A Welcome from the Principal
Welcome to the new school year at John F. Pattie, Sr. Elementary School! Whether you are a new or returning Pattie family, I
want to welcome you and say we are off to a great start for the
2014-2015 school year! We have already held two events
before the school year has even started: our 1 st – 5th grade
Meet & Greet and our Kindergarten Orientation! We had a
wonderful turnout at both events with students and families
visiting new teachers, and returning students visiting their former teachers! PTCO had their BOO HOO Breakfast for Kindergarten parents the first day of school, some parents with tears
of joy and some with tears of happiness!
We are pleased to welcome our newest staff members to our
Pattie family: Joe Burton (School Counselor), Rusty Canny
(Special Ed teacher), Amy Cofer (3rd grade teacher), Jackie
Comer (2nd grade teacher), Jennifer Glover (4th grade teacher), Madelyn Metzger (2nd grade teacher), Krista Rhodenhizer (Library Media Assistant), and Emily Richwine (4th grade
teacher). Welcome everyone to Pattie Elementary!!
As we begin our new school year, we will continue to support
the mission of Pattie Elementary: The mission of John F.
Pattie Sr. Elementary School is to provide a safe and nurturing environment with high expectations where every
child can be successful academically, socially, and physically. Through a partnership of family, staff, and community we enable our students to become contributing members of a changing global society and to continue our tradition of community service. With your help and support at
home, we will continue to teach and model respect, responsibility, generosity, compassion, trust, integrity, and cooperation.
Student motivation, parent support, and staff dedication are all
equal components for academic success at Pattie Elementary.
We appreciate all that you do at home to help support your
child’s success at school!
We will continue our Positive Behavior Intervention Support
program emphasizing positive behavior in a more proactive
manner! The mission of our program is PATTIE: Personally
Achieving Teamwork Trust Integrity & Effort. Our mission will
be achieved through teaching mini-lessons and modeling our
vision of the PURR-fect Panther: Polite, United, Respectful
and Responsible. With your support we will continue to work
towards reducing referrals to the office, while increasing instructional time in the classroom! We have reviewed and revised our PURR-fect Panther program to better meet the
needs of all our students.
Please continue to look to official PWCS communications if an
emergency situation should arise in the county. I would like to
encourage all parents/guardians and staff members to register
your mobile devices for PWCS E-News or text feeds. You can
currently follow PWCS on Twitter or go to their Facebook page,
and soon you will be able to access individual PWCS school
APPS. More information will be sent home to you, once it has
been received! Please only pass on official PWCS communication, as even well-intended rumors can create unnecessary concern and complication. Classroom teachers at Pattie Elementary
will also be creating a parent email group to notify you of classroom events, as well as possible early release from school if inclement weather should unexpectedly arise. The last couple of
years we have had inclement weather in September or October,
so please share your contact information with your child’s classroom teacher early in the year!! Thank you for your attention to the
safety of all students at Pattie!!
Our Pattie Elementary website is currently up and running! Grade
level and classroom websites will be updated weekly. Please take
time to visit our website at http://pattiees.schools.pwcs.edu/ for
updates on grade level and specialist information, school announcements, and important calendar events. We are working to
update the website in a timely manner so it can be used as an
information source and an educational link for our students and
families. Please check out our Pattie Parent Handbook to help
answer your Questions from A-Z. A copy will be sent home with
the youngest in each family and a copy has been posted under
Parent Resources on our website.
If you are a returning Pattie family, I know that you have noticed
the three trees to the right of the main doors that have been removed. Two of the trees were completely diseased and the third
was infected. With the advice of the PWCS Grounds Supervisor,
we had them removed with the hope of replacing them in October
with additional flowering shrubs and bushes. Please share any
ideas that you may have for beautifying the entrance to Big Pattie!
Again, thank you for your personal commitment to your child’s
success and I look forward to working closely with you this year.
With your help and cooperation, this will be an excellent school
year!
Sincerely,
Margie Otterblad
Sinceramente,
Margie Otterblad

dropping off over-the-counter medication. A doctor’s signature will be required for prescription medication. Students are expected to be responsible to remember to

