School Office: (805) 648-6836 Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service. Through Word and Eucharist, we seek the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit, embracing the love of our Creator in each thought, word, and action. As humble servants of God, we remain faithful to the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, waiting in joyful hope for our Lord’s coming. (Antífona de Entrada) Today’s readings and prayers prepare us for Lent which begins this Wednesday. The Collect reminds us that God abides in hearts that are “just and true” and we pray that “we may be fashioned by [God’s] grace to become a dwelling pleasing to [Him].” Lent is the time of year that calls us to look closely at our lives. We turn to the Old Testament reading which recounts the Lord’s conversation with Moses and Aaron concerning those afflicted with leprosy. In biblical times lepers were called “unclean” and ostracized from the community. Although leprosy is a physical disease, it becomes symbolic for us. We are inspired to examine our lives in search of any faults that keep us from allowing God to dwell within our hearts. St. Paul reminds us in the epistle “that whatever [we] do, do every thing for the glory of God.” To be able to embrace this directive, we must follow the psalmist’s lead and “turn to the Lord in times of trouble” just like the leper who “came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, ‘If you wish, you can make me clean.’” The leper believed that Jesus could heal him. His faith moved Jesus to say “I do will it. Be made clean.” We have the same opportunity. Just as the leper truthfully identified his plight, we too must be honest with God. Today’s psalm instructs that “Blessed the man to whom the Lord imputes not guilt, in whose spirit there is no guile.” We must approach God honestly, acknowledging our sins and proclaim “Be my protector, O God«. For you are my rock, my stronghold! Lead me; guide me, for the sake of your name” (Entrance Antiphon). -2- Parish Life Baptisms Please pray for the recently baptized as they begin their journey in the Body of Christ Happy Anniversary Bill & Mary Ann Carpenter 65 Years on February 18 —————————————————— In Remembrance John and Sandy Fleischauer Please pray for those who have recently passed away and for their families 24 Years on February 16 Marjorie Wagner Amelia Lubansky Mary Choy Larry & Cristina Auda 15 Years on February 12th ______________________________________ Mass Intentions To list anniversary, please email [email protected] by 5pm the Friday of the week before you wish it published.
