New Year, New Goals
Happy 2016! We hope that you had a wonderful winter break, a happy
holidays and that the new year is off to a great start. We are so happy to
be back with our GBMS community and are very focused on getting all
of our students prepared for a successful remainder of this school year
while making sure that they are ready to move on to the next grade level.
All GBMS students and families should have received a progress card
in late December documenting their progress in the areas of: Character
GPA (CPA), GPA, Attendance and Point Percentage (completion) along
with a letter explaining their current progress towards continuation.
In addition, we started the school year working with our students to
create weekly goals with advisory teachers related to their progress.
Please review these with your child and reach out to one of us with any
questions or for any assistance in making sure your student is successful.
We are available to help our students achieve success in any way.

Our next PTO meeting with be on THURSDAY January 28th in the GBMS teacher’s lounge at 5:00 pm. All GBMS parents are
welcome to come get to know one another, discuss our next potluck and food program, and schedule upcoming events, such as:

-2nd GBMS movie night February 26th at 5:30
Both of these events are fantastic opportunities for students, parents, and staff to come together and have fun. We will need a lot
of support in making these happen and welcome any parent volunteers or feedback.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK
FAIR
ADULT ENGLISH
CLASSES

BY MS. SALDANA-SPIEGLE
Love, peace, and books! Grant will
be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair this
year. The fair will be open on Tuesday,
February 23, during the school day;
Wednesday, February 24, during the
school day and during conferences;
and Thursday, February 25, during the
school day and during conferences.
The fair will also be held online
during those days. The theme of the
fair is “Books Make Me Feel Groovy.”
Students, parents, and teachers: plan on
visiting our Feelin’ Groovy Book Fair
and buying a few awesome books and/
or gifts. Keep in mind that all purchases
benefit our school!
We have an excellent group of parents
in our Adult English Class, and we
still have some room left! In our class,
we have fun creating stories to learn
new words and there is always time
to answer questions and explain them
fully. We have learned many common
verbs in the present tense and everyone
in our class can respond to questions
in English. We will continue accepting
new parents this year. Classes are
on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from
5:00pm - 6:30pm. If you’re interested,
just come to room 211 for class or call
Ms. Nadia at 720-423-9401.
TECH
ELO UPDATE
A big thank you to everyone who
participated and attended our 2015
Holiday Showcase on a snowy cold
night. Much gratitude to the Saucy
Noodle for providing the delicious
dinner. It was a delight to see our
students performing from our Pep
Band, Tai Chi, African Drumming,
Hip Hop, Vocal Music, Improv,
Dance and PE Classes as well
as our amazing artists work on
display. Quarter 3 of Enrichments
start January 11, 2016 and will run
through March 17, 2016. We are
excited to be adding a few classes
this quarter including: Rosetta
Stone Spanish Class, Destination
Imagination Team, NASA Water
Filtration Challenge, Girls are
Coding, Robotics and PeaceJam
Student Leadership. These classes
will be part of an already robust
and expansive list of over 50 STEM,
Arts and Culture, Athletic and
Academic class choices. As always,

SPORTS
WITH MR. PAAVOLA
Basketball season is underway. Both
the boys and girls teams have been hard
at work and are looking to get their first
win after starting the season 0-3. 8th
grade leadership is strong and Ws are
within reach. The boys team is coached
by Mr. Walsh, 8th Grade Math, and the
girls are coached by Mr. Paavola, PE
Teacher.
DPS Middle School Athletics has
started a Floor Hockey league. Games
will be played from the middle of
February through the end of March.
GBMS will be fielding two teams and
our student-athletes are excited to take
part in this new opportunity. Floor
Hockey is being coached by Mr. Girard,
8th Grade Math, and Mr. Kurtz, 8th
Grade Science.
GRADE LEVEL NEWS
6TH GRADE
BY MS. D’ANIELL
Our 6th graders are really getting the
hang of middle school. They came
back from break excited and ready
to continue learning. They started
from break with new electives, new
enrichments and a revived energy. With
this, our students have begun setting
weekly goals for themselves based on
their academics and character traits.
Each Advisory teacher then checks
in with their students throughout the
week to help them stay on track for
continuation and ensure success.
6th Grade would also like to welcome
back Mrs. Cocos from maternity leave!
Mrs. Cocos is one of our wonderful
social studies teachers who works
alongside Ms. Slezak.
7TH GRADE
BY MS. RANAHOSSEINI
7th Graders are starting the new year
getting curious! For one week students
have an extra class where they can
explore interests such as floor hockey,
culinary arts, getting competitive, web
page design, upcycling by turning trash
into treasure, or a passion project! We
are excited to see what they produce at
the end of the week!
8TH GRADE
BY MR. BENEZRA
8th Graders have returned and are
taking a close look at what they need
to accomplish in order to continue
on to 9th grade. Currently 30% of 8th
graders are on track and would be
eligible for continuation as of today-Congratulations! For those who are
close to approaching, continue to
work on our four areas: GPA, CPA,
Mastery, and Attendance. 8th Grade
celebrated the following students
for their Character Traits: Anavelle,
Eyobel, Natalie, Esme, and Mark.
Congratulations to these students for
exemplary effort! 8th Grade students
set brand new goals this week --we are
looking forward to seeing a new group for
Quarter Three.

