28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
WORSHIP
ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year One (2014): Individuals transformed by Encounters
with Jesus Christ
The St. Augustine “NET” (New Evangelization Team) will meet
Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 6:30pm – 9:00pm in Rm 18/19.
28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast,
but they refused to come." Why? What made the king's invitation so
distasteful to these guests? According to the parable, either the guests
were too busy with their farms and their businesses, or else they were
downright hostile to the entire idea: they "laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them." What could possibly explain this resistance?
Perhaps we have a clue in the puzzling conclusion of today's Gospel.
One of the second-string guests pulled in from the streets came to the
feast "not dressed in a wedding garment." The man knew he was guilty,
hence his silence. And the king's punishment suggests that the fellow
ought to have known better. This "wedding garment" calls to mind the
preparation of our souls necessary to join in the great "wedding feast of
the Lamb" (Rv 19:9), that is, heaven. This man was apparently just too
lazy to get ready. He presumed that having received an invitation to the
banquet was enough, that nothing was required of him. Not so. He
should have demonstrated his gratitude by dressing appropriately. And
what of the first-string guests? Some were too busy to bother coming;
others were furious that they had been invited at all. Now, where do we
fit in? Are we more concerned with worldly work than with spiritual
growth? Are we offended by the very suggestion that we might need to
"dress up" our souls? Or are we the disinterested Christian, willing to
feast but too lazy to foster his faith? Jesus gave his life to open the gates
of heaven for us. Let's show our gratitude by preparing radiant, beautiful
souls worthy of the heavenly wedding feast.
Deacon Corner: At mass we renew our relationship with God. A covenant, in this context, is a type of relationship. The type of relationship to
as we can even though our love is finite. Our response is to obey God
and receive his freely given grace to help bring the Kingdom of God
here on Earth.
When we receive the Eucharist at each Mass we are making that
promise to God that we will hold up our end of the covenant. We are
also unifying ourselves to God and to the other members of the Church
through the Body of Christ.
The whole purpose of Mass is to worship God, unite ourselves with
the sacrifice of Jesus, and to elevate our lives to the life of God. We will
only get out of this relationship with God what we put into it; God’s
grace can only work in our lives if we are open to receiving it.
Worship Corner: Liturgy of the Word. When we gather at a friend’s
home for a meal, we always begin with conversation, telling our stories.
At Mass, after the rites of gathering, we sit down and listen as readings
from the Word of God are proclaimed. They are the stories of God’s
people—they are our story.
Three readings and a psalm. On Sundays there are three readings from
the Bible. The first reading will be from the Hebrew Scriptures. We
recall the origins of our covenant. It will relate to the Gospel selection
and will give background and insight into the meaning of what Jesus
will do in the Gospel.
Then we will sing or recite a psalm—a song from God’s own inspired
hymnal, the Book of Psalms. The second reading will usually be from
one of the letters of Paul or another apostolic writing. The third reading
will be taken from one of the four Gospels.

YOUTH / YOUNG ADULTS
EDGE & LIFETEEN
This week at EDGE/LIFETEEN we began our semester on the Mass by
talking about the necessity of worship. Every person has been created in
the image and likeness of God, and God has given each person a desire
and drive to want to worship and be in relationship with God. This desire
can become distorted through sin, and we can begin to worship things
other than God. When this happens, our view on God, religion, and ourselves can become distorted. The teens learned that, as humans, we cannot reach God through human inventions of worship. God must teach us
how to properly worship God, and this was done through Jesus Christ
and the institution of the Mass. We challenged our teens to identify areas
in their life where they worshipped something other than God and to
place God in those areas. Our next EDGE/LIFETEEN session will be
held on Monday, October 27th.
Food Drive Challenge
We will have a Food Drive Challenge beginning NOW through
November 23rd. We are challenging our teens to collect enough
canned & nonperishable goods to match the combined weight of
the Deacons, Father Mike and Father Denis. If we succeed we
will have pizza. A total of 1,081 pounds are needed to outweigh our
clergy and feed our community. Donations will benefit the St. Augustine
Outreach Center. There will be a collection box in the COMMONS for
your donations. ALL ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE!!!

Colecta Anual Diocesana 2014:
