Steve The reflection question for this week is: The magi left their familiar environments to seek and honor a new Jewish king. HOW AM I BEING DRAWN TO DISCOVER GOD IN NEW PLACES AND SITUATIONS? January 3rd, 2016 Page 2 WORSHIP The Epiphany Proclamation: Dear brothers and sisters: The glory of the Lord has shown upon us, and shall ever manifest itself among us until the day of his return. Through the rhythms and charges of time, let us call to mind and live the mysteries of salvation. The center of the whole liturgical year is the Paschal Triduum of the Lord, crucified, buried and risen, which will culminate in the solemn vigil of Easter, during the holy night that will end the dawn on the 27th of March. Every Sunday, as in a weekly Easter, holy church makes present that great and saving deed, by which Christ has forever conquered sin and death. “Only a few days ago we celebrated the Lord’s birthday. Today we are celebrating with equal solemnity, as is proper, his Epiphany, in which he began to manifest himself to the Gentiles. On the one day the Jewish shepherds saw him when he was born; on this day the magi coming from very different directions, from circumcision and uncircumcision. Thus they could be united in him who had been made our peace, and who has made both one. This was foretokened in the Jewish shepherds and the Gentile magi. From this began what was to grow and to bear fruit throughout the world. Let us therefore, with joy of the spirit hold dear these two days, the Nativity and the Manifestation of the Lord. The Jewish shepherds were led by an angel brining the news; the Gentile magi by a star showing the way.” (Augustine) The LITURGY COMMITTEE will meet on TUESDAY, JANUARY 5th, at 7:30 PM in the SACRISTY. From Easter there comes forth and are reckoned all the days we keep holy: Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten spring, the 10th of February; the Ascension of the Lord, the 5th of May, and Pentecost, the 15th of May’ the First Sunday of Advent, 27th of November. The SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK will be celebrated on SUNDAY, JANUARY 24th, at the 11:30 AM Mass. All are most welcome to this celebration of healing and forgiveness. Likewise the feasts of the holy Mother of God, of the apostles and saints, and in the commemoration of the faithful departed, the pilgrim church on earth proclaims the resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Lord. ADMINISTRATION To Christ who was, who is, and who is to come, the Lord of time and history be endless praise forever and ever! Amen! The SACRAMENT OF PENANCE is celebrated on Saturday afternoon from 4:00 PM until 4:45 PM. All are most welcome to celebrate this sacrament of healing and forgiveness. HOLY HOUR FOR PEACE: This afternoon, SUNDAY, JANUARY 3rd, there will be a Holy Hour for Peace in the World from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. All are most welcome to come together and pray quietly for peace in our troubled world. FAITH DIRECT: As a New Year gets underway please consider using FAITH DIRECT in 2016. The COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE will meet on THURSDAY, JANUARY 7th, at 7:15 PM in the PARISH OFFICE. The STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE will meet on TUESDAY, JANUARY 12th, at 7:30 PM in the SACRISTY. The PARISH OFFICE will be closed on MONDAY, JANUARY 18th, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. COMMUNITY Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. In the last few days we have celebrated a multitude of beautiful feasts: the feast of Christmas, the feast of the Holy Family, the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God, this weekend the Feast of the Epiphany and next weekend the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which brings the Christmas season to fulfillment. On January 11th we return to Ordinary Time. On the days after Christmas we celebrated the Feast of St. Stephen, the Feast of the Holy Innocents, the Feast of St. Thomas Becket, and the Feast of St. Sylvester. January 1st, 2016 also marked the 49th World Day of Peace. “Overcome indifference and win peace,” is the title of the Holy Father’s message to celebrate the World Day of Peace for 2016. If anyone would like a copy of the Pope’s message they will be available at the entranceway of the church starting this weekend. You might recall that a few weeks ago, just after I came back from my retreat in Sag Harbor I shared with you the two questions that my director for my retreat asked me: What gift will you bring to the Lord on Christmas morning? What gift will you ask the Lord to give to you on Christmas morning? I invited you to carry these questions in your heart as we moved closer to the Feast of Christmas. I encourage each of us to keep these questions within our hearts throughout this Christmas season and see what answers might be stirred up within our hearts. We are all aware of the many gifts that God has showered upon us. God has given us all that we are and all we have. Anything that we might present to God is merely an acknowledgement of who God is and who we are before God. In that spirit, the nations streaming toward Jerusalem brought gold and frankincense. These gifts were to acknowledge the Page 3 presence of the one God in Jerusalem and the desire of the nations to join Israel in offering their homage. What Isaiah envisioned, Matthew and the author of Ephesians saw as fulfilled in Jesus. The author of Ephesians understands that his mission is to make known, to promote and to foster the unity of all people in Jesus. The magi, their gifts and their homage were representative