre for Children as they
presented the Energy Trek Program. The live performance was fun and engaging, and taught the concepts
of origin, usage, conservation, and safety of natural gas.

Grade Math Night: Mrs. Pruitt’s second graders were challenged
during an annual Math Night on Tuesday, October 27th. Mrs. Pruitt has
organized this event at SMCS for 16 consecutive years. The evening was
kicked off with a delicious spaghetti dinner….then everyone participated in
more than 25 games and projects. The variety of math games involved using
skills in estimation, counting, addition, subtraction, measuring, and
tangrams. As always, it was a fun and memorable night that the second
graders will never forget.

minutes just before and after Mass once a
month – you choose the day and Mass
time! This small time commitment reaps
big rewards! As a Greeter, you are the
first person to connect with our visitors
and parishioners as they arrive for and
leave Holy Mass. Training will be provided. Responsibilities include:
 Greet attendees as they arrive & help
visitors who may be unfamiliar with the
Church.
 Help direct anyone to the various after
Mass volunteer activities or sign-ups.
Provide prospective members with the
new member sign up forms and introduce
them to the Pastor, Deacon or other parish
leaders.

Trust in the Lord
This talk is practical. It is for everyone-beginners and
masters in the spiritual life. We all know that growth in
holiness is largely about growing in trust in our Lord Jesus Christ. But how does one do that realistically? In this
talk, Bismarck Diocese Vocations Director Fr. Tom Richter
will describe in concrete terms what the interior act of
trust looks like, and what we must choose in order to
grow in trust.
Beyond Belief: Following Christ Today
Fr. Mike Schmitz tackles some of the most difficult topics
in the Church today with humor, clarity, and theological
truth. In this talk, he challenges us to not settle for mediocrity and to allow Christ to change our lives. Fr. Mike
goes on to explain that once we are changed by the love of
Jesus, then together we can change the world.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Start Thinking About the Holidays
 During the month October the Thrift Store and
the Food Pantry assisted 344 adults and 59 children with food and clothing. The “St Vincent
de Paul” office assisted 24 households with
utility assistance.
 It’s not too early to begin bringing in those
new or very gently used items for the Secret
Santa shop the Thrift Store offers to low income children each year. Children’s and adult
gifts. Angel Tree - We will accept names for
our annual Giving Angel Tree November 3
through 12. If you, or someone you know,
needs assistance with toys for children, call the
parish office for an appointment.
 Now that is is turning cold the Thrift Store
needs those warm blankets and coats you are
no longer using. Bring directly to the store
Tuesday thru Saturday.

the Priests’ Retirement and Benefits Collection. We
are grateful for your generosity. Our assessment is
$22,700. Those who were unable to give during
September may still put a contribution in the regular collection any time. There are additional envelopes available in the vestibule for those who did
not receive one in the mail.

The collection box inside the Church is ONLY for
box tops . We don't collect Tyson labels or Campbell soup labels, so we ask parishioners not to place
those in the box, and parents shouldn't sent these

generosidad cuando es por interés, esperando recibir algo a
cambio?
Oración introductoria
Espíritu Santo, ilumina esta oración para que no la
convierta en un momento de vanidad, autocomplacencia o
en un ritual sin sentido, como acostumbraban los fariseos.
Dame la fortaleza para saber desprenderme de lo que me
impida crecer en el amor.
Petición
Señor, dame la gracia de ser generoso, sin cálculos
egoístas.
Meditación del Papa Francisco
La fe no necesita aparentar, sino ser. No necesita ser
alimentada por cortesías, especialmente si son hipócritas,
sino por un corazón capaz de amar de forma genuina. Jesús
condena este tipo de seguridad centrada en el
cumplimiento de la ley.
Jesús condena esta espiritualidad de cosmética, aparentar
lo bueno, lo bello, ¡pero la verdad por dentro es otra cosa!
Jesús condena a las personas de buenas maneras pero de
malas costumbres, esas costumbres que no se ven pero se
hacen a escondidas. Pero la apariencia es justa: esta gente a
la que le gustaba pasearse en las plazas, hacerse ver
rezando, 'maquillarse' con un poco de debilidad cuando
ayunaban... ¿Por qué el Señor es así? Vean que son dos los
adjetivos que usa aquí, pero unidos: avaricia y maldad.

Jesús nos aconseja esto: no tocar la trompeta. El segundo
consejo que nos da: no dar solamente lo que nos sobra. Y
nos habla de esa viejecita que ha dado todo lo que tenía
para vivir. Y alaba a esa mujer por haber hecho esto. Y lo
hace de una forma un poco escondida, quizá porque se
avergonzaba de no poder dar más. (Cf Homilía de S.S.

Reflexión
"Dar" es la acción del generoso. Dar una limosna, por
ejemplo, en el campo material. Pero también dar de mi
tiempo, compartir mis conocimientos con los demás o
contagiar mi alegría con una sonrisa son manifestaciones
de esta virtud.
Hay muchas maneras de "dar", y muchas motivaciones
para nuestra donación. ¿Se puede hablar de generosidad
cuando lo hacemos por interés, esperando recibir algo a
cambio? Tampoco es generoso quien da, pero sólo un poco
de lo mucho que podría, como nos muestra el Evangelio.
¿Y qué decir de quien "es generoso" para que los demás
digan: "qué bueno es..."?
Madre Teresa dijo (y vivió, por supuesto) que hay que
"amar hasta que nos duela". ¡Ya tenemos un buen
termómetro para saber si somos realmente generosos! Si
mi donación es costosa, voy por buen camino. Si no me
exige sacrificio alguno, es seguro que puedo dar mucho
más. Y este "dar" se identifica con la generosidad cuando
se hace pensando en el bien del otro, cuando se da por
amor.

