“I want you”
Father Mark Wagner
Some people don't
understand Catholics and
don't understand Christ.
When they hear about
Lent and about carrying
the Cross, they think it
means that God wants us
to be miserable. For them, the words "All
are Called" mean that God wants
everyone to forsake all happiness and join
an army of what they consider “miserable”
monks and nuns. They think God is like
those vintage WWII posters of Uncle Sam
pointing and saying "I want you." They do
not understand Jesus' words in today's
Gospel: "Whoever loves his life will lose it,
and whoever hates his life will save it."
God is a good Father who invites us to
find our true happiness. He invites us to
share in His FAMILY life. He invites us to
share in His DIVINE life.
That is the meaning of God's words in
our first reading today about the "New
Covenant." God says that plan is to "put
His law within us, into our hearts" so that "I
"Whoever
loves his life
will lose it,
and whoever
hates his life
will save it."
will be your God and you will be my
people."
At the Last Supper Jesus
invited all of us to take and drink "the
Blood of the new covenant" which is a
sharing in His life.
(Cf. Jer. 31:31-34).

Reflections on Sacrifice from the USCCB
Taken from “Six ways to evangelize during Lent” found on usccb.org
External Sacrifice vs. Internal Conversion:
I don't get it --All you do is give up candy?
External Sacrifice:
So why exactly are you
not eating candy for the
next month?
T
his is a very popular penance
during Lent, and the questions
about it are just as popular.
Heaven forbid you should avoid
the cake at the birthday party! You
LOVE cake! But it’s Lent – a time for
penance and sacrifice. Christ has said, “If
anyone wishes to come after me, he must
deny himself and take up his cross daily
and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Giving up
something we enjoy strengthens our love
for Christ and our resilience against
temptation.
As Pope Benedict XVI said in his
Lenten address of 2009, “Through fasting
and praying, we allow [Christ] to come
and satisfy the deepest hunger that we
experience in the depths of our being: the
hunger and thirst for God.” It unites us
with Christ’s own sacrifices and gives us a
deeper appreciation of the blessings in
our lives.
“Giving up something
we enjoy strengthens
our love for Christ
and our resilience
against temptation”
Now, here is an interesting question.
External sacrifices are the most obvious
kind, so sometimes it does look like all we
do is avoid chocolate. However, if you look
closer, you'll realize that fasting and
abstinence have always gone hand in
hand with two of their best friends: prayer
and almsgiving. External sacrifice is a
manifestation of interior conversion: "…
interior conversion urges expression in
visible signs, gestures and works of
penance" (CCC no. 1430). Interior
conversion is where prayer and
almsgiving come into play.
In almsgiving, we show mercy and
generosity to others, giving them a chance
to experience the blessings we have. In
prayer, we are communicating with God,
asking Him to bless and perfect our fasting
and almsgiving: "… prayer is the living
relationship of the children of God with
their Father who is good beyond measure,
with His Son Jesus Christ and with the
Holy Spirit" (CCC no. 2565). It's not just
avoiding sweets. It's glorifying God by
growing in His Love.

The prayer of
grandparents is a great
grace for families and
for the Church
Dear Brothers and Sisters: In our
catechesis on the family, we now
reflect on the role of grandparents.
The Gospel offers us the image of
Simeon and Anna as two older
persons who hope in the Lord’s
promises and then, when perhaps
least expected, see them at last
fulfilled. Simeon and Anna are models
of a spirituality for the elderly.
They point to the centrality of
prayer; indeed, the prayer of
grandparents is a great grace for
families and for the Church. In prayer,
they thank the Lord for his blessings,
otherwise so often unacknowledged;
intercede for the hopes and needs of
the young; and lift up to God the
memory and sacrifices of past
generations.
The purifying power of faith and
prayer also helps us to find the wisest
way to teach the young that the true
meaning of life is found in selfsacrificing love and concern for
others. Young people listen to their
grandparents! I still treasure the
words my grandmother wrote to me
on the day of my ordination. In a
society which overlooks and even
discards the elderly, may the Church
acknowledge their contribution and
gifts, and help them to foster a fruitful
dialogue between the generations!

New to the Parish? Wondering where to start??
Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things
through Him who gives me strength."
This scripture could not be more
perfect to describe Kyle De Jesus.
Kyle is a strong, humble servant of the
Lord and would go to great lengths for
his faith. At 22 years old, he is working
through the masters program at CSU
Stanislaus in the Business
Administration Field. He would one
day like to be a Director for the
County or a college professor. Kyle is
also a part of our high school CORE
where he leads a small group of teens
closer to Christ and teaches them how
to truly live out their faith in their
daily lives.
Kyle says his favorite part of being
on CORE is, "I get to become closer to
God; helping others do the same is like
an extra bonus." He is also an usher at
the 5:30 youth Mass and is training to
be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy
Communion. We are so blessed to
have Kyle's amazing example of what
a young Catholic man should be,
ministering to our parish youth.
We are so thankful for his gifts,
talents and strength in the Lord. He
helps challenge the teens and his
peers to drive deeper in their faith and
prayer, especially in Eucharistic
Adoration.
Thank you, Kyle for your bold love
for the Lord and your constant care for
those around you!!!!

Santo Padre
DEL LAPTOP DEL PÁRROCO, Padre Mark

Papa Francisco
La plegaria de los
mayores es un gran don
para la Iglesia
Queridos hermanos y hermanas: La
catequesis de hoy está centrada en la
importancia que los abuelos tienen en
la familia y en la sociedad.
Ciertamente, se trata de una etapa
especial de la vida y, hasta cierto
punto, novedosa, también para la
espiritualidad cristiana. Pero el Señor
nos llama a seguirlo en todos los
momentos y circunstancias.

Padre Mark Wagner
Algunos no entienden a los católicos
y no entienden a Cristo.
y monjas miserables. Ellos piensan que
Dios es como aquellos afiches antiguos
de la Segunda Guerra Mundial del Tío
Sam que señala y dice, “¡Te quiero!” No
encontrar nuestra felicidad verdadera. Él
nos invita a compartir en Su vida
FAMILIAR. Nos invita a compartir en Su
vida DIVINA.

Algunos
acuden a Felipe y le dicen: “quisiéramos
ver a Jesús, quisiéramos conocerlo”.
muere.
TODOS SOMOS LLAMADOS DURANTE ESTA CUARESMA A PEDIR
CON HUMILDAD QUE NUESTRO
CORAZON SEA TRANSFORMADO.

describir a Kyle De Jesús.
