THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY A Word from Fr. Rocks. . . S uper Bowl 50 is almost here! 50 years of the two best football teams playing for the right to say they are the best team. As the 50th game draws near there will be much in the press concerning the best game and the best player of the game. The debates will be endless! Many have noted that we are obsessed with sports in this country. A few decades ago one theologian stated that sports was becoming the new religion. People follow their teams with passion and know so many facts about players, coaches and athletic events. This desire to know about people is not limited to just athletes. There is a certain obsession with famous people in general. We want to know about what they wear, eat and the like. Do not misunderstand me. I enjoy sports and a good biography. The point is that we have a tendency to know these contemporary people well but fail to know the saint. The saints, unlike the stars of today, can help us experience the peace and joy of being friends with Jesus. “We are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses” (Heb. 12:1), that is, the saints who behold the Most Blessed Trinity, having walked as a friend of Jesus while on this earth. Being friends with the saints leads to friendship with Jesus. Enjoy knowing about popular figures. Just don’t forget to know about the saints. I recall the response of a cloister nun who had lived in the cloister for 70 years. She was asked “So you have never heard of Elvis or the Beatles?” to which she responded “No; but I know Jesus, Mary and Joseph.” I hope we can say the same. T Collection for Catholic Schools he weekend of January 30-31 is the kickoff to Catholic School week. During all Masses, a special collection will be available which will benefit the Catholic elementary schools of the Diocese of Camden. This is the first collection of its kind and will directly underwrite the cost of providing catholic education. As Pope Francis has told us, “as Catholics we have a moral imperative to support catholic education.” This collection will thereby benefit both the schools themselves as well as families looking to make Catholic education a possibility for their children. Please consider giving generously! T Loaves & Fishes Project he pantry at Catholic Social Services needs our help. Soup, peanut butter, cereal, canned meat/tuna, pasta & rice are in great demand. We encourage everyone to help to restock the pantry. So please remember to bring your non-perishable food and place them in the Gathering Area of the church on the First Sunday of every month. Thank You for helping Us help Others! 3-636 Next Collection Day: SUNDAY, February 7, 2016 T Collection Report January 16-17, 2016 he Parish is profoundly grateful to the parishioners and visitors for their faithful and generous support. SERVING IN OUR F irst Reading: Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10 Ezra gathered the people and read to them from the book of the Law of God. He interpreted the law clearly, so that everyone understood what he had read. He then told them to go and rejoice in the Lord. S econd Reading: I Corinthians 12:12-30 Paul explains that a body is composed of many different parts, and that each part has its' own purpose and is important. He compares this to the Church, describing how we are one body composed of many members. All members should show concern for each other and understand that we are all vital to the body as a whole. G ospel: Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 Luke discusses his decision to write about the events he and the other disciples had witnessed. He begins by telling of Jesus reading a passage from the book of Isaiah, where the anointed one is portrayed. Jesus finished by telling the people that they had seen that passage fulfilled in their hearing. No me mal interpreten.
