Dear Parishioners of Saint Andrew:
April has been designated “Child Abuse Prevention Month”. All of us have a serious moral duty to keep children safe from
anyone who would harm them. The Catholic Church is committed to protecting minors and vulnerable adults placed in Her
care. As I hope you know by now, all clergy, seminarians, employees of the parish, school (elementary and pre-school) and
religious education program, as well as parish/school volunteers who are in contact with minors are obliged to meet the safe
environment requirements of the Archdiocese of Miami. These include the following:

Successfully completing a national criminal background check (Renewed every 5 years).
Signing and abiding by a “Code of Conduct”.
Attending a VIRTUS training seminar and keeping current with monthly updates on how to identify the signs of child
sexual abuse.
In addition, Saint Andrew School and Religious Education Program implement the “Teaching Touching Safety” program for
children as adopted by the Archdiocese of Miami. Teaching Touching Safety is a safe environment program that speaks to
children at various grade levels in an effort to keep them safe from abuse; it also includes an educational component for parents.
The strong points of this program are that it is age-appropriate, geared to the different grade levels of children. Also, it is taught
by teachers who know the readiness level of the children in their classroom. In addition, parents are able to opt out of the
program. Nothing is taught to their children unless they approve. I recently attended one of these sessions with some of the
students in our Religious Education program and found it to be a helpful instruction for students to keep safe, understand proper
boundaries with adults, and what is and is not an appropriate secret to keep.
Let us be clear, sexual abuse is a mortal sin, a grave offense in canon law and a felony in criminal law. It is a problem in many
sectors of our society; we cannot deny it. It is never the “fault” of the one abused. All of us in the Church – from the Pope to
parents – have a serious duty to do all that we can to educate ourselves about sexual abuse and to keep children and vulnerable
adults safe. As Pastor of Saint Andrew Parish, I reiterate my commitment to abide by the Safe Environment Policies of the
Archdiocese of Miami and to promote a loving, safe and joyful environment here for all, especially for our children. To learn

“Protecting God’s Children” link or call Jan Rayburn, Safe Environment Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Miami, at 305-7621250.
Very often those who experience sexual abuse – as a child or as an adult – face serious emotional and spiritual struggles to
overcome the trauma. Should you wish to speak confidentially to one of the priests, please call the parish office for an appointment (there is no need to tell receptionist the purpose of your meeting). The priest will provide you with spiritual assistance
and, if helpful, suggest a professional counselor who abides by Catholic teachings. To report child sexual abuse, notify the Department of Children and Families Abuse Hotline at: 1-800-96-ABUSE (1-800-962-2873). To communicate concerns of incidents of sexual misconduct involving a cleric, employee or volunteer of the Catholic Church, contact Deacon Richard Turcotte,
Ph.D., Victim Assistance Coordinator at 1-866-80-ABUSE (1-866-802-2873).
Keeping children safe is not just something we do in April; it is a year-round commitment in fidelity to the Lord who said “Let
the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19, 14).

Seamos claros, el abuso sexual es un pecado mortal, un delito grave en el derecho canónico y un delito en el derecho penal. Se trata de un
problema en muchos sectores de nuestra sociedad; no podemos negarlo. Nunca es “culpa” del abusado. Todos nosotros en la Iglesia desde el Papa hasta los padres - tenemos el deber de hacer todo lo posible para educarnos sobre el abuso sexual y para mantener a los niños

ABCD 2015 CAMPAIGN
Archbishop’s Charities & Development Drive
Parish Goal : $ 250,275.00
We still remain short of our goal for the 2015 Archbishop's
Charity and Development Campaign (ABCD). As you know, our
goal is $250,275. To date, $213,421.16 has been contributed
or pledged from our parish. Therefore, there still remains
$36,853.84 to reach our goal. Contributions to the ABCD are
used for the education of seminarians (including
Deacon Julio De Jesus who has served our parish
this year and his five classmates who will soon be
ordained to the priesthood), to assist parishes and
school in poor neighborhoods, to provide charitable
services to the poor and immigrants, etc. If you have
not yet made your donation to the 2015 ABCD, please join me
and your fellow parishioners who have done so. You may