DEPORTES
CON EL SR . PAAVOLA
Temporada de baloncesto está en marcha.
Tanto los niños y niñas han sido los equipos
trabajando duro y están tratando de
conseguir su primera victoria después de
comenzar la temporada 0-3. El Liderazgo
del octavo grado es fuerte y Ws están
a su alcance. El equipo de los chicos es
entrenado por el Sr. Walsh, del 8vo Grado
de Matemáticas, y las chicas son entrenadas
por el Sr. Paavola, Maestro de educación
física.
Atletismo de las escuelas Intermedias de
DPS ha comenzado una liga de hockey de
piso. Los partidos se jugarán a partir de
mediados de febrero hasta finales de marzo.
GBMS a formado dos equipos y nuestros
estudiantes-atletas están muy contentos
de participar en esta nueva oportunidad.
Hockey sobre piso está siendo entrenado
por el Sr. Girard, 8vo Grado de Matemáticas,
y el señor Kurtz, maestro de Ciencias del
8vo. grado.
GRADO DE NOTICIAS
6TO GRADO
DE LA SRA. DANIELL
Nuestros alumnos de 6to grado han
conseguido sentir lo que es la escuela
secundaria. Volvieron de las vacaciones
emocionados y listos para continuar
aprendiendo. Empezaron del regreso
de vacaciones con nuevas asignaturas
optativas, nuevos enriquecimientos y
una energía revivida. Con esto, nuestros
estudiantes han empezado a establecer
nuevas metas semanales para ellos basadas
en función de sus académicos y rasgos de
carácter. Cada maestro Asesor se reporta
con sus alumnos durante toda la semana
para ayudarles a mantenerse en el camino
para la continuación y asegurar el éxito.
Sexto grado también quisiera dar la
bienvenida a la Sra. Cocos de regreso de
regreso de su maternidad! La señora Cocos
es uno de nuestros maravillosos maestros
de estudios sociales que trabaja junto a la
Sra Slezak.
7TO GRADO
DE LA SRA. RANAHOSSEINI
donde pueden explorar intereses, tales
como hockey sobre piso, artes culinarias,
ser competitivo, diseño de páginas
web, girando la basura en un tesoro, o
un proyecto de pasión! Estamos muy
contentos de ver lo que producen al final de
la semana!
8TO GRADO
POR EL SR. BENERZA
8º grado han regresado y están teniendo
una mirada cercana a lo que necesitan para
llevar a cabo con el fin de continuar hasta
noveno grado. Actualmente el 30% de los
estudiantes de 8vo grado están en camino
y son elegible para la continuación a partir
de hoy-- Felicidades! Para aquellos que
están cerca de acercarse, seguir trabajando
en nuestras cuatro áreas: GPA, CPA,
Maestría y Asistencia. 8vo Grado celebra
los siguientes estudiantes por sus rasgos de
carácter: Anavelle, Eyobel, Natalie, Esme,
y Mark. Felicitaciones a estos estudiantes
por el esfuerzo ejemplar! Estudiantes de
8º grado establecen nuevos objetivos de la
marca esta semana –estamos deseosos de
ver a un nuevo grupo en el tercer semestre.
7º grado están comenzando el nuevo año
con curiosidad! Durante una semana
los estudiantes tienen una clase extra

¡Amor, paz y libros! Este año Grant
estará llevando a cabo una feria del
libro Scholastic. La feria estará abierta
el martes, 23 de febrero, durante el día
escolar; el miércoles, 24 de febrero,
durante el día escolar y durante las
conferencias; y el jueves, 25 de febrero,
durante el día escolar y durante las
conferencias. La feria también estará
en el internet durante esos días. El tema
de la feria es “Los libros hacen que me
sienta a todo dar.” Estudiantes, padres y
maestros: planeen visitar nuestra feria
del libro para comprar algunos libros
y/o regalos. ¡Tengan en mente que
todas las compras benefician a nuestra
escuela!
Tenemos un grupo excelente de padres
que están aprendiendo inglés en nuestra
clase, y todavía nos queda espacio! En
nuestra clase nos divertimos mientras
creamos cuentos para aprender nuevas
palabras y siempre hay tiempo para
contestar preguntas y explicarlas bien.
Hemos aprendido muchos verbos
comunes en el tiempo presente y todas
las personas en la clase ya pueden
responder en inglés.
Seguiremos
aceptando a nuevos padres este año.
Hay clase los martes y los miércoles
de las 5:00pm - 6:30pm. Si quiere
tomar la clase, no más venga al salón

ELO UPDATE
Un gran agradecimiento a todos
los que participaron y asistieron
a nuestra 2015 Holiday Showcase
en una noche fría y muy nevada.
Y mucho agradecimiento al
restaurant “Saucy Noodle” por
proporcionar la deliciosa cena.
Fue un placer ver a nuestros
estudiantes con un desempeño

Tambores Africanos, Hip Hop,
Música Vocal, Improvisación,
Danza y Clases de Educación
Física, así como nuestros artistas

LA ESQUINA DEL DIRECTOR
Año Nuevo, Nuevas Metas
Feliz 2016! Esperamos que usted haya tenido un receso de invierno maravilloso, unas felices fiestas y que el nuevo año haya tenido un gran comienzo.
Estamos muy contentos de estar de vuelta con nuestra comunidad GBMS y
estamos muy centrados en conseguir que todos nuestros estudiantes estén
preparados para una exitoso resto de este año escolar mientras se aseguran
de que están listos para pasar al siguiente nivel de grado.
Todos los estudiantes de GBMS y las familias deben haber recibido una
tarjeta de progreso a finales de diciembre documentando su progreso en
las áreas de: GPA , de caracteres (CPA), GPA, Asistencia y punto porcentual
(finalización), junto con una carta explicando su progreso actual hacia la
continuación. Además, empezamos el año escolar trabajando con nuestros
estudiantes para crear metas semanales con profesores de asesoramiento
relacionados con su progreso. Por favor revise estos con su hijo y venga a uno
de nosotros con cualquier pregunta o para cualquier ayuda para hacer que su
hijo tenga éxito. Estamos a su disposición para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes
a lograr el éxito en cualquier camino.
