A Message from Principal King
Calendar Highlights
As we look forward to next semester, I want to
impress upon the parents and guardians to bring your
child to school every day. We have many great
initiatives we will begin that will assist our struggling
learners as well as challenge our stronger learners to
excel. Therefore, your child’s attendance is critical for
their academic success! If your child misses a day of
school, we cannot do what is necessary to intervene
and/or enrich educationally. While we want you to
keep your daughter/son home when she/he has a
fever and/or is vomiting, we need them here every
day they are well. Please make sure to contact the
school when you keep your daughter/son home, so
we can make note of it appropriately in attendance.
November and December were busy months of “firsts” for the students and
staff at Neal Math and Science Academy. We took a hard look at student data
as a community, and then worked together to come up with strategies to best
meet the academic needs of our students during our first Parents 4 Student
Success events. We also celebrated the wonderful gift of community during
our first “Thanks for Giving” feast. We had close to 300 parents, children, and
friends attend this beautiful event hosted by our Parent Teacher
Organization. We wrapped up December with a second round of AIMSweb
testing and are happy to see such significant academic gains from our
students. We then held a huge school-wide celebration of students who
worked hard to earn all passing grades in their classes and displayed
outstanding behavior!
We will take the next round of NWEA Measure of
Academic Progress assessments in early January;
please make sure your student comes to school every
day and does their best on these. For our 8th grader
students, this information will be used to place
students in courses at the high school. For the rest of
the students, we will use the information to develop
online pathways for learning within their classroom,
so we can target their specific academic needs.

Al mirar hacia adelante al próximo semestre, quiero
animar a los padres y tutores a traer a sus hijos a la
escuela todos los días. Tenemos varias iniciativas que
comenzaremos muy pronto que ayudarán a nuestros
estudiantes con dificultades, así como desafiar a
nuestros estudiantes más avanzados a sobresalir. Por
lo tanto, ¡la asistencia de su hijo es fundamental para
su éxito académico! Si su hijo pierde un día de
escuela, no podemos hacer lo que es necesario para
intervenir
y/o
enriquecerlo
educativamente.
Obviamente, queremos que mantenga a su hijo/a en
casa cuando él/ella tenga fiebre o vómitos, pero
tienen que estar en la escuela cada día que estén
bien. Si su hijo/a se queda en casa, por favor
asegúrese de ponerse en contacto con la escuela para
que podamos hacer nota de manera adecuada en la
asistencia.
Tomaremos la siguiente ronda de evaluaciones de
NWEA para el Progreso Académico a principios de
enero. Por favor asegúrese de que su estudiante
venga a la escuela todos los días y haga su mayor
esfuerzo en estos examenes. Para nuestros
estudiantes del octavo grado, esta información será
utilizada para colocarlos en los cursos que tomaran en
la escuela secundaria. Para el resto de los estudiantes,

Enfoque del Calendario
Noviembre y diciembre fueron meses llenos de "primeras veces" para los
estudiantes y para el personal de Neal Math and Science Academy.
Observamos arduamente los datos de los alumnos como una comunidad, y
luego trabajamos juntos para idear estrategias para satisfacer mejor las
necesidades académicas de nuestros estudiantes durante nuestro primer
evento titulado “Padres para el Éxito Estudiantil”. También celebramos el
maravilloso don de la comunidad durante nuestra primera fiesta titulada
"Gracias por dar”. Tuvimos cerca de 300 padres, hijos, y amigos que asistieron
a este hermoso evento organizado por nuestra Organización de Padres y
Maestros. Terminamos el mes de diciembre con una segunda ronda de
examenes AIMSweb y estamos felices de ver logros académicos significativos
en nuestros estudiantes. Luego, facilitamos una gran celebración escolar para

Seventh Grade Spotlight
In 7th grade, where "we do the right thing because we can..." students are
working hard to set goals and push our thinking so we can reach new limits.
We have a morning meeting daily, where we set the tone for the day with a
positive message and a behavioral goal. Students were given PowerSchool
access to be accountable for monitoring their grades. They have been taking
initiative by attending tutoring both before and after school. On Friday
December 19th, we had over 40 students participate in the school wide
incentive "Exercise Your Mind" and over 100 students participate in "7th
Grade Incentive Day". In the upcoming year we have many opportunities for
students planned to earn incentives
Enfoque del Septimo Grado
En séptimo grado, donde "hacemos lo correcto porque podemos …", los
estudiantes están trabajando duro para establecer metas e impulsar sus
pensamiento para que puedan llegar a nuevos límites. Tenemos una reunión
en la mañana todos los días, donde establecemos el tono para el día con un
mensaje positivo y un objetivo conductual. Los estudiantes tuvieron acceso al
programa “PowerSchool” para que esten al tanto de sus calificaciones. Ellos
han estado tomando la iniciativa asistiendo a tutorías, tanto antes como
después de la escuela. El viernes 19 de diciembre, tuvimos más de 40
estudiantes que participaron en el gran incentivo de la escuela titulado
"Ejercita tu mente" y más de 100 estudiantes participaron en el "Día de
Incentivo para el Séptimo Grado". En el próximo año tenemos muchas
oportunidades para que los estudiantes ganen mas incentivos.
DISTRICT-WIDE UPDATES
A Message from Dr. Ben Martindale, CEO
Welcome back to the second half of the 2014-2015 school year. We are excited about
what opportunities are before us for our students during these next five months of
school. Since our last newsletter there have been many exciting and positive
occurrences that have happened. Last week we received notice from the Illinois State
Board of Education that they will appropriate in their 2016 State Board budget special
financial assistance for District 187. If the legislature provides the state funding for this
request it will allow us to add some critical instructional support at our schools along
with the acquisition of new materials in science and social studies.
We also received notification last week that District 187 will be the recipient of a
portion of the Federal grant awarded to Illinois to expand early childhood education
services. We are expected to receive almost $900,000 a year for each of four years to
expand our early education services for full day pre-school for all four-year-old
children. We are the only school district in Lake County to receive a portion of this
federal funding.