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Archdiocese of Miami runs one of the most robust awareness and prevention
programs in the country. For more information contact the Safe Environment Office at 305-762-1250.
Dating violence, defined as physical assault or acts of bodily harm, including psychological and emotional abuse, verbal or implied, that take
place in private or in social situations in teens is significant in scope with 85% of boys and 88% of girls revealed that they had been the victim of
this type of aggression at least once in their current dating relationship. Psychological aggression often leads to physical aggression. Dating violence may be pronounced during adolescence due to the newness of romantic relationships for boys and girls and they may not be able to constructively cope with frustration, jealousy or other negative emotions. Many of these situations are also linked to cyberbullying where teens can
exploit technology to cause harm to a romantic partner including abuse of monitoring or stalking through electronic devices access and even
blackmailing or extortion with stored content.
Electronic dating violence is a growing problem that requires more conversation and discussion with youth about what healthy dating looks like
and what dysfunctional dating looks like.

Gospel reading Luke 24:35-48 [To be read aloud]
The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. While they were still
speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were
seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I
myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and
his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked
fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And
he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of
sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”
Brief commentary:
The Easter season calls us to recall and reground ourselves in the origins of the Christian faith and church. For this reason the first
readings are taken from the book of the Acts of the Apostles, the only New Testament book that explicitly offers memories of the
early years, triumphs and struggles, of the Christian communities being founded by the spirited apostles of Jesus Christ. The author of
Acts – also the author of ‘Luke’ – speaks to us through speeches like those of Peter, with the Christian conviction that the crucifixion
of Jesus was not the result of random chance, but both the consequence of Jesus’ life and message, but especially of God’s plan of
salvation. In today’s speech Peter consoles his listeners who were confronted by their complicity in the crucifixion; and he does so
comforting because ‘they and their leaders’ had “acted out of ignorance.” How much suffering by the Jewish people would have been
avoided had Christians throughout the centuries paid attention to these words! For the Jewish people are no more collectively guilty of
Jesus’ death as Americans are collectively guilty of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. And as the Catechism of the
Catholic Church well states, “all sinners are somehow” connected to his death. The earliest Christian professions attributed the ultimate reason and mystery of Jesus’ passion to the inscrutable divine plan, and as central “for the forgiveness of sins” and the redemption of the world: the common New Testament expression (in varying forms), “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise
from the dead…” attests to this (Luke 24:48). Today’s second reading from the first letter of John calls on all to be honest about sinfulness, which so thoroughly infects our lives, relationships, and corrupts our world; and thus it also tells us about our need of divine
expiation, repentance, and new life lived in the light of God’s will. Today’s gospel reading follows the appearance of Jesus to the disciples of Emmaus, who, after their encounter with the risen Christ on the road and recognizing him “in the breaking of bread,” returned
to Jerusalem testifying to the first community about what they had experienced. There and then the risen Jesus stood in their midst.
Their reaction is described with highly emotionally charged words: startled, terrified, troubled, incredulous for joy, amazed. It is an
experience that is both ‘terrifying and fascinating’ (Rudolf Otto’s, The Idea of the Holy). Jesus responds to each of their needs: he
gives them his peace, he assures them of the reality of the resurrected glorious body, invites them to come near and touch him, reminds them of the divine plan about his death and rising foretold in the scriptures. Jesus finally commissions them to be his witnesses
to the world. We too have been visited by the risen Christ and have touched him. His resurrection was a breakthrough for him and for
us, and we have experienced him not as a ghostly figure, but as the absolutely alive and absolutely powerful One, our “Advocate” (1
John 2:2) who comes to our encounter, and who calls us to recognize him and touch him particularly in our neighbor in need. We too
are “witnesses to these things.” We too are anointed to witness with our lives and our words to the saving life-giving power of the
crucified and risen Jesus Christ, our Lord, to a world in need of living grace that overcomes the corrosiveness of sin and death. Today
our Christian sisters and brothers in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Nigeria, and many other places, are sustained and strengthened by the risen
One; let us also – as his Body – come to their rescue in whatever ways we can this Easter and always!
Today’s reading offers significant messages:
• Every Easter season Christians everywhere are renewed in our identity and mission, by recalling the beginnings of the Church, founded by the
life, passion, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
• The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is not a chance-event, but the centerpiece of God’s plan of salvation for all humanity. Christians are
told throughout the New Testament that the salvation of all sinners is the reason for which Jesus Christ willingly offered himself.
• Christians have been touched by the risen Christ and have touched him. Most especially we are to recognize the risen Christ and touch his
wounds in neighbor who is in need.

