Note from the Director...
The weather has turned cold and there’s not much to do outside, but the library is full of activity.
The renovation project I referred to in my previous Note from the Director is well under way and is
expected to be finished in February 2016. Highlights of this renovation include updated furniture and
seating options, mobile infrastructure that simplifies connecting to the digital world for mobile device
users, and new flooring and programming space in the Youth Services department. These changes
add much needed flexibility throughout the Library for both patrons’ and staff needs.
In addition to the renovation, the Library installed new wireless routers that make connecting to the Internet faster and
more consistent with better stability. This particular upgrade was made possible through the generous support of the Library
Foundation. THANK YOU Library Foundation!
The Library continually considers ways to improve its users’ experiences based upon direct patron feedback and general
observation of patrons’ usage of the Library. The current renovation improves the Library’s ability to meet the demands of
a dynamic technological world while allowing sufficient flexibility to meet the changing needs of the District’s patrons. Within
the past year we have seen the Library’s cardholder percentage increase over six percent, indicating more District residents
are making use of the Library’s services. I want to personally invite you to visit the library and see for yourself how the
Library has changed. Discover for yourself how you can benefit from these changes. Then, tell a staff member, complete a
comment card, or contact me directly to provide your feedback. It will help inform the Library’s next steps and ultimately
inform us on how we may serve you better to make the Library the place you want to be.

Giving Young Children
the Tools to Become
Successful Readers
We are planning a
new ongoing
reading program!
Challenge yourself
to share 1000 books
with your child before
he or she reaches
kindergarten. Studies
have shown that families who start reading aloud to their
children at birth help strengthen their language skills and build
their vocabulary -- two important tools when they begin
learning to read in kindergarten.
For every 100 books you share your child will earn an exciting
incentive! See Youth Services to sign up or for more information
beginning January 11. BIRTH THROUGH PRESCHOOL
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR PROGRAMS UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED
