The sacred family of Mary, Joseph and Jesus becomes the center and role model to all Christian families and married people. The sacred family holds all values needed in our own families and society and for that reason Christmas is a feast to break all divisions and grudges among our families and to celebrate union and communion as signs of God’s love among us. Let us pray our families may be united in celebrating Emmanuel this Christmas season (Luke 2: 41-52). An "Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion" is a Catholic layperson who assists in the distribution of Holy Communion, either during the Mass, or afterwards, to persons who are housebound or in hospitals. In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be a sufficient number of ministers of Holy Communion so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner. Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord. When the size of the congregation or the in capacity of the bishop, priest, or deacon requires it, the celebrant may be assisted by other bishops, priests, or deacons. If such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not present, "the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e., duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed for this purpose. In case of necessity, the priest may also depute suitable faithful for this single occasion (GIRM 162)." Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence. In all matters they should follow the guidance of the diocesan bishop (Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds for the Dioceses of the United States of America, NDRHC, no. 28). When recourse is had to Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, especially in the distribution of Holy Communion under both kinds, their number should not be increased beyond what is required for the orderly and reverent distribution of the Body and Blood of the Lord. In all matters such Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should follow the guidance of the diocesan bishop. All ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine. Although Joseph and Mary made the offering of the poor, Simeon recognized In them the divine wealth of universal salvation and saw them as carriers of God's presence. Saint Joseph, a model of obedience, and Mary, a model of faith, had to learn to understand their Son lost in the temple. The Holy Family of Nazareth Is a model for all Christian families. Hispanics have understood this instinctively. Many recent family movements have Hispanic roots: Christian Family Movement, Marriage Encounter, and Family Encounter. This is so because Hispanics expect the family to be e dynamic part of their social life, much as other groups expect that from clubs and social institutions. How was (Is a) the "Holy Family"? Which are Its domestic virtues? It was a family filled with faith, love, sensitivity, mutual and solicitous care, and prayer. The greatest (Jesus) obeyed the least (Joseph). There were also problems and difficulties: poverty, deprivation and suffering, which tested the faith of its members. ALL the members of the family "grew In wisdom and grace." There was peace, compassion, forgiveness, dialogue, respect, understanding, kindness, humility, meekness, and MUCH PATIENCE. There was no shouting or threatening, complaining, anger, negative silence, or mutual blaming. There was solidarity, consecration to God - Jesus - as center of their life, obedience to the Law, study of God's Word, and an effort to discover and accept his will, especially when tragedies such as the forced migration to Egypt or the loss of the child Jesus afflicted them. There was only one heart and one Spirit In them. They lived in love, compenetration, honest work, without authoritarianism or impositions. Are not our families like that? (Irony?). The bishops of Latin America spoke beautifully about the Catholic Hispanic family: 1) The Trinitarian Family of God is the model for our families: all their members must be distinct and different persons, equal and free, who know, love and respect each other; 2) the family Is the first center of evangelization and the first school of faith and love: there, one lives the fraternal vocation, communion and sharing, which later will be lived in society; 3) a "family sense" Is one of the great traits of the Hispanic family: 4) the marriage love and covenant are a symbol of the love of Christ for his Church; 5) the parents are first teachers, catechists and ministers of prayer and worship of God; 6) the treasures of the Hispanic family are the children and also the grandparents; 7) the family Is a victim of society's pressures: divorce, abortion, birth control, egotism, domestic violence, unemployment, putting things above persons; 8) the Church accompanies the family in Joys and sorrows: engagement, marriage, paternity/maternity, education, baptism, first communion, anniversaries, family feasts, sickness, and moments of crisis and sorrow. The bishops of the United States, already In 1987, approved the National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry, In which they affirm and ratify the conclusions of the Third "Encuentro" of Catholic Hispanics in the U.S.: "We, the Hispanic People, choose the family, In all Its forms, as the primary target of our pastoral effort." ·We will strive to promote family unity through the Integral education of parents and children." This Is valid for all families in the U.S.