Ser especialmente generoso en mi ofrenda en la limosna de
la misa de hoy o de mañana domingo.
Diálogo con Cristo
Jesús, dame tu gracia para
transformar mi espíritu en la
generosidad para vivir en una
constante preocupación por
tus intereses y por las

servicio y caridad, sin buscar

¿Y si hoy fuera el último día de mi vida?
La muerte compañera de vida I
Hay una fecha en el calendario, que sólo Dios conoce, no la conocemos nosotros. La muerte no
avisa, simplemente llega.
No pretendemos asustar a nadie, al hablar de la muerte. Vamos a considerarla como maestra de
vida, vamos a decirle que nos enseñe a vivir. Será una maestra severa, pero nos dice la verdad.
Aunque sólo fuera para que no nos ocurra aquello de: ¨cuando pude cambiar todo, arreglar todo, no
quise hacerlo; y, ahora que quiero, ya no puedo”.
Vivir como si fuera hoy el último día de mi vida, es una fantástica forma de vivir. A la luz de este último día debiéramos analizar
todas las decisiones grandes y pequeñas de la vida. Ahora nos engañamos, hacemos cosas que no nos perdonaremos a la hora de la
muerte. Simplemente analiza esto: Si hoy fuera el último día; ¿qué pensarías de muchas cosas que has hecho hasta el día de hoy?
En ese último día pensarás de una forma tan radicalmente distinta del mundo, de Dios, de la eternidad, de los valores de esta vida.
Si nosotros no pensamos en la muerte, ella sí piensa en nosotros. Dios nos ha dado a cada uno un cierto número de años, y, desde
el día que nacemos, comienza a caminar el reloj de nuestra vida, el que va a contar uno tras otro todos los días, el que se parará el
último día, el de nuestra muerte. Este reloj está caminando en este momento. ¿Me encuentro en el comienzo, a la mitad, cerca del
final? ¿Quizá he recorrido ya la mitad del camino?
Si alguna vez he visto morir a una persona, debo pensar que por ese trance tengo que pasar yo también. La muerte no respeta
categorías de personas: mueren los reyes, los jefes de estado, los jóvenes, los ricos y los pobres. Como decía hermosamente el
poeta latino Horacio: “La muerte golpea con el mismo pie las chozas de los pobres y los palacios de los ricos”.
Hay una fecha en el calendario, que sólo Dios conoce, no la conocemos nosotros. La muerte no avisa, simplemente llega. Podemos
morir en la cama, en la carretera, de una enfermedad..., algunos hemos tenido accidentes serios; pudimos habernos quedado ahí.
La muerte sorprende como ladrón, según la comparación puesta por el mismo Cristo hablando de la muerte. No es que nos
pongamos pesimistas. Él quería que estuviéramos siempre preparados. Sus palabras exactas son: “Vigilad, porque no sabéis el día
ni la hora; a la hora que menos penséis, vendrá el Hijo del Hombre”. El ladrón no pasa normalmente tarjeta de visita; llega cuando
menos se piensa. Nadie de nosotros tenemos escrito en nuestra agenda: “Tal día es la fecha de mi muerte y la semana anterior debo
arreglar todos mis asuntos, despedirme de mis familiares, para morir cristianamente”.
Si somos jóvenes, estamos convencidos de que no moriremos en la juventud; nos sentimos con un gran optimismo vital: “No niego
que voy a morir algún día, pero ese día está muy lejano”. Si es uno mayor, suele contestar: “Me siento muy bien”.
La experiencia nos demuestra que cada día mueren en el mundo alrededor de 200 mil personas. Entre ellos hay hombres y mujeres,
jóvenes y viejos, y muchos niños. Ningún momento más inoportuno para la cita con la muerte que un viaje de bodas; y, sin
embargo, varios han muerto así. Con 20 años en el corazón parece imposible morir, y sin embargo, se muere también a los 20 años.
Recuerdo una persona que sacó su boleto de México a Monterrey y sólo caminó 15 kms.
Puesto que hemos de morir sin remedio, no luchemos contra la muerte sino a favor de la vida. Si hemos de morir, que sea de amor
y no de hastío.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Baptisms are held at 2 pm on Saturdays. Baptism is the
most important moment of our life. Infants should be baptized in the first few weeks. Parents AND godparents must
attend the preparation class (held every 2nd Saturday)
preferably before the child is born. Parents need to be
registered in the parish, pledge to raise the child as a practicing Catholic, and must also be practicing the faith by
attending Holy Mass every Sunday. Godparents are considered Catholic role models. Therefore, they must have
received all sacraments, including Confirmation, and must
be attending Holy Mass every Sunday. If they are married,
they must have received the sacrament of Holy Matrimony
in the Catholic Church. Please come to the parish office to
register for the class and bring a copy of the child’s birth
certificate when it becomes available.
SACRAMENT OF HOLY MATRIMONY
Couples should make an appointment with the priest at
the time of engagement, and at least six months before
any proposed wedding date to begin preparations. All
Weddings are celebrated inside the Church on Saturday at
10 AM or 12 pm.