of all the Gentile world, who were and are, by God’s plan, intended to share equally in the salvific gifts of God. Given God’s plan, perhaps the best gift we might offer is our daily affirmation of God’s plan as well as our continued commitment to realizing that plan in our lives. May the blessings of our loving God fill you and your loved ones on this feast of the Epiphany! Peace, Fr. Steve ******************** A Blessing Prayer for the Home and Household on the Epiphany: Let us praise God, who fills our hearts and homes with peace. Blessed be God forever! The Word became flesh and made his dwelling place among us. It is Christ who enlightens our hearts and homes with love. May all who enter his home find Christ’s light and love. Listen now to the words of the holy Gospel according to Luke (19:1-9) Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now there was a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was, but he could not see him because of the crowd and he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. When he reached the place, he looked up and said: “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at hour house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He January 3rd, 2016 has gone to stay in the house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him: “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.” The Son of God made his home among us. With thanks and praise let us call upon him. Stay with us Lord! Lord Jesus Christ, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family: remain in our home, that we may know you as our guest and honor you as our Head. We pray: Stay with us Lord! Lord Jesus Christ, you had no place to lay your head, but in the spirit of poverty accepted the hospitality of you friends: grant that through our help the homeless may obtain proper housing. We pray: Stay with us! Lord Jesus, the three kings presented their gifts to you in praise, and adoration: grant that those living in this house may use their talents and abilities to your greater glory. We pray; Stay with us! Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only begotten Son to every nations by the guidance of a star. Bless this home and all who inhabit it. Fill them with the light of Christ, that their concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and forever. Amen! Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who develop their talents to the fullest in order to use them to benefit church and community by assisting the poor, feeding the hungry, consoling the sorrowful and teaching the young. We have been informed that our Baby Maya, who had brain surgery, is doing very well. There was some concern of the possibility that she would be unable to move the right side of her body but by some miracle all went well and she has full movement of all her limbs! A set of premature babies who we prayed for during the summer went home healthy to begin their new lives with their families. Michael Raduzzo wants to thank everyone for all the prayers said on behalf of his heart surgery. He has recovered completely and has returned to his normal life. Thank you Mike and God bless you for going to the nursing home to visit some of our sick brothers and sisters. We have some of our cancer patients in remission and several of our sick have recovered over this past year. They all felt the healing love of God through our prayers. Our Mass in October, when many of our sick and homebound were able to attend was a wonderful celebration and we felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. Two of our teenage boys recovering from bad accidents, who never met before, bonded at the Eucharistic Celebration. So many other wonderful things happened that day. CaringHands and you the parishioners, have touched so many people and yet our job is not over. There are so many sick brothers and sisters in Christ and the calls continue coming in asking for our prayers every day as our sick list seems to grow. We take one name off and add two more. Please pray for the CaringHands team that we have the strength to continue the call of this special ministry. Please don’t forget it’s your ministry too. These are our Brother and Sisters in Christ and it is our duty to continue to pray for their needs. Not everyone gets a physical healing but all get a spiritual healing and comfort receiving our cards made with love and prayers from our Parish Family. We sometimes have to be detectives to find our people so we are asking for your help. One of our parishioner’s moved from one nursing home to another, a second one was homebound and then went into a nursing home. The changes were made weeks and months ago before our cards were mailed out to the old address. We do not want them to miss out on receiving their cards. Please, if you have a family member or loved one who is on our list and they are moved elsewhere let CaringHands know at once or call the rectory office. I also urge you to put any family members who is sick on our list so we can keep in touch with them with our cards and prayers. They need us desperately. With your cooperation, we can make this Ministry for the Sick and Homebound work like a well-oiled machine. We look forward to working together in Page 5 2016 and we ask you to consider joining our wonderful CaringHands Prayer Chain. All you have to do is receive a call for an intention and pray. No meetings to attend. For more information please call Marge Walsh 516-767-2936 or e mail [email protected]. May your heart be full of joy as you remember God’s amazing love shown through His Son, Jesus! Have a Happy and Blessed New Year from CaringHands.