transport medication.
Students may bring cough drops, lotion, sunscreen, and

Volunteer Information Session
Pattie Elementary is extremely fortunate to have highly
trained and qualified volunteers who work with students
and assist with a variety of school activities. To make
this time rewarding for our students, staff, and parents,
volunteers are required to go through an information
session. If you are interested in volunteering and have
not attended any of the volunteer information sessions
offered in the past, or if you have not signed the Volunteer Guidelines form, please try to attend one of the two
volunteer information sessions we are offering this year.
The first session will be on Monday, September 23rd
at 9:30 am at Big Pattie. The date of the second session
will be announced later in September. Each session will
last approximately 20-30 minutes.
If you attended this training in the past and signed the
Volunteer Guidelines form at the conclusion of the session, you do not need to
do it again.
We appreciate your support! Please contact Ms.
Turner if you have any
questions 703-670-3173.

~ Guidance ~
Hello Panthers and Families,
We are very excited to begin the 2014-15 school year here at
Pattie. As your Professional School Counselors, we are excited
to have another wonderful opportunity to work with parents and
students to promote great learning and success for this school
year. Enhancing good behavior and character traits through
school wide activities and lessons will be an area of focus this
year.
Please visit the School Counseling Page located on the Pattie
website for updates on guidance activities during each month. In
addition, we have a link to the Helping Students Learn Newsletter, which provides helpful information about school success.
Each month, we will be focusing on a specific character trait. In
September, we will be talking about being POLITE. Polite is the
first trait for our PURR-fect Panther. Students will learn about the
importance of manners and how they help create a positive environment at school.
Communication is essential for the development and success of
your children and we encourage and welcome it. Please feel free
to contact us anytime.