After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings.
• Do I search the Scriptures to encounter the Word of God and be transformed by it?
• How have I experienced the presence and touch of the risen Lord in my life?
• How am I a witness to others of the resurrection of Jesus Christ? Do I recognize the presence of the crucified and risen Lord in my neighbor?

Lectura del santo Evangelio según San Lucas 24:35-48
En aquel tiempo, contaban los discípulos lo que les había pasado por el camino y cómo habían reconocido a Jesús al partir el pan. Estaban hablando de estas cosas, cuando se presenta Jesús en medio de ellos y les dice: “Paz a vosotros.” Llenos de miedo por la sorpresa, creían ver un fantasma. Él les dijo: “¿Por qué os alarmáis?, ¿por qué surgen dudas en vuestro interior? Mirad mis manos y mis
pies: soy yo en persona. Palpadme y daos cuenta de que un fantasma no tiene carne y huesos, como veis que yo tengo.” Dicho esto, les
mostró las manos y los pies. Y como no acababan de creer por la alegría, y seguían atónitos, les dijo: “¿Tenéis ahí algo que comer?”
Ellos le ofrecieron un trozo de pez asado. Él lo tomó y comió delante de ellos. Y les dijo: “Esto es lo que os decía mientras estaba con
vosotros: que todo lo escrito en la ley de Moisés y en los profetas y salmos acerca de mí tenía que cumplirse.” Entonces les abrió el
entendimiento para comprender las Escrituras. Y añadió: “Así estaba escrito: el Mesías padecerá, resucitará de entre los muertos al
tercer día, y en su nombre se predicará la conversión y el perdón de los pecados a todos los pueblos, comenzando por Jerusalén.
Vosotros sois testigos de esto.”
Comentario breve:
El tiempo de Pascua nos llama a recordar y regresar – fundarnos – en los orígenes de la fe e Iglesia cristiana. Por esta razón las primeras lecturas son tomadas el libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, el único libro del Nuevo Testamento que ofrece recuerdos explícitamente de los primeros años, los triunfos y desafíos, de las comunidades cristianas fundadas por los apóstoles animados de Jesucristo.
El autor de los Hechos – también el autor de ‘Lucas’ – nos habla a través de discursos como el de Pedro, con la convicción cristiana
de que la crucifixion de Jesús no fue el resultado de chance y fortuito, sino de la consecuencia de la vida y mensaje de Jesús, pero especialmente del plan divino de salvación. En el discurso de hoy Pedro consuela a su audiencia quien fueran confrontados por su complicidad en la crucifixión; y lo hace confortándolos porque ‘ellos y sus lideres’ habían “actuado con ignorancia.” ¡Cuánto sufrimiento del
pueblo judío se hubiese evitado si los cristianos a lo largo de los siglos hubiesen atendido a estas palabras! El pueblo judío no es mas
colectivamente culpable de la muerte de Jesús que los Estado Unidenses son colectivamente culpables del asesinato del presidente
Abraham Lincoln. Y como nos dice aptamente el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, “todos los pecadores están de alguna manera”
conectados con la muerte de Jesús. Las profesiones de los primeros cristianos atribuyeron la razón y misterio de la pasión de Jesús al
plan inescrutable divino, y como central “para el perdón de los pecados” y la redención del mundo: la expresión común (en varias formas), “Esta escrito que el Cristo sufriría y resucitaba de entre los muertos…” atestigua a esto (Lucas 24:48). La segunda lectura de la
primera carta de Juan nos llama a todos a ser honestos sobre nuestro pecado, que tan profundamente infecta nuestras vidas, relaciones,
y corrompe nuestro mundo; y así nos comunica sobre nuestra necesidad de expiación divina, arrepentimiento, y nueva vida a la luz de
