I discovered a routine which I think can be useful in retirement: mornings spent in physical exercise, spiritual exercise (prayer and meditation) and mental exercise: reading newspapers and novels and theology books. (I read the book on Mercy by Cardinal Kasper which Pope Francis recommended as follows: “This book has done me so much good.”) Then in the afternoon, touring or having lunch or supper with friends. With another priest co-worker, we spent a few days in Lewes, a beach town in Delaware with the lady who had been the administrative assistant in our office and her husband. Very relaxing days with beautiful weather. It was a delight to be with them and other friends I had come to know or worked with in DC. As part of my bucket list, I went to the National Shrine, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception where I had found a spiritual home in my days in DC. Next stop: South Bend, Indiana where I stayed in the guest house of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, the sisters who had served St. Matthew Parish and School for so many years. It was like finding gold to be able to get a room in South Bend on the weekend of the Notre Dame-Stanford football game. While I was there, I visited sister Marcelle, the last Holy Cross Sister to serve in St. Matthew Parish. In my first five years, she lived in Park Towers and (Continued on page 2) St. Matthew Catholic Church 2 October 26, 2014 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, (cont’d) “Esta es la continuación del articulo de la semana pasada el cual puedes encontrar en el sitio web de la parroquia.” visited homes throughout the parish. She was a very beloved sister here. From Park Towers she went to the retirement home in Ventura, CA, and later, as her health declined, she was sent to the extended care facility on the campus of the college of St. Mary of the Lake across the street from Notre Dame. Lately at age 85 she had a hip operation and is using a walker to get around. She is in a very comfortable environment and there are many sister companions with her to keep her company and many nurses and aides supporting her. I went to their chapel for Mass which they celebrate every day with about one hundred sisters. She was very happy to see me and to recall her many happy years at St. Matthew. She is still very outgoing and hospitable and always ready to serve. At breakfast she asked me about seven times if I wanted coffee. I am sure she would appreciate any letters you might send her. Her address is: Sr. Marcelle Frisee Sisters of the Holy Cross 309 Bertrand Hall, South Bend, Indiana 46556-5000. The last item on my bucket list was to go to the Notre Dame-Stanford football game at Notre Dame. The day began cold but sunny but by game time it had turned cloudy and rainy and close to freezing. I was taken by the size of the crowd and the sound of its roaring, by the huge band playing at half time and by the fact that Notre Dame won, but with the weather so foul and the rain so penetrating, I have scratched that event off my bucket list for good. Su domicilio es: Sr. Marcelle Frisee Sisters of the Holy Cross 309 Bertrand Hall, South Bend, Indiana 46556-5000. The last stop was a parish by the Wisconsin border in Old Mill Creek. The pastor and I worked in the same office in DC and have become good buddies. He was assigned to start a new parish and build a new church. He decided to relocate an old church which had been closed in Chicago and bring the interior of another church for the inside. It is a huge project, more complicated and costly than our gymnasium. He is sixty percent there. The people have moved into the church and it is very functional. So I was anxious to celebrate Mass there on a Sunday. It was quite a thrill for me, knowing how much he and the people of the parish had sacrificed to make it happen. At the Mass I remembered all the people of St. Matthew and prayer for your well-being. After that, back home, happy to be back, but happy to have walked down memory lane for a couple of weeks. Fr. Anthony E. McGuire, Pastor semanas.
