Today I will celebrate Mass in Lourdes, France. Lourdes is the place where the
sick are received and are treated as very special people. They are given many
privileges. Many come to Lourdes to be healed physically. For some this does
not happen; rather, they are cured spiritually of mind and soul. They learn the
importance of suffering and how suffering can lead us to a closer union with God.
Mary, our mother, shows us the way to her son. “Avoid the melodrama and
self-pity over minor problems in life,” Pope Francis said in a homily last month.
“Instead, use life's inevitable difficulties to pray for strength and pray for those
who are suffering real tragedy. Our life is too easy, our complaints are
melodramatic complaints compared to the many people suffering from
debilitating disease, hunger and persecution. When people experience hardship,
they may be plagued by doubt; even Jesus on the cross asked God, ‘Why have
you forsaken me?’” The pope said that when people talk to him about their
difficult or painful situation he encourages them to keep asking God, "Why?"
“Because this, too, is a prayer…Real prayer involves being absolutely honest
before God about one's thoughts and feelings. Real prayer comes from the heart,
out of the moments one is living." People turn to prayer "… in times of darkness,
when there is no hope in life, when you can't see the light at the end of the
tunnel....” The great miracle of Lourdes today helps people who have prayed
from the depths of their heart to come out of the darkness of their infirmities and
see the light of God’s presence in their lives.
On the other hand the pope warns us that some people are “not sick, not hungry,
without pressing needs; when there's a little darkness in the soul we think we’re
martyrs and we stop praying. Someone might say, ‘I'm angry with God. I'm not
going to Mass anymore!’ But why? For such a little thing.” And he continued,
"Prepare your heart" for the inevitable moments of darkness, and “Pray as the
church prays, pray with the church for so many brothers and sisters who suffer in
exile from themselves, who are in darkness and suffering, without any hope at
hand.” Lourdes is a place of hope. Being faithful to participation in the
Eucharist, the great prayer of the Church, gives all, when praying from the depths
of their hearts, a place of hope, a place of light in the darkness of their souls.
A word of appreciation goes out to members of the Parish who participated in
St. Vincent de Paul’s first “Walk for Poor.” This was a good lesson for our young
people to help the poor. Hopefully, they now appreciate the many gifts God has
given them and not to take them for granted. Thanks also to the Bingo volunteers
who are faithful in helping the Parish; Bingo just celebrated its 4th birthday.
I am praying at the Grotto of Lourdes for the Parish; be assured that your petitions
have been placed in the Grotto.
Yours in Christ,
Father John

Powerful
Study on the
Blessed
Mother
Begins Soon
Filmed on
location in the
Holy Land,
Mary: A Biblical Walk with the
Blessed Mother will place you in
the midst of the powerful drama
of Mary’s earthly life, taking you
through her joys and her
sorrows. You will learn how she
works in our lives today, drawing
us ever closer to her divine Son.
Seeing Mary in this way will
change you forever. She will
become a part of your daily life
and help you to become more
like Christ.
Join us for Mary: A Biblical Walk
with the Blessed Mother in Saint
Joachim Hall every Wednesday
for 8 weeks, beginning October
29 at 7 PM.
Next week’s second collecƟon
supports Catholic World Missions.
By BapƟsm, all Catholics are called
to parƟcipate in the mission of the
Church and share their faith as
missionaries. World Mission Sunday gathers support for the pastoral and
evangelizing programs and needs of more than 1,150 mission dioceses in Africa, Asia,
the Pacific Islands, and remote regions of LaƟn America. The funds gathered on
World Mission Sunday are distributed in the pope’s name by the Society for the
PropagaƟon of the Faith—a PonƟfical Mission Society.
This valuable ministry has
provided over 175 Prayer
Shawls to the sick and countless
Rosaries and scapulars to the
parish.
With high demand for prayer
shawls, the ministry could use
your help making prayer shawls
and prayer shawl bags. The
group meets on most Thursday
mornings at 9:00 a.m. in FFC 5.

privilegios.
‘¿Por qué me has abandonado?’”
Padre John