Bienvenidos a la segunda mitad del ano escolar 2014-2015. Estamos ansiosos de las
oportunidades que están ante nosotros y nuestros estudiantes durante estos próximos
cinco meses de la escuela. Desde nuestro ultimo boletín, ha habido muchos sucesos
entusiasmantes y positivos. La semana pasada recibimos noticia de la Junta Estatal de
Educación de Illinois que encontraran en su presupuesto, fondos especialmente para
asistencia en el Distrito 187. Si la legislación provee los fondos al estado para esta
petición, nos permitirá agregar apoyo en la instrucción muy necesaria en nuestras
escuelas aparte de adquisición de nuevos utensilios en ciencia y estudios sociales.
Además , la semana pasada recibimos notificación que el distrito 187 será recipiente
de una porción de la beca Federal presentada a Illinois para expandir servicios de
educación temprana. Esperamos recibir casi $900,000 por año, por cada cuatro años,
para expandir nuestros servicios de educación temprana en pre-kínder a todo el día

Update on Curriculum and Instruction

The first half of the 2014-2015 school year has been full of hard work for students,
teachers, principals, and families in North Chicago District 187! In our district, we say
that we are “On the Move Toward Excellence,” and our students have shown their
commitment to this vision - we are proud of how much all of our students have learned
and grown this fall. This spring, we will be taking the PARCC assessment for the first
time, and for the first time we will have a state test that shows us where our students
are in comparison with their peers all across the country. With lots of hard work
between now and March, when we take the PARCC, we are confident that our students
will show that they are great critical thinkers and solve problems, ready to meet the
challenges that the future holds. Look for more information about PARCC and the New

!La primera mitad del ano escolar 2014-2015 ha estado lleno de duro trabajo para
estudiantes, directores, y familias en el Distrito 187 de North Chicago! En nuestro
distrito, decimos que estamos “En camino a la Excelencia,” y nuestros estudiantes han
demostrado su compromiso a esta resolución. Estamos orgullosos de cuanto han
crecido y aprendido todos nuestros estudiantes este otoño. Esta primavera, por
primera vez estaremos tomando la evaluación PARCC, y por primera vez tendremos un
examen del estado que nos mostrara donde se encuentran nuestros estudiantes en
comparación con sus compañeros en todo el país. Con mucho duro trabajo desde ahora
hasta Marzo cuando tomemos el examen PARCC, tenemos la confianza que nuestros
estudiantes demostraran que son pensadores críticos excelentes, y solucionan
problemas listos para enfrentarse a retos que se les presente en el futuro. Vea mas

Response to Intervention

Response to Intervention (RtI) is a multilevel approach to identifying and
supporting students with learning and
behavior needs. This year, CUSD 187
established a RtI Steering Committee, with
the goal of planning and implementing a
district-wide system for student support.
The RtI Steering Committee was charged
with improving Tier 1 initiatives, including
high-quality
classroom
instruction,
screening, and group interventions, during
the 2014-2015 school year. As part of its
work, the Committee created a summary
booklet which outlines the tiered approach
to supporting all students and provides
instructional guidelines and assessment
practices. In August, the booklet was
reviewed by all district instructional staff
members at a training designed to build a
common understanding of the RtI
Framework, as it relates to the District
Improvement Goals.
As part of its
commitment to RtI, the district also created
a process for ongoing benchmark
assessments and data review.
Repuesta a Intervención
Respuesta a Intervención(Rtl) es un
propuesta de múltiples niveles para
identificar y apoyar estudiantes con
necesidades
de
aprendizaje
y
comportamiento. Este ano, CUSD 187
estableció Rtl Comité para Guía con la meta
de planear e implementar un sistema en
todo el distrito para apoyo a los
estudiantes. El Comité para Guía de Rtl fue
encargado con mejorar iniciativas de Tier 1
incluyendo alta calidad en la instrucción en
el salón, exámenes e intervenciones de
grupo durante el ano escolar 2014-2015.
Como parte de este trabajo, el Comité creo
un folleto de resumen que destaca la
propuesta del programa al apoyar todos los
estudiantes y provee guía instrucción y
ayuda al hacer evaluaciones. En Agosto, el
folleto fue revisado por todos los miembros
del personal instrucción al en un
entrenamiento diseñado para establecer un
entendimiento común de la estructura de
Rtl y su relación con las metas de avance en
el distritol. Como parte de su compromiso a
Rtl, el distrito también creo un proceso para