Right to Special Programs/Services
The Prince William County Public Schools Division is required to inform the community of a student’s right to a free,
appropriate public education and the availability of programs
and services, including a special education.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
(IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section
504) are federal laws that give the School Division certain
responsibilities with respect to providing such educational
programs to students with disabilities. Under the IDEA and
Section 504, the School Division has the responsibility to
actively and continuously identify, locate, and evaluate those
children, infant to age 21, living in Prince William County
who may be in need of special education and/or related services, or adaptations or accommodations to regular education services.
These laws also require the School Division to:
• Refer for possible evaluation any student of school age
living in the School Division who a school staff member suspects may be disabled.
• Provide appropriate educational and school‐related opportunities to students with disabilities in an inclusive setting to
the maximum extent appropriate.
• Provide notice of the availability of services and types and
location of services to nearby private schools, pediatricians,
and the Health Department.
• Provide parents/guardians of students with disabilities with
notice of their rights annually, and prior to their student’s
evaluation and placement, or any significant change in their
student’s placement.
• Develop and implement procedural safeguards with respect to actions regarding the identification, evaluation, and
placement of students with disabilities.
• Provide written notice of the School Division’s procedural
safeguards to parents or guardians.
If you suspect that your student may have a disability affecting your student’s development or academic performance,
or may have a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits a major life activity, please contact the Director of
Special Education at 703.791.7287 for further information.
El Derecho a los Programas Especiales/
Servicios
educación especial y/o servicios relacionados, o adaptaciones
estudiante, o pueda tener alguna discapacidad mental o física
Transportation
Those students who live in designated walking
areas should follow these rules:
1. Walk directly to and from school. Do not wander off planned route.
2. Always use sidewalks where available. If none
available, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
3. Never play or run suddenly into the street.
4. Never stop and talk to strangers or accept rides
from those you do not know (report this to an
adult).
5. Cross the street at a corner unless a crossing
is supervised by a crossing guard or staff member.
6. Cooperate with crossing guards, safety patrols
and staff members on duty. Obey their instructions.
Students arriving by car in the morning should use
the Kiss and Ride lane on the side of Big Pattie. All
students who are car riders MUST be signed out
in the office. Students at Big Pattie will no longer
be released to walk out to the car unaccompanied.
We are not able to alter a student’s regular mode
of transportation unless we have instructions
from the adult responsible for the student.
Therefore, if there is a change in your child’s routine,
we need specific directions in writing. Only in an
emergency will a phone call be accepted. Please
call before 2 p.m. as dismissal can be a chaotic process with many phone calls and announcements.
Bus transportation to PWC
Schools is a privilege.
The right to ride a bus is conditioned
on good behavior and the observance of the rules and regulations. Students who violate any rule
will be reported and will run the risk
of having their bus privileges suspended.
1. Arrive at designated bus stop no more than 5
minutes before pick-up time.
2. Assemble in an orderly manner at the pick-up
point, remain out of the road until the bus
comes to a complete stop. Parents please supervise your children at the bus stop.
3. Enter the bus in an orderly fashion, go directly
to a seat, sit down and face forward.
4. Remain seated until the bus stops.
5. Students are not permitted to carry glass articles
or eat on the bus. Students are also prohibited
from carrying large objects on the bus.
6. Loud talking, profanity, scuffling, throwing objects, standing, and changing seats are examples
of misconduct that draw the attention of the driver
from the task of safely operating the bus.
At Big Pattie, no motor vehicles are allowed
to enter the bus circle between the hours of
7:45-8:30 a.m., 2:30-3:15 p.m. or anytime buses are present. REMEMBER, IT IS ILLEGAL
TO PASS A SCHOOL BUS WHEN THE RED
LIGHTS ARE FLASHING. Thank you for your
assistance with this safety procedure!
Emergency Card / Code of Behavior
Please complete all of the information on the
emergency card and return it to your teacher as
soon as possible. We would like all emergency
cards to be turned in no later than September 5th.
Should there be changes as the year progresses (i.e.
phone numbers or baby sitter), please send that information in a letter to the school office so that your
child’s card will be up to date. It is important that this
card be accurate so that we are able to contact you
immediately in case of an emergency involving your
child.
The Code of Behavior contains information regarding the responsibilities of the school, parents and students. It also contains the rules and regulations for
student conduct, which emphasize the seriousness of
offenses involving weapons and harassment. The
bus regulations have been included in the Code of
Behavior and will not be coming as a separate item.
Should you have questions please give the office a
call.
Please read the Code of Behavior and sign the
statement on the back of the emergency card. This
indicates that you understand the rules contained in
the Code of Behavior as well as those in the student
handbook. A link to the Code of Behavior can be
found on the Pattie webpage.
~ Library News ~
It is an exciting time in the Pattie
libraries. We are very pleased to
announce that Mrs. Krista
Rhodenhizer is the Library Assistant in the Little Pattie library. As
our PALS tutor, she sponsored a
building-wide reading incentive at
Little Pattie and is a valuable addition to the Pattie staff. With the
Encore rotation change, guidance
and library will share a block so all
students will have regular access
to the library.
Reading is an important life skill
that we need to encourage with our
boys and girls. The library experience is such an important part of
children’s education; parents also
play an essential role in this learning process. All ages love to be
read to. Unfortunately, this precious time has often
been eliminated because of families’ busy lives. You
would be amazed at the good children’s literature that is
available. There isn’t anything better than to see a child
excited about a book and being able to read it.
Parents can make reading and the library a rewarding
time by helping your children to:
· Find a special, safe place at home for library books
· Take care of books, teaching responsibility
· Return books on time
Reading can be a rewarding activity for everyone. Working together, we can help the children to grow and to
develop a key to success in school.

Check Acceptance
Policy
We welcome your checks, but unfortunately we have received a
number of returned checks this
school year and it is becoming a
problem.
Due to this continuing concern, if your check
is returned for insufficient funds, we will be
using a service called Transmodus to electronically present it to your bank for the face value
plus a $35 processing fee and any protest or
bad check return fee charged by your financial
institution. Transmodus is used by all Prince
William County Schools. This action will be
taken without further notice.
All returned checks referred for collection are
subject to a $35 processing fee, any protest or
bad check return fee charged by your financial
institution, and all other charges, interest, and
attorney's fees allowed by law.
Strings Class for 5th Grade
All 5th grade students at Pattie
have the opportunity to learn
an instrument in Strings class!
This week, I met with your child
to discuss the Strings program
and sent home a permission
form to join Strings. Permission forms are due on Wednesday, September 10. Students
can choose to play the violin,
viola, or cello. Your child will
need an instrument, which can
be rented from various music
stores in the area. Pattie Elementary also has a limited
number of instruments to rent directly from the
school, which are distributed based on need. No
student is turned away from the Strings program
due to financial reasons. If you have any questions
about the Strings program, please feel free to email
me at [email protected]. I am looking forward to
an exciting year making music in Strings class at
Pattie Elementary!

