The new address is: La Habra Life Center 860 E. La Habra Blvd # 150 La Habra, CA 90631 (Entrance from Valencia, close to Harbor) 562-691-9395 Thank you for your continued support and prayers for mothers and children during difficult pregnancies. Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir For the Third Sunday of Advent, the Gloria Deo Choir sings our third excerpt from G.F. Handel’s celebrated oratorio Messiah. The chorus “O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion” immediately follows an alto aria using the same prophetic text from Isaiah Chapter 40: O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, arise; Say unto to the cities of Judah: Behold you God! Behold, the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. This brief but engaging chorus is densely packed with lively melodic motives and a dancelike 6/8 meter. After Communion, the choir and a trio of soloists will sing Purcell’s anthem “Rejoice in the Lord Alway.” The original version runs about 9 minutes in length, so we’ve instituted some judicious cuts. The text is drawn from Philippians 4:4-7: Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ our Lord. —Kevin St. Clair, Interim Director Gloria Dei Choir Page 7 Jubilee Year of Mercy Third Sunday of Advent Pope Francis chose to inaugurate the Jubilee Year of Mercy last Tuesday because December 8 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of Vatican II. That council, Pope Francis reminds us, inaugurated a new phase in the Church’s history. The Spirit called the Church to tear down the walls that for far too long had made it a fortress, and to proclaim the gospel in a new, more accessible way. Pope Francis quotes Saint John XXIII in declaring the Church’s preference for “the medicine of mercy,” and Blessed Paul VI in proposing the Good Samaritan as our model for discipleship (Misericordiae Vultus, 4). Pope Francis adds that God’s mercy is “the beating heart of the Gospel,” and that mercy “must penetrate the heart and mind” of every disciple (MV, 12). Three times today’s Gospel asks, “What should I do?” Pope Francis would say: Imitate Jesus, who came not wielding the fiery judgment that John the Baptist had threatened, but instead imparting healing, compassion, forgiveness—mercy! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Christmas Gifts, Décor and More The St. Paul Mission Circle Gift Shop is offering a variety of nativity sets, ornaments, Christmas cards, and gift items. We have many ways to keep Christ in Christmas. Bonus: All proceeds benefit the 8 missionaries that we support. The Gift Shop is located off the vestibule of the church, inside the northeast entrance and is open after Saturday evening and Sunday morning Masses. Armory Emergency Shelter Program Once again we have a great opportunity to serve other people in our community. Mercy House is looking for volunteers to help staff the Fullerton Armory Cold Weather Shelter. This program provides shelter to 150 homeless men, women and children per night with a nutritious meal, a warm shower, a safe place to sleep, warm clothes, outreach services and a friendly atmosphere at the National Guard Armory in Fullerton. People are challenged to be authentic and accountable about what’s really going on in their lives in a safe and supportive place. At OLG Small Groups, we share life, build relationships and pray together. Join us. Contact: Nick Rawe [email protected] or Dave da Rosa (714) 7888648. Helping Hands Are Needed!
