ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year One (2014): Individuals transformed by Encounters
with Jesus Christ
30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."
The law of love. That's what Jesus came to establish. In a religious milieu that was often marked by legalism and scrupulosity, Jesus brought a
kind of freedom. He reminded us that the laws of religion are made to
serve the ultimate goal of love: love for God and love for neighbor.
Think about the Ten Commandments. This classical summary of God's
rules for us can be divided into two types of laws. First come the laws
about loving God: have no strange gods; don't take the Lord's name in
vain; honor the Sabbath. Then come the laws about loving our neighbor:
honor your parents; don't kill; don't commit adultery; don't steal; be
honest; and don't covet your neighbor's spouse or property. When we
follow the law of love that Jesus preaches today, all of this is taken care
of.
If we loved God with our whole heart, mind, and soul, for example,
there would be no room left for false gods. There would be no bitterness
or apathy leading us to disrespect God's name or to fail to worship him
as he has asked. Similarly, if we loved our neighbors as ourselves by
following the Golden Rule, then we would naturally respect them instead of lying, killing, coveting, or the like.
Ultimately, all the dos and don'ts of the law are just specific guidelines
describing what love looks like. This is very helpful for those times
when love doesn't come so easily to us. When we struggle with having
our heart in the right place, the Ten Commandments give us direction.
But as Jesus instructs us today, the goal is to grow in the kind of love
that naturally leads us to want to do what's best.

Deacon Corner: Our salvation is not a one-time ordeal where make a
promise to God at one point in our lives. Life is a process and so is our
salvation.
When we receive the Eucharist we are receiving Jesus, God. In doing
so we are making that commitment each time to live out our end of the
bargain. By God’s gift of free will to us we always have the opportunity
to choose to fall away from God through sin and we need his grace and
strength to maintain our relationship with him.
By receiving the Eucharist at least once a week and making that
promise to love God and obey him we are receiving the grace necessary
to do God’s will. We grow in faith each time we receive.
An analogous example is marriage. The ideal marital relationship is
modeled after God’s relationship with his people. The two parties in
marriage give themselves mutually exclusively to each other and promise to make self-sacrifices to support the other person.
Likewise we make whole our relationship with God through the Eucharist by eating his flesh and drinking his blood. We are renewing that
covenant. We do it over and over and over again to renew ourselves and
grow our relationship with God.
Most ordinary people honestly cannot say that if they are married
they will only celebrate with their spouse once a year, on their anniversary. Likewise we continually renew our covenant with God through
the Mass weekly, not once or twice a year.
Worship Corner: Standing for the Gospel. Because of the unique presence of Christ in the proclamation of the Gospel, it has long been the
custom to stand in attentive reverence to hear these words. We believe
that Christ “is present in his word, since it is he himself who speaks
when the holy Scriptures are read in the church” (Constitution on the
Sacred Liturgy, #7).
The priest or deacon will again greet us with “The Lord be with
you.” He then introduces the Gospel reading while marking a small
cross on his forehead, lips and heart with his thumb while praying silently that God cleans his mind and his heart so that his lips may worthily
proclaim the Gospel. In many places, the congregation performs this
ritual action along with the priest.
The Gospel reading concludes with the ritual formula “The Gospel of
proclaiming our faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Word. Then
we sit for the homily.

After-L.I.F.E. (Living In Faith Everyday)
L.I.F.E. participants were treated to a lively and “moving” presentation
entitled “Becoming Catholic Today”. People of God….look for pictures
of the Seekers, Catechumens, Elect and Neophytes in the niche in the
back of the church. Welcome, invite, pray for and write to encourage
these dear ones along their journey. And what else could you do??????
EveryWoman is an evening reading/study group for women of all ages
exploring ways and words of wisdom. We are doing a DVD series
called: "The Human Spirit and the Times We Live In" Led by Fr. Richard Rohr and Sr. Joan Chittister. Call Eileen Brown at Ext. 1113 for more

WINGS’ (Women In God’s Spirit)— This is a weekly ministry for the

EDGE & LIFETEEN
This week at EDGE/LIFETEEN we began our semester on the Mass by
talking about the necessity of worship. Every person has been created in
the image and likeness of God, and God has given each person a desire
and drive to want to worship and be in relationship with God. This desire
can become distorted through sin, and we can begin to worship things
other than God. When this happens, our view on God, religion, and ourselves can become distorted. The teens learned that, as humans, we cannot reach God through human inventions of worship. God must teach us
how to properly worship God, and this was done through Jesus Christ
and the institution of the Mass. We challenged our teens to identify areas
in their life where they worshipped something other than God and to
place God in those areas. Our next EDGE/LIFETEEN session will be
held on Monday, October 27th.

Food Drive Challenge—The Youth will have a Food Drive
Challenge beginning NOW through November 23rd. We are
challenging our teens to collect enough canned & nonperishable
goods to match the combined weight of the Deacons, Father
Mike and Father Denis. If we succeed we will have pizza. A
total of 1,081 pounds are needed to outweigh our clergy and feed
our community. Donations will benefit the St. Augustine Outreach Center.