Welcome Back To Physical Education!
It’s such an exciting time for the PE department as
we prepare for a fun and active school year in Physical Education class. I would like to start by recognizing our 4th and 5th grade students from last year who
did an awesome job on their individual physical fitness test. These students helped bring our school
average above and beyond all county and state
benchmarks in each of the 4 areas assessed. At the
elementary level we assess all 4th and 5th graders in
aerobic endurance, upper body strength, abdominal
strength, and flexibility. This year we are really looking forward to continuing to grow and reaching high
levels of personal physical fitness at all levels, Kindergarten through 5th grade. Every year in physical education class, we try our best to provide students with
exposure to a variety of activities, with the intention
of creating as many positive experiences associated
with physical activities as possible. A major focus this
year in physical education class will be to reach and
maintain high levels of physical fitness and to continue to develop our teamwork/sportsmanship skills. To
begin the 2014-15 school year, we will be participating in many icebreaker and cooperative activities
as a way to help build relationships amongst students
and classes. These relationships will be very important as they will have a significant impact on student success in physical education class as well as
within their classrooms.
All students will have two 45 minute physical education classes a week. Students will be expected to
come to class prepared with appropriate shoes and
clothes in order to participate safely. After about the
first week of school, weather permitting, we will be
having class outside as much as possible. I recommend students bring a water bottle with them to
each class, although this will be optional. Parents, if
you have any questions about what we are doing in
class, or would like to know more about how your
child is doing in Physical Education, please do not
hesitate to email me at [email protected]. Thank
you so much for your support!
Sincerely,
Mr. Halse
Mrs. Sutherland
I am very excited, once again,
to have the opportunity to work
with your children in art. This
year we will continue to learn
about the elements of art and
principles of design as well as practice our "art
making" skills. We will also study artists, artifacts
and architecture, categories of art, and aesthetics.
We're having fun in art here at Pattie!

Student Insurance
Student accident insurance is becoming more and more
important to families due to lack of other insurance for
their children, or having major medical plans with everincreasing deductibles and co-insurance requirements.
Student accident insurance will be available July 1 for
parents to enroll their students for the 2014–15 school
year. Markel (PWCS student accident insurance provider) has an electronic enrollment process through the
Markel Web site http://markel.sevencorners.com/ or by
calling 877.444.5014.
This Web site allows parents to:
• View all of the coverage and premium options;
• Review a “Frequently Asked Questions” section; and
• Purchase the insurance using a credit/debit card and
receive an instant and printable confirmation of what
they purchased.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
El seguro para accidentes de estudiantes
El seguro para accidentes de estudiantes está siendo
más y más importante para las familias debido a la falta
de otros seguros para niños, o tener planes médicos
mayores con deducibles cada vez más altos y requisitos
de coaseguros. Los seguros de accidentes para estudiantes estarán disponibles el 1ro de julio para que los
padres inscriban a sus estudiantes para el año escolar
Pennies for Pattie
John F Pattie Sr. Elementary has a
long heritage of community involvement. We would like for that trend to
continue. The Pennies for Pattie
drive is a long-standing tradition at our
school. We collect money in all forms,
but our drive focuses primarily on collecting change. The money collected benefits students in
need at a school in a less fortunate area of Virginia. This
project reminds all of us that giving and sharing is one of
the most important things we can do as caring citizens.
The Pennies for Pattie drive will begin around the end of
October and continue until Winter Break. Start saving your
pennies now and we thank all of our amazing Pattie families for your support!