la voluntad divina. El evangelio de hoy es la continuación del relato de la apariencia de Jesús a los discípulos de Emaús, quienes,
después de haberse encontrados con el Cristo resucitado en el camino y reconociéndolo en “la fracción del pan,” regresaron a Jerusalén testificando a la primera comunidad sobre lo que habían experimentados. Allí y entonces Jesús resucitado se presento en medio
de ellos. Sus reacciones se describen con palabras emocionalmente cargadas: atemorizados, sorprendidos (asombrados), alarmados,
incrédulos con alegría, atónitos. Es una experiencia que es ambas ‘aterrorizante y fascinante’ (referir a La Idea de lo Sagrado por Rudolf Otto). Jesús responde a cada una de sus necesidades: les otorga su paz, les asegura de la realidad de su cuerpo resucitado glorioso,
les invita a acercársele y tocarle, les recuerda del plan divino sobre su muerte y resurrección previstas en las escrituras. Jesús finalmente
los envía como sus testigos al mundo. También a nosotros nos ha visitado el Cristo resucitado y lo hemos tocado. Su resurrección fue
el gran logro para el y para nosotros, y lo hemos encontrado no como un fantasma, sino como el vivo absoluto y poderoso absoluto,
nuestro “Abogado Defensor” (1 Juan 2:2) quien viene a nuestro encuentro, y nos llama a reconocerlo y tocarlo particularmente en
nuestro prójimo necesitado. Somos también “testigos de estas cosas.” También somos ungidos para dar testimonio con nuestras vidas
y palabras sobre el poder vivificador del crucificado y resucitado Jesucristo, nuestro Señor, a un mundo en gran necesidad de la gracia
salvadora que supera la corrupción del pecado y la muerte. Hoy nuestras hermanas y hermanos cristianos en Irak, Siria, Libia, Nigeria,
y muchos otros lugares, están sostenidos y fortalecidos por el Resucitado; ¡También nosotros – como su Cuerpo –
debemos ir a sus rescate de cualquier manera posible esta Pascua y siempre!
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
• Cada Pascua los cristianos en todo lugar renuevan su identidad y misión, recordando los comienzos de la Iglesia, fundada por la vida,
pasión, y resurrección del Señor Jesús.
• La muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo no es un evento de casualidad, sino es el centro del plan divino para la salvación del mundo. El
Nuevo Testamento le anuncia a los cristianos de que la salvación de los pecadores fue la razón por la cual Jesucristo se ofreció
voluntariamente.
• Los cristianos han sido tocados por el Cristo resucitado y lo han tocado. Especialmente hemos de reconocerlo y tocarle sus llagas en
nuestro prójimo necesitado.

Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o sentimientos.
• ¿Busco las Escrituras para encontrar la Palabra de Dios y ser transformada por ella?

Repentance & Forgiveness
Today’s readings all speak about “repentance and the
forgiveness of sins.” We bask in the joy of Easter knowing that we have been forgiven. It is good to remember
that God’s gift of forgiveness requires us to be merciful
and forgiving towards others.
Jesus taught us to pray, “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”
This week, think about people who have offended you
and choose to forgiven them. If the pain of their offense
is too great, pray for the grace to forgive. Then pray
daily for God to bless that person abundantly. Your
prayers have the power to heal you, and prevent you
becoming hateful.
The world needs our prayers too. Let us pray for those
who persecute the innocent, pray for the grace to sow
love instead of hatred, and pray that God will touch the
hearts of all who go about the world doing violence and
evil.