Catholic Women’s Conference: “Women on the Way” - Sat., Nov. 8,
2014 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center—The Center for Marriage, Family, and Life is hosting a diocesan-wide Catholic Women’s Conference. This is a one-day conference for all women over 18 to come together for a day of fellowship, prayer, and learning. We welcome national keynote speaker Sister Miriam James, SOLT and guest musician Sarah Hart.
The conference will feature multiple breakout sessions, Mass, Reconciliation, moving testimonies, and expo area with several different vendors and

Rosary Oct. 11th even in the rain!
Bishop Ireton Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary Annual Yard and
Bake Sale: Saturday, November 8, 2014, starting at 8:00 am, 3300 Old
Courthouse Road (directly across Courthouse Road from Rockwood
Park). We have "treasures from our attics" plus many delicious baked
goods. All monies received from this fundraising effort will be donated to
charity. Thank you.
Congratulations to Phillip George Staten, who was welcomed into Full
Communion in the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the 5:30 mass on October 4th. Also congratulations
to Kathleen Argal Babaran, who was confirmed and welcomed to the
table for the first time and to Maureen (Mo) Davis-Berk and Roy Justin
Piaoan who celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation.

you chose an auto-debit off your checking account or credit card, you

There are Appeal envelopes and Commitment Cards in the Information Center. It is important for all of our parishioners to complete a
pledge. They may be returned to the parish office or placed in the

El tercer domingo de cada mes tendremos una deliciosa venta de
comida, preparada por los diferentes ministerios de la parroquia. el
calendario es el siguiente:

Estos so los Requisitos:
1. Ser miembros inscritos de la parroquia (no menos de

3. Debe estar participando en el programa de Educación
Religiosa.

Colecta Anual Diocesana 2014:
Nuestra Fe esta Viva en el Amor

La Colecta Anual Diocesana esta a punto de comenzar. Para aquellas
personas que no han recibido su carta o no han tenido tiempo para
responder, les queremos comunicar que durante las misas del 11 al 12 y
del 18 al 19 de octubre realizaremos la Colecta de sus donativos para esta
colecta. Es muy importante que todos nosotros contribuyamos con nuestra
donacion en la Colecta 2014.
Dar de comer al hambriento, apoyar a nuestro clero, evangelizar a las
personas en la diócesis, enseñar y pasar la fe de las ricas tradiciones católicas a nuestros hijos, son los componentes del gran trabajo que tenemos
que llevar adelante para alcanzar la misión de la iglesia Católica. Todos
estos ministerios son componentes vitales en la Colecta Anual. La Colecta
Anual Diocesana 2014 apoyará diecinueve ministerios, incluyendo nuevos fondos tales como el Museo Histórico Católico de Virginia, el fondos
de los Apalaches y el Ministerio Asiático.
Además, todas las parroquias recibirán una porción de los fondos recaudados, para ser usados en sus prioridades locales. Esta año, los fondos que se
devolverán a nuestra parroquia serán usados para apoyar la presencia de
nuestro segundo sacerdote de tiempo completo, el Padre Denis Jacinto
Masin, y su inestimable labor con nuestros feligreses hispanos.
Los invitamos para que nos visiten en el nuevo local que se encuentra en
el nuevo edificio y compren Biblias, libros, rosarios, estatuas, música
cristiana y muchos artículos religiosos. Gracias por su colaboración.
Si usted desea podrá hacer su donación en 10 cuotas mensuales, lo cual

REFLEXIONES
30o Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
El domingo pasado Jesús fue puesto a prueba respecto al dinero
de los impuestos. Hoy, nos dice la palabra de Dios que mucha
gente le escuchaba y se asombraba de sus enseñanzas. Sin embargo, una vez más los fariseos se reunieron para hacerle la
siguiente pregunta: "Maestro, ¿cuál es el mandamiento más
grande de la ley?" La respuesta de Jesús no se hizo esperar:
"Amarás al señor, tu Dios, con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma
y con toda tu mente". Único y gran mandamiento, pero hay otro
muy parecido. "Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo". Todos
sabemos que la ley y los profetas tienen su base en estos dos
mandamientos. Y ¿ahora cuál es la ley, cuál el mandamiento?
El Papa Francisco, en la audiencia general del 12 de junio de
2013, nos lo clarifica para nuestros tiempos "la ley del amor".
"¿Cuál es la ley del pueblo de Dios? Es la ley del amor, amor a
Dios y amor al prójimo según el mandamiento nuevo que nos
dejó el Señor (cf. Jn 13, 34). Un amor, sin embargo, que no es
estéril sentimentalismo o algo vago, sino que es reconocer a Dios
como único Señor de la vida y, al mismo tiempo, acoger al otro
como verdadero hermano, superando divisiones, rivalidades,
incomprensiones, egoísmos; las dos cosas van juntas. ¡Cuánto
camino debemos recorrer aún para vivir en concreto esta nueva
ley!" ¿Con que batallamos más, amando a Dios o amando al
vecino? ¿Qué es lo que Dios nos llama a hacer?

grupos diferentes se reúnan aquí y a venerar. Por lo tanto, la