SAVORING THE EXPERIENCE
One of the wonderful things about vacations is the time we
spend two or three weeks afterward savoring the experience,
sharing vacation photos and memories with our family and
friends. This kind of reflection puts us back in touch with the
original experience and reminds us of the relaxation and wonder
the vacation afforded us. Today, on the Third Sunday of Easter,
the Church blesses us with reminders of what we celebrated two
Sundays ago. All three readings are reflections on the meaning
of the death and resurrection of Christ. One of the threads running through these reflections is that the purpose of the Lord’s
suffering, death, and resurrection was to save us, to forgive our
sins. We are given fifty days to ponder this reality—fifty days to
savor the experience of Christ’s dying and rising for us.

SABOREA LA EXPERIENCIA
Una de las cosas maravillosas sobre las vacaciones es que
después de nuestro regreso nos pasamos dos o tres semanas
saboreando la experiencia, compartiendo las fotos y recuerdos
con nuestra familia y amistades. Esta clase de reflexión nos
vincula nuevamente a la experiencia original y nos hacer volver
a vivir el descanso y las maravillas que la vacación nos proporcionó. Hoy, el Tercer Domingo de Pascua, la Iglesia nos da la
bendición de unos recordatorios de lo que celebramos hace dos
domingos. Las tres lecturas son reflexiones del significado de la
muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Uno de los hilos que unen a
estas reflexiones es que el propósito del sufrimiento, la muerte y
la resurrección del Señor fue para salvarnos y perdonar nuestros pecados. Tenemos cincuenta días para contemplar esta
realidad –cincuenta días para saborear la experiencia de la
muerte y resurrección de Cristo por nosotros.

Why use Envelopes?
The regular use of Sunday envelopes is so important!!!
Whenever we do not have a record of contributions or when
contributions have ceases, we have no way of knowing
whether someone is still joining our community of worship or
not. Unless we know someone is a practicing Catholic, delays
and hard feelings can result when people want to be married,
when they want their child baptized, or when they want to be a
godparent or a sponsor. We go through this with people every
day. It is the Church, not just this parish, which insists that
signs of good faith commitment be present on these occasions.
It is simple to establish and maintain a record of attendance
at Mass and parish support—simply by using the envelopes
that parish
provides. This is also necessary in order to
enroll your child in our religious education or sacramental
preparation programs, and to obtain a favorable tuition rate at a
Catholic school. You must be able to demonstrate that you are
a practicing Catholic—that you are participating at Mass and
contributing to the support of the Church. Filling out a registration form alone does not
accomplish this, USING ENVELOPES ON SUNDAY DOES OR FAITH DIRECT. It also enables us to thank you and provide you with a record of your
contributions for tax purposes.

¿Por qué hay que usar los Sobres? Special accounts and collections
¡El uso regular de los sobres dominicales es muy importante!
Cuando no tenemos un registro de contribución o cuando las
contribuciones paran, no tenemos manera de saber si usted está
aún asistiendo a la parroquia o no. A menos que nosotros sepamos que la persona es católica practicante, esto atrasa y ocasiona resentimientos cuando las personas quieren casarse, bautizar
a un niño/a, o quieren ser padrinos. Nosotros tenemos estás
situaciones todos los días. Es la Iglesia, no sólo esta parroquia,
la cual insiste en que señales de compromiso de FE sean presentes en estás ocasiones. Es sencillo establecer y mantener un
registro de asistencia a Misa y de apoyo a la Parroquia, simplemente usando los sobres que la Parroquia les da. Esto es necesario también, para inscribir a su hijo en los programas de educación religiosa o en los programas de preparación para algún
sacramento, y para obtener un mejor precio en la matrícula de su
hijo en una Escuela Católica. Usted debe demostrar que es
Católico practicante, que usted participa de las Misas y contribuye apoyando a la Iglesia. Llenar un registro no es suficiente. HAY
QUE USAR LOS SOBRES LOS DOMINGOS O USAR FAITH
DIRECT. Esto también nos permite agradecerles y proveerles un
registro de sus contribuciones para sus impuestos.
